Minoria

Momodora.

Несмотря на это, Minoria в чем-то схожа с моими прошлыми проектами (например Momodora и Reverie Under the Moonlight).

This is the only review I have written for a game, but I felt compelled to do so after completing this one and seeing a lot of the other reviews and discussions. I love the Momodora series, but there is just something different and special about Minoria. The combat and gameplay is familiar but yet has its own flavor to it. You start feeling like you are made of glass, but by the end once you get upgrades and get used to the mechanics you feel like a cannon (still kind of made of glass though!) The biggest thing is the world and atmosphere. It feels unique to this game, and makes you want to know more. To be fair, this game does have flaws. The jumping can feel a little janky, like you have to hold the button just a fraction of a second longer than you feel like you should for the maximum height, and you miss jumps that feel like you should be able to make. The parry seems to have some bugs, as you can parry and get hit at the same time, which feels like it shouldn't be the case. You can also get one‑shotted sometimes by enemies way beneath your level which feels like a bug as it is way more damage than you normally ever receive from them. The weapons and abilities seem a little undercooked, like they could have used more R&D to make them feel better, have more variety, and feel more rewarding. You really don't feel the need to use the abilities and alternate weapons aside from maybe 1. The world building is also a little undercooked. There is something really cool and special boiling in this game, but it feels like they never quite got it over the finish line. A lot of the map is wasted instead of fleshing things out. There also is no fast travel until you beat the game, which since they didn't build out the world as much, isn't a huge deal as backtracking doesn't gain you much. However I wish they gave you a reason to have it and you may miss it if you didn't fully explore each area before moving on. The story has some cool elements but does go exactly where you think it's going. I don't mind that they didn't spice up a kind of tried‑and‑true plot "twist", but with how interesting the building blocks of the world are I wish they had dug deeper to integrate what makes their game unique into that template. This probably sounds like a negative or "mid" review at this point, but it isn't. I just wanted to get the weaknesses out in the open before asserting just how much I loved this game. Despite these flaws, I want more. There is a great foundation here for something that I think just needs another development cycle to be outstanding, but I think if you enjoy the genre you will still have a great experience anyway. Stick with it. The opening is slow and can be a bit frustrating, but if you stick with it and get used to the mechanics and that little bit of jank, I think you will also find yourself wishing there was a sequel to queue up next. Maybe if this game can catch fire, even this many years later, we can see the dev bring these bones out of retirement and we can get a truly amazing second entry at some point.

I played and enjoyed Momodora: Moonlit Farewell long before I even considered Minoria, despite it being the earlier game and my hesitation, it seemed, was somewhat justified. I enjoyed this game - it looks good, feels good, and sounds good - but whilst the visual style was an attempt to step forward, the game takes 2 steps back in many other regards which leaves the experience feeling a bit lacking. In updating to a 2.5D style, the essence of the Momodora 'franchise' is mostly retained by the moody palettes and dark fantasy setting, but loses much of its pixellated charm. It's not hard to see why the team returned to the pixelart style for Moonlit Farewell as the animations in this game feel somewhat stiffer than other momo games. Which brings me onto my next point: I do not know for a fact how the speed of the player character compares objectively, but subjectively, in this game you feel much more sluggish - Sister Semilla, a nun, daintily jogs about rather than runs, which makes sense from a lore perspective, but not from a game design perspective. It's the first thing I noticed when starting the game so that's why i've put it first in my review. It makes moving about the sizeable game map feel more tedious than it otherwise should, which is why you'll spend 99% of your time traversing areas just spamming the roll button, which thankfully is not on a cooldown/stamina bar. Combat is responsive and feels about on par with the other Momodora titles. You now have access to collectible weapons; however they do little to change the gameplay as all the weapons obtainable through regular means have the exact same damage modifier, so apart from some different weapon abilities it mostly comes down to personal preference. There are also Incenses available which are basically replenishable magic items which have various effects on combat The bosses are, imo, much harder than in the other games, but the levelling system allows you to simply get better stats if you're having trouble with any one of them. The levelling system is actually a welcome addition and serves as a replacement for any kind of difficulty setting. Most of the boss designs are simply humanoids however and the variety of designs felt a bit lacking. Music is okay. Very similar in quality in style to the other momodora games- good, and sets the atmosphere well- but nothing particularly memorable - it does the job of setting the mood of the various areas whilst not jumping out at you, which I understand to be a necessary part of game music. Still, the boss music is mostly the same singular track for every boss - would've been nice to have more variety there. The map design is arguably one of the weakest aspects of the game, as the late game path feels like you are mostly just going in a straight line, bypassing bosses and moving on. There is only really one part that was 'ability gated' in true metroidvania style, the rest of the game depends largely on keys and bosses blocking the path. Additionally, there is no fast travel feature until after beating the game unlike RUTM which makes endgame achievement/item hunting very painful and tedious. Even once you do unlock it, you cannot warp to individual ink pots/bells/bonfires, but instead about 6 or 7 predetermined locations. Better than nothing, but would have been far improved if it was available from the start or even mid/late game. Overall I still enjoyed the game despite its shortcomings, but it doesn't hold a candle to RUTM or Moonlit Farewell. Get it with a heavy discount and you will have a fun 8ish hour experience with snappy combat but lacking much of the charm and many of the features of other Momodora games.

The basic controls are extremely stiff and unsatisfying. It's also a parry-based game with contact damage, which is a combination that simply doesn't work.

Minoria is a really enjoyable game from start to finish. The mechanics feel great, the combat is smooth and satisfying, and the difficulty is just right and challenging enough to keep things interesting without ever becoming frustrating. The bosses are fun, the atmosphere is excellent, and the art style gives the game a really unique look and feel. Everything comes together very well, from the exploration to the combat and overall presentation. It’s not a very long game (about 5-6 hours), but honestly that worked perfectly for me. It stays fun throughout the entire game. Overall, a very solid and enjoyable experience that I can easily recommend. 8.5/10.
