I tentatively recommend this game. This game has a lot of good to offer, but there are annoying things too. Things I like: - It's an extraction-game. Get in, get the stuff, and get out; before the forest wakes-up and decides to turn you into fertilizer. - The aesthetics of this game are exemplary. Graphics and sound-design are above the standard for a modern-day game. It is absolutely gorgeous. - The ambience is incredible. It's eerie, haunting, unsettling, and altogether demented. - I can take my time and really soak-up all the effort the designers put into this game. - Sanity, Isolation, Blood-Moon, and other game-mechanics don't have a gauge or progress-bar to keep the player informed. You, as a player, have to be smart enough to realize that if Carlito the Ox is no longer pulling the ox-cart, and instead there is some eldritch-horror pulling the cart, that you might just be going insane. - In-game chat is proximity-based, so if you get too far away from your team, they'll no longer be able to hear you... which means nobody is coming to help when the forest decides to take a "special interest" in you. - I like the fact that every character is the same in terms of speed, strength, endurance, etc. It reminds me a bit of 'Left 4 Dead' where it didn't matter who you were playing as. You end up picking your favorite based on their look instead of their stats. Things I DON'T like: - Any game-controlled allies are frustratingly unhelpful. Most missions include an ox-cart as a mobile inventory-depot, player resurrection, psychological stabilizer, etc. Is the ox-cart going to be where you need it? Of course not. The priest driving the cart is off exploring Narnia as you're desperately trying to stave-off blood-loss, because some cyclopean-terror ripped you a new one and you need a bandage to stop the bleeding (and the bandages are in the cart). Strangely, there is a "Call Cart" command, but there's not one to tell the cart to "Wait Here". If playing single-player, your assistant is just as worthless. The bark of a tree is peeling-off and starting to fight you, and he's carrying an armful of firewood back to the ox-cart (that's half a time-zone away). - Difficulty and progression are very erratic. You can be clear-cutting your way through the jungle on Legendary treasure-missions, then you take-on a Basic portal-mission and the jungle decides to wear you like a condom to get a lot more difficult. - I should NOT have to examine EVERY DAMN ARTIFACT that I pick up. It was nice the first time, but all following times are just preventing me from proceeding at my own pace. Things I understand, but get frustrated with: - There is the occasional graphical or audio glitch. The really-cool proximity-chat is only good if you aren't transmitting garbled static. This is NOT a game-feature where your audio-chat starts getting weird when you are psychologically compromised, it's just a bug that will be fixed in-time. It's already a rare occurrence since the developer continues to release updates every two-weeks. - There were game-mechanics that were removed from the game. There are remnants of those game-mechanics that are still in the game. These remnants should have been repurposed, or removed. Right now they just feel like confusing dead-weight. I hope the developer has future-plans for them (which would explain their continued presence). - Madness effects are really cool the first time you see them, not so much the 25th time you see them. I understand that it takes resources to program and code new effects, so that's why it's in this section instead of "things I don't like". Conclusion If you are a spastic, modern-duty-apex-ring slop-player, who needs a constant flow of adrenaline to keep from falling asleep, you will NOT like this game. But if you're looking for a game that you can immerse yourself in, like a hot-bath of foreboding, you are exactly who this game is talking to (can you hear it whispering?). Overall, I've been enjoying myself quite a bit playing this game. I think it would've been better as an "Early Release" though, until they iron-out all the kinks. I am NOT upset with my purchase, and hope the developer continues to keep releasing updates every two weeks. Hopefully, I'll see you in the jungle... (I'll be the one with the glowing eyes)

As many other people have mentioned: melee feels awful and clunky. It's just a painful experience, but I will try to be specific. Enemies barely recoil when hit. Weapons do not feel impactful. There is a blocking animation, but it does not appear to serve any function. If blocking does reduce damage, it is not commutated clearly. Voice chat is suppose to be a key feature here. However, it's one of the game's biggest weakness. The fall off from proximity voice chat is EXTREME. A player standing one player length away from you will be nearly inaudible. Strangely enough it's not because they sound faint, or far away, they often sound muffled, as if there were a barrier between you and them. These two factors are enough for me to refund the game. If this is suppose to be a horror adventure game with friends, but the adventure and friends part doesn't work, then it's just horror. And while the setting does a lot of heavy lifting and makes me want to play more, the actual game mechanics are so off-putting that I can't go on.

