I left because it was too pay to win. I took a long break. I got bored on a long journey and reinstalled remembering the early fun I had before it got so predatory. If anything its worse.

Marvel Snap is a conceptually incredible game wrapped in one of the worst game designs I have ever experienced. The idea of the game is great. The combination of a card game with elements of Backgammon, simultaneous turns and multi-lane strategy is a breath of fresh air in a card game market that is dominated by established, but ultimately somewhat stale game design. It is a great concept. The collection of different artworks for your cards offers a great variety of customisation and self-expression and could have been an amazing avenue to add monetisation to the game. Unfortunately the card-acquisition system and the choices that result from it are enough to ruin the game on their own and make me vehemently tell new players to avoid the game. You have seen someone play a cool deck or have your favourite cards you want to play with? Unless you are willing to spend literal thousands of dollars or play extensively for years to build your collection level you will almost certainly not be able to play that deck. The idea behind the card acquisition is akin to pre-release Magic the Gathering. Cards were limited and rare and everybody built decks with the cards they owned. To help facilitate this, Marvel Snap matches you (roughly) based on collection level. Players with a large collection are matched against each other, so even as a beginner you can climb the ladder among your peers. In theory this could be really fun, but in practice it invites ideas for game design that actively drag the game down. Designing a game where nobody has a complete collection and people are forced to build around the cards they own only works if cards are created equally. But with the monetisation tied into card acquisition, that would hurt the cash flow. As a result, cards are not created equally. Like the strong new card this month? Buy the battle pass. Want to build a deck you saw your favourite content creator play? Unless you have consistently played since release and never took a break or are willing to fork over frankly ungodly amounts of cash you will play with whatever collection of cards the game is willing to give you. Better hope you got the good ones. The result is that there is no space for new players. Every once in a while an event comes around that shows off the strength of the game without requiring you to have an extensive collection, but as the events close, the players leave again. You are punished for taking a break and you are rewarded for spending money. As players burn out and few new ones are willing to commit to a few years of grinding to even remotely catch up the player base dwindles. And as the player base dwindles and the cash flow slows down, Second Dinner is forced by their own approach to game design to make the monetisation more cut-throat, bundles in the store more expensive and the game less approachable. I don't know if it is already too late for the game, or if the design philosophy for card collection is reversible. Steam charts shows a game that has consistently lost players since release. Draft mode brought a surge of players coming for a game mode that doesn't require a full collection, but ultimately the event will end or will have to be monetised more harshly to pay for the sins of the monetisation philosophy. If the acquisition system for art variants and actual cards switched places, I could see the game recover, but that would need an admission of fault I don't think the Developers are capable of. I hope in a few years I will feel silly for doubting the potential of the game, but with no significant changes to the approach of the card collection I will instead be watching a eulogy to Marvel Snap.

A WORD OF CAUTION: this game seems to lean heavily into wanting it's players to spend A LOT of actual money in-game. LOTS and LOTS of microtransactions and it's definitely geared towards a PAY to WIN type of person. But... you CAN play and have fun in this game without spending a dime. It really is quite enjoyable if you like card-battler type games or are any type of card collector at heart. Specifically, if you enjoy superheroes and superhero games then you should enjoy this. I'm a new player and have already reached out to the support team with a few in-game issues. While those issues weren't fixed immediately, I do think they genuinely tried to fix my issues as quick as possible. The problems that I had were eventually fixed (within a few days). AGAIN A WORD OF CAUTION: be careful of microtransactions unless you have cash to throw into this game. With that all being said, I recommend this game because of the fun I am having with it and the fact that the support team did a good job helping me with my issues.

