I don't write many reviews, so apologies ahead of time if this ends up a rambling mess. I just felt somewhat compelled to, seeing this games Recent Reviews average as low as it is. It seems like a rare circumstance where me and my single review could matter a lot, so here I am. For full transparency and context, I am not far in the game despite 8 hours of play time. I am still in Chapter 4, and I have spent much of this time exploring, finishing quests, familiarising myself with the mechanics and enjoying the combat for the sake of it. I cannot really speak on what level, encounter or boss design look like after this point, or even attest to what the second character brings to the table or changes. If anyone reading this expects a review of greatly specific informative detail, you can stop now before I disappoint you. We're going all vibes here. Before much else, I think it's worth mentioning allegations of the "unrated" content being paywalled or Patreon-only. They are entirely untrue. I have no idea how this came about, let alone became pretty common; I had no problem following a couple of simple links to download a patcher that is hosted officially and for free. The top rated review on this store page is half-constructed on something entirely untrue. The unrated content patch is both free and safe. The only content relating to when and wear the game was purchased, is Early Access players receiving the bunny suit cosmetic outfit. I have also installed the patch from day one of 1.0, and run many different forms of malware scan and diagnostic tools for other reasons since. Nothing to do with this game has been flagged at any point, nor have I had a single account access attempt made since. Hey, four paragraphs in and I can now start talking about the actual game. Not bad! So here's the elephant in the room that I think really matters to a lot of people leaving reviews for this game; the price. This was, as far as small team projects go, already an expensive game in Early Access. Now in 1.0 and beyond, it's an even more expensive game at $40. In the Steam ecosystem where it's common to see AAA games discounted by half or more to reach a similar price, usually even cheaper, that gives Mahou Arms a frankly unwinnable comparison point. It's not surprising that a lot of people will ask themselves, or even each other, why they would buy this game in a world where something like Nier: Automata is probably always two weeks away from costing less, and has the benefit of being made by a team closer to 200 people than Mahou Arms'... possibly 2 core staff? I just don't think there's a satisfying answer for anyone asking that. This game is not offering the "value" they find from a AAA game reduced in a sale. But, I also don't think it realistically could if it tried. I can't really tell anyone what that cost for this game was or wasn't worth to them. It just makes me feel bad that the situation exists. Mahou Arms is shooting for the moon, while nothing about the industry or the type of game it wants to be is in its favour for trying. Complex 3D action needs a lot of assets and finds itself a lot of pitfalls, there's a reason it was a realm of only professional studios for so long. It doesn't fear putting itself out there as a (potentially) R18 game, but contrary to the "sex sells" mantra, that's not how most video games find things to go when it's putting a hard limit on where and how people can see the game to begin with. It even puts a lot of value on its presentation, something that could have only resulted in more time sunk in and more budget to find for those bringing in talent from outside. And regardless, for myself, I do think video games are art and it's something I believe enough to put my money where my mouth is. If this price is what it costs to open the door to more ambitious games from smaller teams with their own unique ideas, especially ones most publishers won't even touch, then I guess I'm just not complaining about it. I think Dollars To Hours is the kind of math you do for buying wireless earbuds or a space heater, and I wouldn't fly to the Louvre and see the Mona Lisa just to say I should have gotten a longer flight for the price. I'm just not holding that price against this game. People who would will just have to call me a shill or whatever. Hey, four seven paragraphs in and I can now start talking about the actual game. Not bad! When do we get to the meat of review? Sorry, maybe that was it. I might have less to say about my experience so far than I do the circumstance of it, and not for any lack of trying, I guess that just happens when you want to write art reviews and not consumer guides. Put plainly, I've just... liked all my time with this game so far. I started the game with little idea of what to expect, so I was only pleasantly surprised by how pretty the design of the game looks. It looks slick, considered and coordinated, and actually starting the game surprised me further with realising the character we play would be fully voiced, and very charmingly so too. I don't think it was long before I decided Amelia is one of my favourite characters to listen to in an English dubbed video game. Between this, a nice design, and the unusual choice to give the lead character a Really Big Axe instead of something more typical, which is a choice I'm especially keen on, Amelia is a character I just think is very appealing and memorable. Beyond these first impressions, what about playing the game itself? Well, as someone who was there for action games on the sixth and seventh generation of consoles, it fits like a glove for me. It also feels snappy and consistent, important priorities that even big budget action games seem to neglect more recently. Unlike many older action games though, I rarely find myself having to fight the camera! Managing targets and locking on has been a breeze, I think I've only had a few seconds at most total where I got stuffed somewhere that made it hard to see what I was doing, but a few seconds of several hours is much better than many other games have managed. The gun controls are especially nice, giving plenty of freedom and speed to effectively use them as the utility add that they are. Amelia's primary weapon is, fitting for its size, satisfying to use. It has a move set that feels exciting and looks cool, though if I had to criticise it, somewhat unfocused; enough moves cover enough use cases to make only a few stand out as specific tools. It's not a dealbreaker, but having to think more about how I navigate combos wouldn't be unwelcome. Similarly, I feel unsure as to how I'm meant to use the magic to augment my experience, but maybe that is something that will change as I progress or experiment. As far as I progressed, I do have think complaints about enemy health, or even worse the first boss, are mystifying me. I have no idea if this game attracted so many people who had no expectation to play before seeing the porn, or if everyone just sucks at video games now. Calling it a skill issue is too soft. Enemies don't really take any meaningful amount of time to kill on the standard difficulty as long as you show some curiosity about using jumps or guns to cancel attacks, and make some vague effort to group them well. The first boss dies in two passable combos, which she will serve you for free with a stun if you just wait for a projectile then dodge counter it. I'm not saying it can't maybe jump you a couple of times while you get to grips with it, but getting walled by the tutorial because you refused to push different buttons and see what they did is deeply embarrassing, and personally I would not self-report like that in reviews or discussions. More I could say. Running out of characters. ♥♥♥♥. TL;DR: Good game. Tries hard. Understands assignment. Executes well. I'd pay $40 for much less.

