No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

1 / 8

Travis Touchdown here. It's been three years since I clawed my way to #1 in the United Assassins Association. I thought it'd be fine to take it easy for a while after that, but it looks like I rested on my laurels a little too long.

I found myself sliding down the ranks all the way to #51, and to make things worse, some other assassin—Skelter Helter—comes out and starts nagging my head off about me killing his brother or something. So yeah, a real pain in the you-know-what.

Fueled by a thirst for vengeance (and a bit of good old-fashioned greed), I whipped out my beam katana once more and plunged headfirst into one helluva desperate struggle.

Experience the frenetic hack-and-slash gameplay of the sequel to No More Heroes in glorious HD! With more characters to play as and even more foes to stand in your way, there's never a dull moment in the world of No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle .

Featuring three playable characters, the ability to dual-wield beam katanas, and even bigger baddies to battle, this sexy sequel is a wild ride with more to love than ever before.

Kick back, grab a slice, and get ready to dive into a mind-melting drama the likes of which you've never seen! Features

Full, unedited version of the review here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11lpbCS-BMyCAPJrSTTtemC8VRTjnhyQinfvvNvHQ74o/mobilebasic I'm not gonna lie when I say this, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is perhaps the most polarizing game I've ever played in my life thus far. This game is the definition of two-faced, it has a lot of really good ideas and executions within it but there's also a lot of really poorly handled or outright bad sections to this game that hinder the overall experience. A lot of people will say that Travis Strikes Again or NMH3 are the black sheep(s) of the series for one reason or another, whether it be the stories, the different gameplay, the graphics, etc but those very same arguments can be lent over to NMH2 which does the very things that those two games do better in their own ways. In my opinion at least, even though NMH2 is a great game and you can have a lot of fun with it, it is the black sheep of the series for more than one reason. I should also mention that in this port of NMH2 there is a really annoying bug where if you go out and do something like hit the gym for upgrades or grind to get more money to buy the other two beam katanas and you go back to Travis' motel to save, the game can sometimes crash. This happened to me two separate times and the first time it happened I was just done grinding money on that really annoying space garbage minigame to get the Peonie and I was distraught when my game crashed like that because that meant I had to grind all over again. There were no other crashes or game breaking bugs I encountered and this can be avoided if you play through a ranking fight and get sent to the motel to properly save your game that way. I really want to talk about the minigames and other connected points to this because even though most of them are fun like the pizza delivery one, the steak cooking one, and the bug catching game, they unintentionally reveal the biggest problem with this entire game and that is that it misses the point of why things were the way they were in NMH1. You see, the jobs in NMH1 were 'boring' because it was meant to be subtext to show the cold reality of Travis' life while also being a mirror to real life gamers who have to work their real jobs and earn cash in order to 'get to the next level' so to speak by buying new games or moving forward in games they have. The same thing goes for the actual ranking fights too as it was all meant to be a subtle commentary on violent power fantasies that games offer but in NMH2, the story overall feels less grounded and more like it's trying way too hard than its predecessor and I can pinpoint the exact moment that the story goes overboard with how 'crazy' it can get compared to NMH1's story, its the fight with Charlie. Sure, the boss is fun to fight but it's moments like this that just don't feel like they belong in No More Heroes, yes NMH has always had bizarre and out there elements and especially with the future games like TSA or NMH3 but the difference is that those games manage to maintain that same narrative tone as the first game and don't feel like they're trying too hard to be cool but in NMH2 there are a lot of story beats and moments that just feel like it's trying to capture the essence of what made the first game so good. But this is where the two-faced nature of this game comes out as while there are poorly executed parts of the story, there's also some really good parts like with how Travis gets steadily sick of being treated like a toy by the UAA and lets Sylvia really have it by the end of the Alice fight. There's also the strip club scenes with Sylvia and Travis that really help deepen Sylvia's character as she's shown at her lowest and poorest point and at the very end of the game, the conversation that Travis and Sylvia have really shows how deep their relationship has become, an actual human connection has been formed between two ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up people. There's also the amazing Philistine song during the Margaret fight that tears Travis down and everything he stands for in this game and the previously mentioned fight with Alice is really good with how she's characterized before and after the actual fight and the OST in this game is not only excellent as always but if you listen throughout the game you begin to notice how it adds to the atmosphere of the game with the biggest example being the lead-up to Alice where the stage has no music at first but as you keep going, you begin to hear this melancholic piano tune start to play which subtly shows us that Travis has had enough of these ranking fights and constant killing while also foreshadowing the tragedy of Alice as a character. I feel like the game's story starts off weird but as the game goes on, the story becomes on par with the other NMH games because of how good the characters are written in the late game in my opinion. Of course the two faced nature shows up again because even though I just said that, the story misses the mark with certain characters like Shinobu and Henry where Shinobu has a strange crush on Travis for some reason and Henry is barely utilized in the story and only has one boss fight. Which is extremely weird because Shinobu has two boss fights to herself so it feels like such a missed opportunity to not have Henry fight the other three assassins Travis was meant to fight. It makes you wonder why they even added him in due to how short his inclusion is and this weird problem of 'why did they do that?' persists throughout the game like with the bike section leading up to Vladimir literally just being an empty road with obstacles that can't hurt you and with no enemies in sight. It feels like they just forgot to add in enemies due to how empty it feels and there's also the previously mentioned Shinobu fights which kind of suck due to the platforming in those levels, especially the New Destroyman boss which literally can last 14 minutes or more because of how you have to fight two Destroymen at once who revive each other which leads to you running over to one of them and them fleeing and this continues for the whole fight. Adding onto this gameplay dilemma, you knew I couldn't mention all this without mentioning ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Jasper Batt Jr's phase 2 and 3. Oh my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ god, it was as bad as people have said it was for years before I played this game. His teleporting punches are literally RNG and he can do it repeatedly nonstop until you die and there is no way to escape if he decides to do it to you which is completely random and if he does it by a window then you're cooked as you can die by being knocked out of it and there's also his phase 3 where midway through the fight where he does this breathing attack that's an AOE attack and unavoidable so that means that if you run out of battery then you might ♥♥♥♥♥♥ by how long he does that stupid ass attack and he can do it multiple times too just like with his teleporting punches. Getting back to the good parts of this game, the combat itself feels great and I really like it, I especially love the variety of swords Travis can use as they all function differently from one another and my personal favorites were the Rose Nasty and the Peonie. Most of the bosses despite being lackluster in a narrative sense most times actually are very fun fights and especially with fights like Ryuji, Alice, Margaret, and Matt Helms, they really make you stay on your toes and focus because they can easily mess you up if you let your guard down. On the whole, No More Heroes 2 has a lot of great highs and poor lows for the series but ultimately it's not a terrible game and I recommend that people play it alongside the other three NMH games in the series. It's a great time if you can accept the flaws this game has compared to the other entries in this series and If I scored this game it'd be a solid 8/10.