Greediest and most micro-transaction pushy/heavy digital card game I've played this far. Card acquisition has been made deliberately impossible: you cannot get a specific card you want no matter what guaranteed without spending the amount of resources that equals to the total amount of possible cards in the game, or waiting for several moths patiently, logging in every 8 hours. The game is filled with pop-up ads to push you buy something, and too many currencies that you need to constantly exchange for ephemeral rewards. Also the UI is cluttered and buggy, the game modes are all locked in their own resource ecosystems so that no player can every accumulate any resources more than the devs allow or the time they are willing to spend, as every reward unlocks on a timer independent of your gameplay skill or win ratios. Worst thing about the UI is the lack of options (basically none) and hotkeys (none). After all this development time, there is not even a hotkey to undo your turn, for someone playing with a controller, having to click something opening another sub-menu and then click another thing and then to confirm just shows how this game truly came mobile-first and pc-never. I hadn't bothered to put a review before, but came back now to check the draft: as expected, it is very uninnovative cardpool smashing in a game that is not designed for: A. duplicates in deck, B. random buffs that alter the power, cost and effects of cards. Basically every game is completely luck-based, as you cannot know what your opponent could play as there is no set pool, or limits of any kind. And again, rewards are limited. The worst part is that they could not (in apparently 2 years of dev time) manage to create draft that actually uses their SNAP-mechanic (which is basically the most innovative thing of the entire game). About the RNG and gameplay: Most of the cards have randomness effects similar to Valve's failed Artifact and the like (random move, random damage, random buff, spawn random card), and while the game uses the similar 3 lane system (which I LOVE) the randomness is often a bit much, especially when many times locations do either nothing, or completely stop your deck from winning. This also leads to many decks just ignoring the locations and changing them to their own ones. But yeah, the WORST part of the game is the card acquisition, before having a break for few years now, about 100 hours in, I waited in the shop to buy Kang, the Conqueror for 6000 tokens, which was basically all I had accumulated in the grindy system. Now when I come back I find out it has been completely trashed: instead of the unique effect, its cost has been changed and it has a completely random and useless effect, yet no compensation has been given to anyone. And this has been a pattern, tens of other cards, especially meta-defining (which Kang was not) have been reworked completely, making them bland, boring, and useless. Also new cards release overpowered to get people to buy them, then nerfed shortly afterwards. In a nutshell: Game where getting a specific card is next to IMPOSSIBLE, that said card can change at ANY TIME for ANY REASON, and for NO COMPENSATION. P.S: according to their conversion price, just buying one RANDOM tier 5 card out of 170+ or so costs almost 100€, so guaranteeing to get the one you want costs roughly 17000€.. It doesn't matter what deals they would throw for their resources, when paying would not net the player the thing they want guaranteed.

TL:DR came back to the game after years, lose to unstoppable combos that if they have it, they just beat what I can do. Some cards are just... too easy to circumvent the downside, and others are everywhere & hard to even see what's happening. If you want to see how the other half lives, play this game. If you can afford to be the richer half, this applies to you too. Review. I love this game. Marvel characters, flashy effects, big numbers, some cool combos that take a whole game to set up. Its awesome. I came back to it after years for draft, and it was amazing. When I got bored of draft I could play my old decks and still win. Then they took away draft, Thanos frontier came out, and then it became a "well, I better play around some random colour mechanic that even if you think you see a colour you're wrong" storm. I was about to give up, bought a random booster, somehow lucked into the exact card i wanted. Got the god draw game 1(Ok, it was 2), because game 1 my opponent won by playing 5 cards (no. really.) over 7 turns . I was going ok. Game 2 I get the god draw, oh look, he had the exact card he needed to hard counter me. The streaks happen, sure. but watching cubes leak away, with no alternative game modes? nah man. Its a trap. it feels bad, and it took 3 days of no draft to remind me why I quit. 7300 collectors level. Might come back in a few years again. Don't regret the money I spent, but even with enough colector tokens (one of 4 currencies) to buy whatever I want, its still bad feels.

This is like Hearthstone except you have even less agency and somehow significantly greedier. The games are fast at least.

"This is by far the best card game you can play on the go. It's fast and engaging, but it has one big problem: the DEVELOPER. They continuously make season pass cards overpowered and then nerf them to the ground. Yes, sometimes season pass cards are bad, but I think this is evidence that they know what they are doing. By occasionally releasing weak cards, they can keep getting away with creating 'must-have' cards that force people to buy them. They need to stop doing this."
