Never Alone: Foxtales

1 / 8

I know another story. I heard this one from Panik. There were two friends. One of them was a good fighter in Inupiaq games, and a good hunter. One was a good swimmer. The two friends were brave. Whenever they would cross the sea, they would use only willow as their boat paddles...

Spring has come to the Arctic and Nuna and Fox return in Never Alone: Foxtales -- the first expansion to 2014’s award-winning indie hit Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) .

Travel across open seas, swim through the ruins of a sunken village and paddle up the Noatak River on a mission to rescue a new friend. You’ll need all your wits and the skills of both companions to survive the dangers of the swirling currents, fierce creatures and hidden underwater hazards of the Alaska coast. Only by working together can Nuna and Fox save their friend and defeat an unexpected foe.

Foxtales features three all new levels full of environments to explore, puzzles to solve and enemies to face. Developed in partnership with the Alaska Native community, Foxtales reminds us that some challenges are best faced together and that even the smallest among us deserve respect. Features

Take to the seas -- Climb aboard your umiaq (a sealskin canoe) and take to the waters of the coasts, rivers and lakes of Northwest Alaska. Paddle through waves, ice floes and rapids or dive underwater and journey across the sea floor, inside mysterious caverns and through a sunken village.

Seek the help of the spirits and your companion -- Discover spirit helpers who can change the course of currents at your command. Switch between Nuna and Fox in single player mode or play with a friend in local co-op mode.

Explore Alaska Native culture -- Foxtales includes five new unlockable Cultural Insight videos featuring members of the Alaska Native community including the family of Willie Panik Goodwin, Sr., the storyteller whose tale of “The Two Coastal Brothers” inspired the game.

Never Alone's mainline game suffers from a few things that kinda only matter in a longer gaming session. The lack of visual variety, the odd mix of folktales, and the gameplay loop that it provides. With Never Alone Foxtales, I feel delivers a better and simpler experience because it's in a smaller scope. Foxtales is about a girl and a fox that chase a mouse and end up encountering an even bigger one that is plaguing the lake they are in. The game never really stays too long in one area with the majority of it being a linear path with a bunch of block-aid puzzles. On top of that, the game slowly builds up it's pacing with the majority of the beginning being about moving forward in your boat to suddenly encountering these evil hands in the water, and then finally the giant mouse. And that mouse is scary! I freaked out when I first saw it because I was not expecting the game to go that hard. But with how gruesome the deaths are, it really added to the suspense of that scenario. On top of the hands in the water, and the simple puzzles really help highlight to me what Never Alone could be. Not exactly that it fixes all the parts that Never Alone struggled with, as it's DLC can only do so much. The same control issues and gameplay are here with little change save for the excitement of the scenario itself. By providing a proper threat and not lingering too long it hits this good narrative structure that works better than the original game's story. There is only so much you can do with DLC though, and while I had a better time with Foxtales than the main line game, Never Alone still feels like it's finding itself. I feel if they just went more in on visuals or fixed controls to be smoother we really start to get somewhere with the game it's trying to be. As it is though, Foxtales works because the issues don't linger on much and the story is faster paced, but that doesn't really do anything better than the mainline game aside from being shorter. And if the game being shorter makes it better, it kinda only feels like a backhanded compliment.
