It's been massively overhated for the anime style, cringe story, bad music etc, which are all fair points, but the game is still well worth it at the 90% off price it regularly goes on sale for. Only reason this review is negative is the absolute asspain their useless ea launcher still is in 2026. Trying to get back to this game after not playing it for months and having to wait a whole day for a recovery code to come by email is a joke.

Recommended — but only if you know what you're getting into. Need for Speed Unbound is one of those games that I have a weird relationship with. There are things about this game that I absolutely love, things that genuinely make me think Criterion still understands what makes an arcade street-racing game fun, and then there are other things that make me wonder how the same game can be so close to being amazing while constantly getting in its own way. After spending a good amount of time with it, I think Unbound is much better than its reputation sometimes suggests, but I also completely understand why some people bounced off it. At its best, this is a ridiculously fun arcade racer with great driving, a beautiful open world, a good car selection, excellent customization, satisfying police chases, and a visual style that actually gives it an identity. At its worst, it can feel unnecessarily grindy, repetitive, awkwardly paced, and held back by design decisions that make you wonder why the developers didn't just let the good parts breathe. The first thing you're going to notice is the art style. Yes, the characters have cartoon/anime-inspired effects. Yes, the clothing and character designs can look goofy. Yes, the game sometimes looks like somebody took a realistic racing game and threw graffiti stickers all over it. But honestly? I ended up liking it. The combination of realistic cars, realistic environments, animated characters, and exaggerated effects gives Unbound an identity that a lot of racing games don't have. You can absolutely dislike the aesthetic, and that's fair, but at least the game is trying something different. When you're driving at night, with city lights reflecting off your car, exhaust flames popping out, smoke pouring from the tires, and visual effects appearing during races, the game can look genuinely fantastic. Lakeshore is also a pretty good open world. It isn't the most memorable racing map ever made, but it works extremely well for street racing. You've got highways, city streets, industrial areas, bridges, tunnels, hills, shortcuts, and different road layouts. The map isn't just there to look pretty. You actually learn it. After enough time, you start remembering which roads are good for escaping cops, which shortcuts can save a race, where traffic tends to screw you over, and which corners you can take without destroying your momentum. That's exactly what I want from an arcade racing game. And then there's the driving. This is probably my favorite part of Unbound. The cars feel fast. Not "the speedometer says 200 MPH" fast. Actually fast. When you get a good run through a series of corners, build up your nitrous, hit a jump, land cleanly, and blast down a straight while traffic barely gets out of the way, the game feels fantastic. The handling is obviously arcade-focused. This isn't a simulator, and it shouldn't be. This is Need for Speed. There is still enough tuning and enough difference between builds that you can develop preferences. You can build cars around grip, drifting, acceleration, top speed, or some combination of everything. And when you find a setup that works for you, there is something really satisfying about taking a car you originally hated and turning it into something you genuinely enjoy driving. The customization is another one of the strongest parts of the game. Body kits, bumpers, spoilers, wheels, paint, wraps, stance, exhausts, window tint, ride height, and other details give you a ridiculous amount of freedom. I especially like that you can make cars look clean instead of being forced to turn every car into an over-the-top show build. You can make something tasteful. You can make something stupid. You can make something that looks like it belongs in a street-racing movie. You can make something that looks like it escaped from a car meet at 2 AM. That's the fun. The car selection is also solid. There's a good mixture of modern supercars, classics, Japanese cars, American muscle, European cars, and other enthusiast favorites. The post-launch updates also made the overall package much larger than what was available at launch, adding new modes, cars, PVP features, and other content. That matters because the original release sometimes felt like it had a lot of potential that hadn't been fully realized yet. But now we get to the part where I start complaining. Because this game has some seriously annoying design decisions. The single-player campaign is simultaneously one of the most interesting and frustrating parts of Unbound. I like the general idea. You're building up your garage, earning money, winning races, dealing with rivals, surviving police pursuits, and eventually working toward The Grand. The weekly structure is a cool concept. The problem is the pacing. The game can feel like it's constantly asking you to do things you don't necessarily want to do simply because that's how the progression system is structured. The buy-in system for races can also be annoying. Sometimes you see an event and think, "Yeah, I'd like to do that." Then you realize you need a certain amount of cash. So you go do another event. Then another. Then you get chased by cops. Then you finally get back to the safehouse. Then you discover you still don't have enough money. It creates this strange rhythm where the game occasionally feels less like you're living a street-racing fantasy and more like you're doing financial administration for a fictional criminal organization. The progression can make the game feel grindier than it needs to be. The racing itself is fun enough that I wish the game trusted it more. Just let me race. Let me pick an event. Let me pick my car. Let me drive. I don't need five layers of progression systems to convince me that racing is fun. The rubber-banding can also be frustrating. There are moments where the AI feels completely reasonable. Then there are moments where you swear the game decided somebody else needs to win. You can absolutely lose races because you made mistakes, and that's fair. But there are situations where the AI feels inconsistent enough that it's difficult to tell whether you lost because you drove badly or because the game decided the race needed more drama. Traffic is another classic Need for Speed problem. Sometimes traffic adds tension. Sometimes traffic is hilarious. Sometimes traffic is the most annoying object in the universe. You can be driving perfectly, taking a corner beautifully, managing your nitrous, preparing an overtake... and then a random civilian SUV appears in exactly the right place to destroy your entire race. I know traffic is supposed to make street racing unpredictable. But sometimes it doesn't feel unpredictable. It feels personal. And the police are similarly complicated. When the pursuit system works, it's great. Getting chased through the city while trying to find a route back to a safehouse is one of the most entertaining things in the game. You start improvising. You take shortcuts. You jump over things. You turn down random streets. You try to break line of sight. That is classic Need for Speed. But there are also moments where the police become more annoying than exciting. Sometimes you just want to finish what you're doing and suddenly you're dealing with another pursuit. Still, I'd rather have an annoying police system than no police system at all. The soundtrack is another thing that's going to divide people. There are tracks here that I genuinely like. There are also tracks that I immediately wanted to skip. It fits the game's personality, but whether you'll enjoy it depends heavily on your taste. The same goes for the characters. I understand what the game is going for. It wants to feel young, stylish, loud, rebellious, and exaggerated. But sometimes the dialogue is REALLY trying to remind you that it is young, stylish, loud, rebellious, and exaggera

Horrible... I wanted to like this game, and I did put the time towards that. Its not the corny story, or the horrible balance and difference between vehicle classes. Its the fact that the cops for the sake of giving the player "a challenge" they literally spawn 5 meters away from you and start a chase, no matter what wanted level you are at. Thats not how you give players a challenge, that how you continue to drive fans away. You know its bad when you rather play a bad simulator than a bad arcade game that takes itself to seriously, but being a joke. I will uninstall, and will not install ever again, hiding from library. Aged like cheese...
