Nightwater

If you are expecting Factorio, you're going to have a bad time. If you're expecting a game inspired by Outpath with interesting incremental minigames to play as your automation setups produce materials, then you're going to enjoy it a lot.

The game is the definition of stall. The automation isn't great, and the crafting is secondary to 5 mini games, with inconsistent scaling which make up the bulk of the game. 2 you can eventually scale to clear through and keep up with the increasing cost, but three of them are like watching paint dry, with one having no meta progression what so ever to help. Then, the finale of the game is to do all 5 of them in a row, with no bonus from any of the progression you made in the minigames. The platforming especially is terrible, and the final portion so if you get stuck you have to redo the entire section each attempt. Plus there are in game puzzles with no indicator in game what to do, and there would be no way to figure it out without being told. Save yourself 20 hours and go play something with better platforming.

I wish there was a thumbs up/down 50/50 I mean, straight to full release without a bunch of early access? Looks pretty, is functional? Yes, I have to give it that. BUT.. it's just boring. I have 1000+ hours in Satisfactory, this is my type of game, but it's just too... plain. After unlocking 5 areas... it's not an automation game, it's just like a grindy basic game. Like a mobile tycoon game. I don't care about the lighthouse I don't care about my memories I don't care about the minigame There is zero drive for me to continue. 4.7 hours at time of review. I will bet everything that no matter when you read this review, it will be 4.7 hours on record. This is being uninstalled and I'll forget it existed by tomorrow.

I really tried to like this. I like automation games but this one somehow doesn't click with me. So I aborted this around mid-end 3rd biome. The gameplay loop is way too grindy starting around the third biome, the automation is not very rewarding and tedious, the minigames feel off and are still required to get some more advanced buildings, the story is not catching enough to make me care about it, menu and build handling is way to clunky for a game of this genre (too much back and forth for simple things). It tries too many things at the same time and excellents in none. If you like grindy games then ignore this review, this game still might be something you could enjoy. If you like automation games like Factorio, Satisfactory and co, you might want to skip this one.

Not quite finished but I'm at the point where I'm about ready to put this down. I normally enjoy automation and incremental games, but Nightwater— though it gave me a few hours of enjoyment near the beginning— quickly became more of a burden than anything else. Frankly, it's boring. There is no dialogue between the player and the game: no push and pull. Despite giving you upgrades to your attack power, speed, and even an item which allows for flight, none of these upgrades feel meaningful in any way. The resources scale with your damage in such a way that you never feel more powerful than you were before the upgrade, the speed upgrades are practically useless, and even the flight is oddly limited. As for automation, there may as well be none at all. Sure, they give you the machines, but no real incentive to use them. A player could completely ignore the auto-crafting entirely in favor of doing everything by hand, and they wouldn't even take much longer than a player who does use them. The minigames you discover in the world are definitely the best parts of this game, but even those are far too short and shallow to keep you occupied for long. I enjoyed the Forest and Mountain minigames, but none of the others did much for me at all. Expectedly, the story is uninteresting. I can't speak much about it because I haven't finished this game yet, but so far, there is no real effort made by the game to make it particularly engaging. You'll find sparse "Memories" spread around the world, which deliver vague, ominous messages... but that's all. If you're BRAND NEW to Automation games, I suppose this might be a decent gateway to them, but if you have any experience with, or expectations of the genre you may be left disappointed, as I was.

This game is an instant buy. It's one of the best or maybe even the best indie games this year. It feels completely smooth right from the beginning. I mostly give up on other automation games because I get headaches from weird concepts/mechanics or out of boredom. But the way automation is done here plays in the same league as Factorio or Satisfactory. (It is by far not as complicated or intricate but automation is done right) And also it is an full release in this economy and in 2026 no 1-2 year early access I've finished it now. It is refreshing to have a game which doesn't make things complicated just because it makes sense in real life. I really like that you can craft everything by hand and don't have to run to furnaces or other machines. (You have to use machines for big quantities, but if you're just missing one iron ingot, you don't have to backtrack to earths begining.) Thanks for that! It is a nice foragerlike with an unique twist, which makes it stand out enough. It is also made with love. It is no AI slop or asset swap (crazy to have to say it in an review) I really hope to see more from this dev. I encountered 2 Bugs. For 20 hours this is nothing, also 2 days in from release. 1 I feel trough the world (Unstuck button) Don't know when (Spoilers ahead) It's kind of game-breaking, at the end key of the minigames (or whatever it's called). You can get stuck because the pickaxe functions get removed before you have the way completely cleared (just don't remove the function). Also please dev fix this´chapter, it is so frustrating to redo everything because the time ran out. A nice addition would be to make your minigame progress count here

I can't recommend this game. There is no real automation. The only reason you would want to automate production is to have them produce while you play minigames. If you want to get through the story, you can absolutely gather and produce everything by hand. It won't be that much longer than setting up automation and playing the minigames in the meantime. Minigames are active incremental games and not very interesting. Trailer led me to believe this was something else..

Some of the best automation games find ways to mix the factory goals with other mechanics. Nightwater does this with semi-incremental minigames. This makes a pretty good impression in the demo, but it isn't enough to sustain a whole game. The diversions just don't have the depth or integration to stand as more than temporary distractions, and the poor controls and lackluster factory building mechanics keep this from ever settling in recommendable territory. As a factory game it's just bland. There are inscrutable decisions like not letting you easily feed from inventory into a storage and defaulting to a hard-to-reach key for all building selections (with no hotbar). You eventually get a jetpack upgrade for no apparent reason as it doesn't fit the lore and it isn't stable enough to help with actual building. Automation isn't needed for much of the game, and to finish you have to run a gauntlet of timed repeats of all the minigames with none of the upgrades you've worked to unlock. The ending and obscure bits of text along the way contribute nothing to the experience. If you play this, it's going to be because it's something to do, and it's decent enough as a distraction. But being different as factory games go doesn't make it worthwhile, and in the absence of a neutral option, I have to lean negative on this one.
