before i start this review - i ADORE this game (will explain). this is a MIXED review, not negative. ^w^ for context, when it was coming out, i was OBSESSED with stampy's playthrough of this game (highly recommend for the voices + good vibes alone), and sunk 250+ hours into it myself (on a friend's acct, hence only 50hrs here since i bought it again), along with playing a good chunk of the DLC. basically, this game is like a comfort food to me - really satisfying, comforting, and tastes lovely, but it won't fill me up and sometimes i'm contemplating my life choices in regards to it while leaned over the toilet (/jk). so basically, do i like this game? hell yes!!!! <333 so, why did i review as negative? well... it's not a good game overall. very much a 'mixed review option would be appreciated' type of game. let's start with the pros, bc it has some!! + kingdom building is fun and helps you along your journey, but isn't hugely complicated. for me, a win! but not for some people. it's fun and layered enough to be interesting, but it isn't hugely detailed. + character design is really nice - none of your recruits or main/side characters look bad and a lot of them have very nice designs!! that's hard to do with 100 recruits and several main/side characters, so HUGE props to the artists! <333 + the music is lovely. voice acting is also lovely - when it's actually voice-acted. sound design is good, but nothing stand-out from what i remember. artstyle is stunning in 2d drawings that happen every so often, and the 3d models/environment are lovely, genuinely. aaaand for the cons: - NNK was partially drawn by studio ghibli. NNK2 had no studio ghibli. the art team did a wonderful job!!! but the franchise definitely lost a lot of its original artistic charm due to that. - partial voice-acting. if your game is going to have a LOT of cutscenes (easily 50% of most runtimes at least), and you have the budget (which level-5 does), PLEASE do full-voice acting (yippee, more pay for VAs!! <3), or at least an option to change from partial voiceover to 'only when cutscenes have fully-voiced dialogue, otherwise no voice-acting lines like 'oh!' 'hm...' and 'w-wait!' every two seconds' ;w; - lots of cutscenes. i like this personally, but i know many don't! putting it in cons though due to the partial voice-acting mentioned previously making me slightly less warm to it. - only paragraph that will be off-topic from the actual game dw!!, as it was made prior to these changes, but to get it out of the way, level-5 (the devs) are pro-ai, and generate assets/code/ask it for ideas in their new games. bad for environment, imagination, jobs of any kind of artists, and even if you don't care about that (boo), then... do you want to support a studio that can't even be bothered to make its own games itself? let me be clear, NNK2 did NOT use ai during its development - i only bring this up to make people aware of the fact that if you decide to buy this game, you ARE indirectly supporting the devs to make ai slop games. i bought NNK2 prior to finding this out, otherwise i probably wouldn't have. (also NNK3 technically exists but it's a crypto/NFT game so avoid that lol, and the movie is very much mediocre-or-bad in most ppl's opinions) :P - the dungeons. STARS I HATE THE DUNGEONS. okay look i'm completely fine with dungeons in video games, but it's not a great sign when A) i can recognise the exact same dungeon layout which has been copy/pasted 5 times already in different parts of the map, and B) the halls connecting rooms take about 25secs to run through with nothing inside of them. this is a huge problem that i completely blocked from my memory since i last played this game. argh. - the story. holds your hand gently in mine. the story is painfully mediocre. it's got elements of charm and silly things and interesting ideas (ch7 is my favourite for reference), but - and esp in comparison to the first game, but really to all games in general - it does nothing with them, and often feels like a missed opportunity. - the characters. evan (the main character) feels... kinda nothing-y? and all the other main characters, except him and roland, have their moments of importance in one chapter, and then are shunted to the side for the rest of the game. it felt like they were closer to 2d cutouts of character archetypes than actually fleshed-out characters. now, the DLC (tale of a timeless tome) DID expand on their pasts, and i loved that!!! but it isn't included in the main game, and doesn't change how much they were ignored in it, so..... eh. - fighting. okay do you like the fighting of 'mash X repeatedly until you win'. bc then woohoo you'll love this game!! i just kinda feel like the first game's combat (while much more awkward to get used to + your party members dying every two seconds and wasting items/magic was common, which this game thankfully fixes), was MUCH more interesting and unique. this game is more a 'turn your brain off'-type combat, whereas NNK gave a slight challenge - an annoying one at times, sure - but a FUN one. i'm biased though lol so make your own judgement here!! :D - DLCs. okay do you like the fighting of 'mash X repeatedly until you win'. but grindier. (tale of a timeless tome is CERTAINLY not exempt from this issue, but at least you have cool backstories to motivate you to keep going...) - the ending's twist is SHOCKINGLY bad. without spoilers, the reveal is a concept that the first game focused a lot around, and this game... didn't. at all. the FIRST time you hear of this concept is at the end of the game. so basically it's only a cool moment if you played NNK, and considering you don't need to to play this game, then that's.... really dumb. either foreshadow it in THIS game, or insist you need to play 1 to play 2. speaking of which... - this game, a lot of the time, feels like level-5 wanted to make another isekai game that wasn't NNK-related, but slapped the franchise name on for the sake of it. i often forget that the first game was meant to have happened in this universe, bc the entire world, battle system, and distinct lack of magic/silly aspects being so different (eg. in combat, in the first game, you have a stick, a wand, a harp, and a steal-things-gun. all pretty unique/magical! in this game, you get swords, axes, bows, etc., which are all fine, but a lot more cookie-cutter RPG). beyond my gripes with the combat in general, the complete lack of familiars makes no sense, and is never explained afaik? half my issues regarding NNK2 would be void if they just... didn't slap the franchise label on it. - lofty is a huge huge huge downgrade from drippy (first game's protagonist-supporter). i am SO sorry but he has none of the whimsical charm drippy had and it feels like he's just there Because It's Funny To Have A Comic Relief Character, while making jokes surrounding him + his personality incredibly plain in comparison to drippy. the fact that i forget he exists half the time, whereas my family (who i showed clips of NNK to in 2018) still remember drippy to this day lol, and they didn't even play the game! so. yes, i love this game. but i love this game in a way that i love a rat who may or may not have rabies - adorable, but maybe a mistake to get too close! aka complicated feelings. this game could be SO much better, and i wish it was. go play NNK if you're in it for the odd but fun combat and wonderful story. go play NNK2 if you want kingdom management and the standard 'mash-X' battle system. but, really, there are so many games like NNK2 that are just... better. i might love this game, but giving it a recommended review wouldn't be right for me. plus any criticisms will be drowned out if i leave it as positive, so it's easier for people to see the issues if negatively-reviewed :'D

Played this game pirates ages ago lol but loved it so much I decided to add it to my collection. Played it before there were any DLC for it and now i got to enjoy it again. I did find the DLC content to be super grindy, repetitive and rather boring. I'd still recommend this game to anyone. It's a classic.

LEVEL5 has killed any love I have had for any games they make over the years. This one was one of the best and I wish I could still care but everything new they do is AI and they even did the NFT thing at one point. I can recommend supporting anything they do now. Will you like and have fun with this game if you play it? yeah I guess most will. But really do you want to support them?