The game itself has potential. However, at the current price, I honestly can't recommend it. It feels unfinished, lack of content, and more like an early-access project that somehow decided it was ready to charge full price. I'd recommend waiting for a significant update or a big sale. At the current price, there are plenty of better games you can spend your money on.

Completed twice now. I like it. If you apply the patch, the adult content is great. As a spectacle fighter it's a bit rough. Has good music by Dale North, which I hadn't heard of before. Those tunes have a JRPG vibe. The VAs are good but the writing isn't very thrilling.

Bought this game years ago because it has a lot potential for an indie game. It didn't disappoint me at all; reminds me like I'm playing a PlayStation 1&2 games. Pros: Gameplay feels great! - Combat and movement feels natural. A lot of effort was made into making the combat feel like an AAA game. - Art, animation and music works well with the gameplay and story. The comic segments is a good insert for cutscene for the game. Cons: The world feels empty from time to time. - The first section of the game feels like it has good placement of enemies but latter it feel like they only limited the placement due to the story. Despite being massive some area feels like you can do platforming and explore but only feel disappointed to find little to no items at all. - Side quests story aren't very interesting; they only are the means to gain exp. For the Devs: - A post-apocalyptic story of magical girls saving the world does feel great in a way. However it feels like a lot of context left out until the 80% of the game's progress. Stories like these are what makes it interesting; finding out what happens to the world before and after. - Dream sequences needs voices to feels more immersive. - Spell feels bland like it can be improve in animation and visual. - The length of the game feels somewhat neutral for a hack and slash game. However if it's going expand for future updates. I would like to see some more ways to further improve the gameplay of the game. Some section of the game's gameplay feels like a one time segment which feels unnecessary to put in. - The hacking shooter game in early part of the game feels like it can be expanded as side quests. - Gun play and drones controls should be involved more in side quests or mini games. - The 18+ scenes are a treat but would like to see more of the events to get to them. Not just enter a random spot and get into it.

Really fun and good looking game to hack and slash enemies. A controller is highly recommended to really have the console experience to dodge, attack en use your skills. If you liked Nier Automata then perhaps this game will interest you, give it a chance and play few hours, I recommend this game!
