Parkside: Decayed Soul Manipulation

1 / 8

In PARKSIDE , the future of biomechanical subterfuge and suffering is revealed through the story of Alexander Petrovich, an unemployed hacker who is kidnapped by a mysterious group known as the Illuminated Brethren of Conclave Automata .

Will he bend to the will of the Brethren and aid in realizing their vision for humanity , or will he take the hand of a guardian angel ? Though, no matter his choice, a sinister voice in his head warns that judgement is inevitable .

PARKSIDE is a First Person Shooter / Immersive Simulation, with a focus on freedom, choice, and consequences .

Set in the fictitious city of Abbotsford, California in the year 2038, the world the player experiences is the result of four years of shrouded meddling by the Illuminated Brethren - the environment is cold and unforgiving, the people are drab and demoralized, narcotics and gangs are rife, and military police walk the streets. How has it come to this?

Following his capture by the Brethren , Alexander is interfaced with an experimental combat platform known as POLYPHEMUS . Through a piece of technology called the Remote Combatant Viewer, he is sent to complete illicit, dangerous missions for the Brethren , whose directives come from the mysterious Divine Rod .

Many tools are at the player's disposal to tackle problems including a roster of futuristic weapons, armaments such as EMP grenades and frag mines, and abilities that can be used to navigate all manner of obstacles. You can hack or bypass keypads, security cameras, turrets, and robots... or shoot them to bits - pick your poison and run with it as you navigate smoky streets, dark alleys, airy vents, and secret bases.

Choices matter - in the secret fight for control of the precious lives of all citizens, there are many powerful stakeholders. There is one important question with many answers and outcomes: are you a servant of the Divine Rod, Alexander?

I think the quick pitch would be: "they stuck Cruelty Squad and Deus Ex in a blender." But that does kind of undersell it a bit. It doesn't strictly emulate either of the two, and hits a flavour of its own that I find pleasing 99% of the time. If it has one problem it's somewhat in the Cruelty Squad aspect of the janky, crusty, intentionally ugly graphics. Combined with the more muted and realistic colours than the insane colourfest of Cruelty Squad, it tends towards making enemies fade into the background and making things more easy to miss, and when the game is dark, it's really damn dark. Some parts of the midgame I could not imagine playing through without Nightvision Goggles and a lot of Battery. It also suffers a bit from the classic Rich Get Richer issues as some resources(like medkits) quickly become sparse, and if you didn't stock up and keep most of them unused in the early game, in the mid-late game you can feel strapped for resources. I ended up having a good time despite it, though, since it pushed me towards trying some new strategies... even if it also made me skip a few areas for wishing to not get blown up, and I'm already thinking of them for my next playthrough. Some areas also feel a bit horribly labyrinthine but... in a way it increases the vibe of urban decay and a sick world, so I'm not sure how to feel about it. In short, it's a hideous game with severely lacking game balance on a lot of points and occasionally inscrutable mechanics, but I love it. The jank it has is not the jank of "we got bored and half-assed finishing it" but the jank of "we had a vision and it involved making you feel both powerful and fragile and also you can shoot cops so hard they explode." Really good game, honestly, and I hope more people discover it.

loving it so far! Purchased after seeing the displays of integrity from the developer in review responses. Seems they cares about the state of their game which is rare these days unfortunately. Keep up the great work :)

This game was a great combination of an immersive sim and a Choice and consequence game, I loved the little hidden details, being able to diplomatically deal with thugs by reading emails in abandoned sewers, being able to complete objectives finding them yourself through exploration skipping gameplay segments, non lethal had a great game feel with the combination of invisibility, police baton stun gun and tranq rifle, all though i didnt use it for the catherdral level, you'll understand if you play it. all and all its great! my only caveat is i did like the save system, but i did wish it worked, in a reload time sorta thing incase you accidentally aggro a full level by accident or a out of context thing causes the entire level to agro, i understand why the game doesnt allow it since, the player isnt rewinding time, the divine elxiir is bringing you back to life, i just wish certain actions like smashing a window or killing a junkie in self defense didnt aggro everyone, otherwise the games great!

Thought I was getting some low-poly Deus Ex type clone but instead this game is just a janky ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess. It says theres consequences but nothing I really seem to do matters because either you stealth it, or just blow everyone away. The levels are huge, blocky and frankly all feel confusing or underbaked. I love ImSims like Prey, SS, SS2, Deus Ex, and that one with the blocky cats, but this is....just awful! It reminds me more of Divine Cybermancy which tries to be fun but is instead a huge clunky mess. However, I hope the money can help the dev continue to maybe make another ImSim with skills learned from there.

This is to Deus Ex what Agent 64 is to Golden Eye. Its the most authentic feeling immersive sim I've play since Through The Fragmentation and I highly recommend Also, be sure to have a feck about in the training level

WOW! Just finished my first playthrough (which came in at just under 11 hours). This game is amazing I paticularly like the writing/lore and story the way it reacts to your choices and timulation sandboxhe paths you can take. Spoiler free comment the ending I chose had me floored with the spectacle and implications. I am absolutely going to be doing another couple of playthroughs in the future. On this first run through I did a standard explore as much as possible and just killed everything in sight and only got to explore about 20% of the available powers, there is definitely playstyle and build varience available. If you enjoyed Deus Ex or Thief etc this is a spiritual successor to those games and well worth your time especially for it only being about £12. Lots to explore and find and different paths and gameplay challenges, good music and a cool interesting style

I really enjoy the story and setting this game takes place. It's quite cool the different routes you can take depending on choices, and I love how you slowly discover the Brethren's true goals and motives as time goes on, and how Alexander is affected by them. Also love the soundtrack (Clive Square is one of my favorites!) Great game overall!

This game rules. A lo-fi immersive sim very much in the vein of something like Deus Ex. I've not finished it yet, but am having a great time. It's for sure a game for true immsim sickos and freaks, but it definitely has the juice. A phenomenal achievement from a solo developer to be honest.
