DISCLAIMER: You can't go wrong with a game at this price point, I definitely think you should give it a shot, I could refund it since I didn't really enjoy it but the game is cheap and I think even if you play it and don't enjoy it, you shouldn't refund it. It's not like this is some AI slop kernel level spyware, so support the devs. ---------------------- If you like gambling, you might have some fun with this If you wanted something like Buckshot Roulette... I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. Unfortunately, RNG is a much bigger "issue" here. I put "issue" in quotes because it's essentially designed around RNG, it's the main controlling factor of the gameplay experience and if you're okay with that then you're probably going to have a lot more fun than I did. Buckshot Roulette has RNG but the gameplay system gives you many options, to the point where you can feel in control of the game a lot of the time and think multiple turns ahead if you simply put your brain to work. This is not a central element of O.B.O.L. The biggest example of this is the very first game, the one you play after every restart. You have no items, you can only bet 1 cap, and it's always a 2 to 1 ratio on the sides of the coin... It's brain-dead. You will obviously choose the side that is more likely, always. This also means you'll lose 1/4 or 1/5 of the first games even though you made all the correct choices... In fact, that is exactly what happened in my first game. They give you items after you pass this game, but even still the game was in control of the outcome a lot more than I was. It's mostly a game of "how can I protect my caps for as long as possible" and "sure, why not gamble 5 caps on these 4/7 odds". Guessing wrong is way too punishing, guessing right is not always super rewarding. Outside the main game... I also have some issues. You can explore your surroundings Inscryption-style and interact with things. After you win the 2nd game, you can get up again and interact with the same things. To my surprise, some of those things had changed... 2 of those things lead to an ending... So like.. I mean that's cool and all... But warn me first? I just clicked on them and suddenly it's game over? Gotta restart? It really is more about the story than the gameplay which is a shame, all these endings and surprise sequences tell you a bit more about who you are which is cool, but the RNG-centric experience is not fun enough to keep replaying multiple times to reach multiple endings. Most games feel the same and you just don't feel like losing or winning was ever really up to you...

Between Inscryption, Buckshot Roulette, and O.B.O.L, I've come to the realization that games where you play an unfair board game against a powerful evil entity may be one of my favorite genres. In all seriousness, O.B.O.L is a short but great experience with a lot to offer. I played a decent amount of the demo, so I was eager to jump in and try the full release right when it came out. From the start, it is clear that the developers nailed the atmosphere of this experience. Although you can move around the submarine you're trapped in at certain points, the range of movement is quite limited. This forces the Corporate man to remain in the back of your head at all times, creating a claustrophobic and tense scene that kept me on edge. Next, the gameplay of the coinflip game is fun and surprisingly thoughtful despite its simplicity at the start. While the first round was originally a little dull (as I mentioned in the original version of this review), a new update has made it more engaging and easier to get through. Subsequent rounds introduce items which allow for you to manipulate your chances of succeeding and are a very good addition, but the biggest mechanical difference compared to Buckshot Roulette for me (and the one that made this game super interesting) was the ability to increase the amount of caps you want to bet. Since caps are both your life and your damage source (in that winning a bet damages the Corporate man), I was repeatedly put in situations where I really had to consider whether or not to go all in. If I lost, it not only meant I was closer to dying, but also that I would have less caps to bet in situations where I was positive of the outcome. It's a cool spin on this game concept, and one that really matters since the Corporate man is a dangerous competitor. Seriously, his AI is not a pushover and WILL kill you from full health if he can. Since the game is so short, those situations were a little frustrating but ultimately not that much of a big deal to me (though I can see how it may annoy some). Finally, this game also has a decently intriguing story. While not wholly clear from the start, the backstory is unveiled slowly through off-hand comments and flashback scenes which reveal the player character's motivations and the aquatic gods behind the scenes. I think I've seen every scene at this point, and they were super cool the first time I saw them. However, they aren't things I plan on triggering every time I play (which you can do if you know the right options on the survey), so the value in my mind only comes from the first time you see each one. All in all I think this game is definitely worth trying, either to soak in the amazing atmosphere or to mess around with the fun betting. Once again, be warned that the Corporate man is as scary as he looks and will put up a fight to the end (or at the very least, he did for me).