The game looks pretty good in terms of its setting. Unfortunately, the problem with the game runs deeper. The core concept and overall "health" of the game are simply lacking. It has bugs here and there—for example, there’s the “darkness bug” that makes the game display a lot more shadows, or a multiplayer disconnect without the option to rejoin, which forces you to wait until the multiplayer round is over (at which point the AI takes over). Or, it seems that there are no paths to the “forts,” which are an important source of loot. All of this is annoying, but okay. The core problems I’ve noticed in this game are: 1) It feels like you’re always starting over; at the beginning of an expedition, you choose a weapon—but it disappears again after the round. (It doesn’t matter whether you’ve upgraded it—using in-game currency—or not.) 2) There’s no real progression. You earn “coins,” but as in point 1, you can only spend them on upgrades or new items. However, since you don’t keep anything and the weapons are random, these coins are completely useless. After 2–4 rounds, the game just feels generic and repetitive—nothing new happens. It gets boring and monotonous. You go in—loot—escape—look for a new mission, buy new equipment with your old coins—and then the whole cycle starts over. So far, I can only advise against playing this game (a loot simulator with a bit of horror).

Game has amazing atmosphere with great audio and visuals carrying it, and the gameplay is solid with a decent loop that could be engaging if it weren't for this game's main flaw. Which, to me, is a complete lack of any progression narratively or mechanically. You're not at all enticed to keep going back for more or performing well on any level, aside for the novelty of the experience. Which might be enough for some people, but for me and my friend group, we like to also work toward something and feel rewarded for our time. My friend and I did about 6 missions, called it a day, and then didn't touch it for a week because there was no real reason to. Leading to us refunding it. Going through the island's neat, but I'd like my time and effort on it to be compensated to some capacity. The levels mean literally nothing, and the currency just lets you buy temporary upgrades that don't feel very impactful. They've said they're working on a progression system, and I'd be willing to re-buy it if it's done well, but until then I'd rather save my money.

Having finished the main story of the game, I'm left a bit disappointed. The playability issues? Didn't matter. Clunky melee? Didn't matter. Cross-play issues? Didn't matter. Yes, they were ultimately annoying, but me and my friends were having a good enough time that it was the most forgettable part of my experience with this game. Admittedly, we're a bunch of nerd so what we really cared about was level design and lore. That being said, the experience of unlocking the map and lore slowly was really fun. Maybe we're just bad at games, but it really felt like we had to carefully prioritise what we got done each mission up to the point that we discovered The Mound. Once we did though? It felt like what SHOULD have happened is a rise in stakes and difficulty- maybe even in the scary factor, but that's definitely not what happened. It was quite the opposite actually. After the first Tulu Cylinder mission, we acquired them all faster than the time it took for us to complete two Log Book missions. We thought maybe the level design would get more complex, maybe we'd finally feel the need to use the artifacts to complete them but no. It was honestly upsettingly easy. Then came the final mission, entering the mound. It was disappointing enough that we didn't actually have to place the Tulu Cylinders in the pedestals and open the passage ourselves- which had the potential to be actually difficult on top of just being cool af, the mission itself took us 15 minutes. We did it in one try, the level although very cool aesthetically felt empty and dead and on top of everything else left us feeling like there was a lot of build-up then it just dropped off. It wasn't difficult, be that anything to do with enemies or the actual goal of the level and the ending felt... unearned? Don't get me wrong, from a writing perspective? the ending was fine. But because the level design for the last few missions were unsatisfying it just felt like it came out of nowhere. Those missions needed feel high stakes. Maybe they should've been design with each of the artifacts in mind to make them more complex, we definitely should've had a mission dedicated to opening the passage into the mound and the Kn'yan section deserved a whole lot more love than it got. Honestly, it felt incomplete. I genuinely believe that if they revisited those last few levels, this would've my favourite game of the last 2 years. This is my review of the main game. If you don't care about the DLC, that's all you need to read. - The DLC I will concede, the game released on a sale. That's fair enough. As it stands, I wouldn't even pay full price on the main game. That being said I did buy the DLC and will talk about it regardless. It is basically a big room with loads of free treasure. It's a shortcut to loads of tokens, basically. You have it unlocked as soon as you load up the game for the first time and it's just a bunch of re-used assets from the final mission. This in particular upsets me because if me and my friends had played the DLC mission before the final mission of the main game, the final mission would've looked 1000% less cool. I honestly hoped that a whole level dedicated to Yig would've been like a side story that takes us deeper into the forest into a desecrated mayan structure or something. Too bad, ig. Since it has literally 0 story connection, no interesting gameplay and isn't something you have to unlock, I have no real deep feelings about it. Deadass, you could get every single loot piece in that level only needing to fight give or take 3-5 of the mobs if you wanted to.

I have played 18 hours, mostly solo. I love this game. Amazing graphics, atmosphere and story. A unique game, which I am sure will develop in interesting and horrifying ways.
