I played through this three times to get all the achievements. Story-rich with a subtle yet masterful soundtrack that syncs to important events of the game. Each revelation in the plot left me more and more impressed with the story and its characters. 10/10 would play again and am looking forward to playing the DLC.

For a game of mostly dialogue, the writing is pretty bad. Dialogues are full of cliches, characters are incredibly unlikeable, especially the first character you investigate who is just a narcissistic turd. If anything, the game makes a compelling argument FOR a nanny state, because these people all suck. I also have no clue why you have a handler, as all they do is say the most inane, mindless, stupid things whenever you upload a clue. Upload a person's interest in hiking and "Oh, she likes to go outside. Interesting." It's like the most boring person in the world is looking over your shoulder watching you work and commenting. The gameplay is also pretty deceptive. It makes it seem like you can omit information and be subversive, but some information is required to move forward, and you don't know which until the game just stops moving forward. So if you wanted to make someone seem like they aren't a terrorist or are, you can't. Which felt like the whole point of the game? A lot of decisions, like choosing which person's photo is on their dossier, are entirely irrelevant. It's just padding to make it seem like you are doing more than you are. In fact, most of the choices you make aren't choices. The ending also gets to the exact same climax regardless. Also a weird decision to highlight the relevant sections to upload. I was essentially just skimming every document for the highlighted bit and going 'okay, that's the part that matters' and ignoring the rest. I say this as a person that likes to read, but because it hand holds you, you just click on the tab it tells you to click (with a helpful red exclamation mark) then click the text it tells you to click, and if there ever IS a decision, like two conflicting pieces of information that might make someone seem bad, it helpfully tells you not to make a mistake and wait until you get more info to submit that info, basically cutting out the only agency you might have as a player. Good idea, but executed poorly.

Orwell takes an interesting premise and turns the investigatory gameplay into clicking and dragging blue-underlined phrases into a database, or navigating conflicting yellow-underlined “choices.” The music adds some weight to the situation, the story escalates well, and there are real consequences to your actions. While it becomes a little over the top, that is to be expected in a video game. Overall, it was an interesting experience—especially when thinking about the modern surveillance systems we have today, such as databases and Flock cameras. It really made me think about privacy concerns, and how individuals will sacrifice personal freedoms in order to exist in a society. However, there are often bad actors who will use those restrictions to push their own beliefs, frequently using phrases like “children’s safety” while actively restricting freedoms. I still think about the stories surrounding Flock cameras where police officers looked up their ex-girlfriends' locations at different times; if you Google the story, you can find several variations of this happening with guys in San Jose, Kentucky, and Texas. I am not against the idea of being able to go through people’s information when searching for a crime, but there need to be heavy safeguards, or individuals' privacy and freedoms will always be invalidated. This raises the question of who makes those choices, and what is considered a valid reason to override a person’s individual freedoms. The fact of the matter is, I don’t think our society could ever be built on the idea of simultaneously respecting individual freedoms and maintaining public order; however, I still cannot advocate for an organization's ability to rifle through a person’s private information. That being said, it was certainly fun to do so in a video game. While there are some things that could have been improved and I would have liked a bit more content, the game was meant to be a short, contained experience, and it does that job well.

Je me suis vraiment prise au jeu ! C'était très chouette de fouiller un peu partout pour chercher les informations souhaitées, de faire des connections entre personnages, de découvrir petit à petit l'intrigue. C'est un très bon jeu d'enquête.

Fun stuff. Exactly what the game says it is. Sift through peoples e-mail, text messages, etc. to find clues to piece together exactly what happened in a terrorist attack. Solid narrative with multiple endings. Nice art direction and audio. Ran well, no performance issues.
