NaissanceE

1 / 8

I last played this game... ten years and four days ago. I still think of it often. An incredible exploration of light and sound and space. It has its missteps, certainly, but the thing was a reaction against its own format. Scorn the path and become lost; the corners will speak to you.

It's amazing. It really scratches my desire to explore a `blame-like` universe. The level design is a bit linear, but it doesn't punish you severly for dying when exploring where you want. The views are truly magnificien in some places also runs well on my 2016 hardware. The only thing I don't like is the sprint limitation. It is distracting. Thankfully one can at least disable the icon once you got a feel for it. (I played it a lot longer than it shows in offline mode)

The game is pretty good and a very niche piece of art, but a section towards the end seems specifically designed to give you a seizure. I literally cannot look at the screen cause everything is a damn strobe light.

A stunning journey through audacious architecture in a labyrinth of shadow and light. Visuals are arresting with concrete facades and alien materials overwhelming with their non-euclidean monumentality. The interplay between light and dark form a core mechanic of traversal and puzzle solving where blinding luminance gives way to soft silhouettes and rays of light sneak through otherwise impenetrable stonework. It's difficult writing reviews for experiential games like NaissanceE if only because describing favourable aspects reveals too much of the mystery. I found myself more thoroughly detailing those few aspects I did not like but that in no way short sells my absolute recommendation. Though an outstanding experience, too often the darkness overreaches in ways that proved entirely unnavigable. I found myself fumbling about hoping something would change or a light source would shift to no avail requiring maxing out the gamma setting just to chance upon a vague glimmer. This is not a criticism of the design per se but an unavoidable consequence of it. So too the platforming was excessively clunky for the demands presented. Deeper into Madness, for all its fantastical ideas was in my opinion overly laden with esoteric sequences. It is a chapter that even for a game with little in the way of narrative was densely incoherent presenting more as a series of vignettes taped together. I suppose it is a matter of personal preference but I feel the disparate sections would have been better served as separated transitional interludes between the chapters or interrupting dream sequences. I felt the music did not meet the expectation of the setting neither reflecting the overwhelming scale nor bizarreness of the world and architecture. It itself and the way it was implemented seemed to lean closer towards emphasizing the more modestly perplexing visuals but even in this it falls flat. Then at the penultimate desert section, the music completely flounders. The harmonious melodies of the performance area give way to discordant saxophone screeching and the ambient sounds of the desert degenerate to cacophonous noise at the vision towers. One could at best attribute the changing character to the degradation of the environment but this is tenuous at best and by this point on the sound track was simply not good. Even so, the journey was unforgettable and one I would happily pay for. The ambition and beautiful execution of geometric grandeur outshone its deficiencies. We are confined to a haunting realization of isolation and in that cryptic adversity through the dark we endeavour to find the light.

Promising game, but the gameplay is incredibly confusing and disorienting. The timed trials only add to the frustration, while the extreme contrast between blinding white and pitch-black areas makes navigation even worse, forcing you to rush through an already confusing environment.

Naissaince is a unique, brutalist nightmare of epic proportions. Never have i seen a game so effectively weaponize the use of lighting to induce anxiety, paranoia, and confusion in the player. This magnificent usage of lighting elevates this experience from a relatively straightforward 3d-platformer into an one-of-a-kind hallucinogenic-horror that stands out as one of the best free games available on STEAM. Be Warned: the (intentionally) chaotic and physics-defying lighting will literally drive some players to rage quit.

Honestly it was very refreshing to play a game that doesn't take you by the hand and gives you a hint and direction marker every five seconds you stand still. It can become a bit frustrating at times when you really don't know what to look for, and there was one awful section in the later third that physically hurt to play with all the strobe lights in pure white and pitch black. The end just... happened. Not much of a conclusion or explanation, I guess the experience is the whole part, and that's totally valid because it was a great experience! Super beautiful scenery in many many levels, artistic to the full extent. P.S. my uni professor made us play this in class, thanks for the recommendation I guess
