I was getting annoyed with the game for a while but tried getting through it out of pure spite. Don't get me wrong the game is not without charm or promise, but it just doesn't work properly. Progression is pretty arbitrary and stops giving you relevant or useful things, at some point it's just unlocking a bunch of nonsense for no real purpose. A lot of system are also fighting themselves or just don't work properly, everything from available space, elevation, path logistics is fighting each other leaving you with no good options to actually deal with the challenges that it presents you with. I don't want to create complicated logic systems to solve traffic jams, that are created through overlapping paths, which i have to build that way because the elevation or space forces me to, but which also don't solve the problem half the time. Not to mention the quality of life things, no i don't want to collect all sparks in an area when i remove logic wiring, why does it even do that? No I don't want to collect logistic sparks when collecting sparks when fighting near a factory. Or when removing a building and a train passes nearby at an awkward angle and now you removed either the train or a compartment of it and need to catch the runaway locomotive that just left behind half it's cargo, and you can't even connect it to the unhooked compartments again without removing them, so now you need to fill your inventory with all the junk that was in there and replace the compartments and transfer the items over again manually. I feel like close to every system in this game is not well implemented and an exercise in frustration rather than an appropriate way to deal with the challenges an automation game gives you. I think that makes it objectively a bad game, no matter how pretty or charming you think it is otherwise.

This game is very charming and I really enjoyed my first 10-15 hours or so, but somewhere in there, it doesn't do enough to mitigate the drudgery, and getting anything done just starts to feel onerous. Which then gets you to a point where you don't want to play anymore, even if you were excited to see more progression. Some examples: - You have to run EVERYWHERE in this game, and the running isn't that quick. However, what starts to get exhausting: -- The ground is cluttered with obstacles. In early areas it's the occasional bush or thick stand of trees, in a later area, entire plateaus you need to traverse and build upon are COVERED in small patches that stop you from running. -- The game uses height on the terrain. Early on this means a slightly annoying slow-climb, but very quickly you start engaging with the "mountain" biome, and this means a ton of annoying up and down traversal. You eventually get a few tools to handle this, but it's still a huge pain to just run from A to B if there are a few canyons inbetween, and did I mention every plateau is covered with obstacles? - The game's equivalent of conveyor belts are "paths" on which your sparks run and carry things. Cool. However, all the obstacles I've mentioned? You can't build paths over them or through them. You have to clear them first. - Ok so you have to clear obstacles, so what? The problem is, this too is tedious. What could have been a system where you drag a box across a whole patch of obstacles, and wait while your sparks clear the whole thing, you instead need micro-manage the removal of each and every obstacle. And once it's removed, you aren't done! You need to make sure you used enough sparks to also pick up all the items, because if you leave some out, when you build your pathway later, the sparks will pick up that item, which will probably "pollute" your "conveyor" and cause issues. At some point I also got exhausted with their insistence on having ALL of the sparks you have equipped and ready, following you around. It becomes a huge amount of visual clutter and noise, often standing on the very things you are trying to interact with. What started as cute in the first hour, when you have 1 type of spark and 1 slot in which to put them, turns into 3 slots, which could be upwards of 30 sparks. Oh, and the combat is annoying: - your mechanics are "throw sparks to do a thing" and "call sparks back". In the first 25 hours, enemies are either: -- trivial: you throw sparks and watch the enemy die, then loot their stuff. -- have obnoxious AOE that will kill all your sparks if you aren't very very careful, which then necessitates running halfway across the map to get more. So the fights with any significant enemy ends up being: ---- throw sparks ---- let them wack on the enemy for a moment ---- oh ♥♥♥♥ it's doing it's aoe attack - return all sparks! ---- ok it's done, throw them all again For the first 5 enemies you do this to, it's a little engaging. But eventually you are doing it to every monster you come across, whether you need it for a quest (5 minutes hitting the same Frowl was probably the straw that broke the camels back for me) or whether it just aggros you while you walk around, and starts killing your sparks. Also maybe some mechanical misses -- I fought the Frowl I just mentioned. One of it's attacks is a big "Inhale" style attack, that will suck in and instakill your sparks. However around that time you get single use exploding sparks. After I spent 3 minutes whittling this guys health down to about half, tediously, it dawned on me to make him swallow an exploding spark! I bet that's the trick! It was not the trick. It did nothing. He swallowed the explodey spark, and it died. No explosion, no burst of damage. The game is adorable, and I greatly respect some interesting ideas they brought to the table in this, but sadly.. it's not fun to play.

Oddsparks is a promising game that unfortunately falls short just when you expect it to get really good. The initial experience is genuinely fantastic. Exploring the world, discovering new Sparks, and figuring out how to put them to work is a lot of fun. There's a wonderful sense of adventure and progression as you uncover new possibilities and slowly build up your little operation. But eventually, that sense of discovery wears off, and what used to be fun starts feeling more like a chore than a game. I've been playing since Early Access, and I was really hoping the developers would add some much-needed meat to the bones. More depth, more meaningful things to discover, and more reasons to keep expanding. Instead, we got loopings and hats... And that's what makes it so disappointing. The foundation is genuinely good, and the original Early Access content had me excited about where the game could go. But once you move past that initial experience and into the added content, the adventure starts turning into busywork. It's a shame, really. There's a lot of fun to be had here, but the further you get, the less rewarding it becomes. What starts as a charming little adventure gradually turns into a checklist of chores. A promising game that desperately needed more depth, not just more things to do.

Some design choices make this less than enjoyable for me. First many factory machines can only be built on specific bases found throughout the map severely limiting your ability to design and build an efficient production line. Second, resources are not well distributed, they are all restricted to specific regions making long distance transport necessary. To add to that the middle of the map is a series of cliffs that are very hard to traverse and offer extremely limited space for building. I prefer a game like satisfactory where you can build where you want, design what you like, and decide for yourself where to set things up. Lastly many of the buildings require non-farmable items that can only be obtained by boss monsters which are a huge pain in the ass.

This is incredibly fun. The controller bindings are surprisingly good for a game this complex.

Just fantastic! I love the automation. It feels like I will never run out of things to do. I basically never have to wait for anything, there is always something else to do in the meantime. THe quest system is a great feature aswell to help with progress.