Worse than the first game in every single aspect. Game basically guaranteed to crash at one of the bosses unless you do some compatibility ♥♥♥♥, the story is worse somehow even though the first game barely has one??, the gameplay is whatever and just really really boring and every single boss in this game is ass minus maybe 2 or 3 bosses, theyre not hard just really boring and easy. Minigames got downgraded to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ NES-like games that are worse than the original sidejobs and they basically killed the assassination missions to "replace" them with revenge missions which are literal nothingburgers. ♥♥♥♥ this game I hate it so so much, if you can, dont even bother with this one just play the first game which is actually GOOD. Note: the music is good actually*

A friend recommended this and the first No More Heroes because i liked other hack and slash games like Devil May Cry and classic God of War and man im glad he did because this game is a great time, excellent gameplay and a interesting albeit at times amusing narrative. The only drawbacks are some of the side missions can be rather frustrating and the final boss can be as well. In summary this is fun game for people who enjoy hack and slash with only one or two annoying moments.

50% chance that it crashes every time you enter a loading screen. I'm quite disappointed, since I really liked the first game.

This game still stands to the test of time one of thee greatest video games known to mankind while still having some choices gameplay wise being polarizing to some to the true fan it was a staple of its time narratively it retcons some decisions from the first game but still delivers an amazing atmosphere and world building that exceeds the first games attempt while not getting ahead of itself or unwitting the level of humor and writing is one of the best and while the gameplay is upgraded it is not as tight as the first game but has its own gimmicks to master mainly how dodging works the only con this game has is the shinobu sections of the game they were closely undercooked and rushed for this game cause she is god awful to play as Henry on the other hand is still fun and enjoyable to play as with his moveset not being hard to master in his 1 level travis is easily the best in this game his choices of beam katanas from the blood berry to the tsubaki MK3 Peony and Rose Nasty make the game replayable and fun to experience it may not change up his moves to an extreme level but they still offer a unique way of playing through levels your own way the wrestling mechanics are not as tight as 1 but when you land them they get the job done and feel satisfying to pull off just like the executions easily the best addition to this series especially with boss executions this game oozes style and perfectly encapsulates a time frame of life and gaming that is still unmatched in its aesthetic and style this game and goichi suda deserve praise even though he didn't direct this game as much as the first his involvement is still felt and seen even if it was small this game will forever take me back to the early 2010s of my years and im grateful I get to still enjoy it to this day on modern consoles and PC compared to 3 this game and 1 are ten times better

Very good game I had a lot of fun. I'm glad they got rid of the annoying open world, it sucked ass. The combat was a little more simple and you couldn't kill like 8 enemies with 1 swing. They made the women hotter though so that's also a plus. The minigames also are much better. It is all very good but it's missing something I just can't point to that existed in No More Heroes 1. But obviously I would rather replay this game than the first one. I give it a 9.2.