When Markiplier played the demo I stopped half way through because I knew this is a game I'd want to play for myself. I won't spoil anything, other than to say I really love the aesthetic and being in this environment. Some games try to hit that PSX or early PC look and don't quite get it right, but they're hitting it perfectly here imo

I don't really want to leave a negative review so early after the game was published but it is painfully slow on repeated attempts and the endings are so easy to get that you loose progress. I will wait for future updates that address my issues but I do see potential with this game and am happy to support it. ____Speed_____ My main issue is speed; animations take way too long and nothing feels snappy. I feel like inscription dose this best with its quick movements and animations were I never feel like I have to wait for the game to make my next move. I feel like the game is purposefully slow paced to get the player to pay attention to the board, but all this dose is make me less carless as my only goal is to get back to were I was ASAP; Once again inscription did this well will difficulty spikes that made you stop and pay attention. The first round is really bad at this were its a boring round with only one chip max bet, a slow pace, and no items. It works well as a tutorial but as the start of each round its quickly degrading. The other thing is the Question answer cutscenes, there long and cant be skipped unless you always pick the ones that don't trigger it. -----Balance---- I feel like RNG is a little to cruel here were your either cruising through the game or your dead. I was never in a bad spot that I could reliably get out of because when your down on chips its much harder to take down the NPC. I don't really have any suggestions on how to fix it but I can say it dose not feel right. The item balancing is really either fine or good or really really bad, like with the item that forces the opponent to loss there turn. That item CAN BE CHAINED and is really punishing, but I found it both annoying and unenjoyable from both sides of the board (using it or having it used on me). I think Buckshot's cuffs are the best way to do it were you cant endlessly chain turn losses it gives more stagy and is also a lot more punishing. Then theirs the item that flips the coin without betting chips, you do not get your turn back and I cant think of situation were this would be useful, once again buckshot's beer did this better. I also want to point out that I do like the extra damage fish head item, its both simple and unique and can help get you out of a bad spot.

This game really surpassed my expectations. At first I thought this was gonna be Buckshot Roulette with a coin, but it has so much character of its own and such a well thought-out atmosphere. The caps system is such a good idea. They’re both your health and what you bet with. The coin game is simple to understand, but once the items and bigger bets start coming in you actually have a lot to think about. It never fully stops being luck, which keeps it tense. The guy across the table is nasty as hell too. At some point I noticed I’d developed a personal beef with the fcker. Then there’s the whole story layer to it. You’re sitting at the bottom of the ocean gambling your life against this evil, mysterious guy while some company somewhere is treating the whole thing like standard procedure. You’re basically thrown down there and left to figure out what the hell is going on. Then the backstory starts unfolding through the dreams, exploring the surroundings and all the strange little things happening around you. The further you get, the wilder everything becomes, almost like the whole place is slowly getting into your head and driving you mad. My favorite thing about it all is the visuals tho. The atmosphere is an experience and all the weird little objects fit the game so well. And it gets weirder as you play Not gonna spoil much, but there’s a lot more going on here than just tossing a coin. Really cool game. Definitely want to go back and see everything I missed.

The price is great. Unfortunately if you're here seeking the vibes of Inscryption or Buckshot Roulette, well... I'm not sure if I can recommend this one. I can praise this incredibly short game for having interesting scenes to interact with between dueling the Old Jerk and the Sea, but it lost me with the Lovecraft. I feel like I'm asking for too much, but I sat there wondering which eldritch deity I'm dealing with, if at all and realized this could be anything. Do I need specifics? Maybe I do. Lovecraft has been expounded upon so there's a lot to pick these days. I just felt like this was random ocean deity and there's a Lovecraft sticker on it to lure in schmucks like me. Or it might just be me being awful and picky and I acknowledge that. Maybe I need to be beaten with a proverbial frying pan here. Surprisingly that's a heavy amount of story in there so applause for what gets done. I still find it a little difficult to follow at times but... flip the coin, it'll be fine. Crunchy graphics to set the mood are nice and I appreciate the aesthetic but it makes it difficult to navigate in some of the scenes. Now and then you may find yourself swimming and you might not know if you're going up or down. This happened to me more than once. It's not a huge problem and you're going to be replaying this game quite a few times so don't worry if that scene plays out poorly because you went down instead of up. It's not a big deal. There's not a lot of replay value, unfortunately. Once you snatch up the other endings, that's it and you can do it within one sitting if you want to. Listen I'm still not sure how I feel about the game. I'm mixed feelings, trending slightly negative. I think there's a niche and I think the price is excellent, especially for the more spooky season. If the price is right and this seems like your niche, it could be worth it.
