Bought PZ when it first came out in 2019 and own all DLC for it. This is a huge upgrade on PZ. Everything is streamlined to make building and creating simpler. Paths no longer seem like a gigantic chore and I love the Nature Brush tool. As someone who was very detailed with habitats I was sceptical about how it'd work and if it'd be realistic but its exceeded my expectations and is very good. Nature reserves are amazing. I used to build huge habitats in PZ to make it as natural for an animal as possible so seeing this in the game is great for someone like me who dislikes seeing small habitats. Animal behaviour so far is perfect and far more varied. In the reserves, young animals stick close together and run to catch up if left behind while playing together, and when approached too quickly, it can spook some animals and cause them to flee as a group so I love the realism here. There are some bugs which I'm sure will be ironed out in the next few weeks but so far this is a 10/10. I don't usually buy games at full price but this is definitely worth it Edit: Turned off comments due to a lot of idiots being angry I gave it a positive review, only to look on their profile to see they didn't own it and hadn't played it.

I spent 12 hours working on a sandbox zoo yesterday. I was aware of how buggy and unpolished the game is, so I made frequent saves, and even saved manually just to be sure I would cover my bases. Just to be sure. Hopped on the game today and all my save data is gone. The only thing that stayed were the 2 blueprints I uploaded to the workshop. I can excuse the glitches, the lack of polish, the half-baked mechanics, the roster limitations, the terrible performance, the bad animations, and the quality of life features that were lost from the first game. I shouldn't, but I still have faith that these will all be fixed in due time. What I cannot excuse is a game releasing at full price (and not a cheap one) with so many game breaking bugs. Instead of looking past the issues to play the game, I'm having to consider whether or not it's worth putting time into it at all. I was very excited for this game, and when it does work I do have fun. But it feels like I'm having fun in spite of the game, rather than because of it.

I normally don't write reviews this early into buying a game but I wanted to write a review now in hopes later I can rewrite it as a do recommend. Planet Zoo 2 expands on the premise of the first game by adding aquatics and flying birds. This is the real premise of the game- though there's other improvements throughout to make it more than just a title update in my opinion. The new animals are fun to use, the new mechanics work well, and the graphical improvements are insane- you can finally make dark indoor areas, water looks beautiful, the lighting is very nice. Pathing is improved too over the original game, though somehow a step back from Planet Coaster 2's pathing- we'll get to this later. Most unexpectedly to me, exhibit designing is so fun and good it's actually the highlight of the game now in my opinion. You can make them however you want and then set up the animals wherever you want- there's some janky to it (like animals will auto-spawn in silly places, and some of the poses for animals are so specific they're basically useless). I've genuinely spent more time making exhibits in Planet Zoo 2 than full habitats it's that fun. ...And that's about the positives. There's a lot of other good in this game, but part of the problem is fundamentally it is just the first game for better and for worse. The animal collision is still terrible if not actively worse and more confusing in some scenarios. It can make habitat building just as frustrating as the first game- which was the biggest reason I stopped playing. The game is SUPER buggy right now. Not much of it is serious bugs, mind you, but it's lots and lots of little bugs that compound over time. Every time you scroll through the item catalogues, everything's texture resets. The tiny pictures of the items reload every time. When posing Exhibit animals, the posed "ghosts" stay permanently until reload. Pressing escape to close a window does not always work consistently. Staff get stuck on paths and think something is unreachable when it is reachable. Staff teleport to the main gate while actively doing something. I could go on, these are just some of the ones I've run into. The biggest one I've run into is that staff will just vehemently refuse to use paths for literally no reason. They'll be connected on flat terrain to where the staff member is, and they will not go down the path, or better yet, they'll go down the path and get stuck on air, tip-tapping in place. It makes it feel frustrating and uncertain if your neat path layouts will actually work. But the biggest problem with this game right now is lack of content. Sure, there's 130 animals- but half the animals are duplicates of one another and it's not JUST the animals. The building pieces are great, but there's a very limited light selection, very limited plant selection (some continents have literally nothing at all for certain biomes- Australia has no desert plants and there's like 3 South American tropical plants) and most importantly the birds and aquatics specifically have basically nothing in terms of enrichment items, so you're forced to place the same perches over and over and the same suspended bait over and over... This is just one of the things making the game feel incomplete. Certain tags exist with nothing in them, certain items are missing tags, certain items aren't tagged properly, just basic small stuff like this being fixed would be a major boon to this game and I think if the game was more polished, I could maybe excuse the terrible animal roster, but I cannot excuse all this jank and lack of basic content on top of that. I hope to one day update this review to a 'Do Recommend' once they at least make the game less buggy and have meaningful content in meaningful amounts.

Nearly 10 hours in, and I feel like an unpaid beta tester. I wanted to love this game so much, but launching a sequel in this state after 3 years in development is honestly inexcusable. Planet Zoo 1 was amazing, but Planet Zoo 2 feels like a massive step backward in terms of basic polish and usability. Let’s talk about the bugs. I am running this on the highest settings, and yet the engine is so broken that ALL the flowers I place completely lose their flower heads. They are literally just ugly, poorly rendered stalks and leaves because the game's asset rendering is panicking under the hood. The animal pathing is totally busted too—primates are constantly clipping straight through trees and climbing structures. Worse than the bugs is the new UI. It is terrible compared to the first game. The menus feel like they were lazily copied from a console interface. The asset icons in the foliage and build menus are so tiny, washed out, and low-res that you can barely even tell what item you are looking at until you place it on the ground. Frontier clearly rushed this out the door to meet a corporate deadline, splitting their focus to launch on PC and consoles at the same time. The result is a game that feels completely unpolished. For a full-price sequel from an established studio, we shouldn't have to wait months for patches just to make flowers render and menus readable. As it is right now after launching I would not recommend it and say Don't buy it yet even as an avid planet zoo fan. Wait 6 months for them to actually finish making the game and have it be worth the full price.

Unfinished game with devastating bugs. Not just talking about clipping or weird pathing here - the game will make you go to extreme lengths to unlock and purchase new animals in franchise, just to delete them when you save. Seriously, it deleted every single one of my habitat animals. Even my newborn babies! Feeling so defeated, why keep trying to collect and breed them if they're just going to vanish?

As a player that has been playing this series since the first game during the closed beta back in 2019, this sequel is amazing and a huge step up from the first game. First thing first, the game runs buttery smooth on my RTX 5080, literal no stutters or issues at all. The main selling point with this game is the newly inclusion of fully flying birds and aquariums. We begged for YEARS (since 2019 when the first game released) for this, and they completely blew my expectations out the water. The animations for each animal are amazing, the water effects and weather are amazing as well. This game is much easier to get into for new players, I know with the first game a lot people said it was very confusing to get a hold of controls, I never had that problem but I could see where people were coming from. The only complain I have with this game is the animal roster, now it is not bad by any means, but some animals were cut from the first game, iconic animals that literally are staples for being in zoo games, an example I can give is that they cut the cheetah, why?, I have no idea, literally an iconic animal in zoo games. My hope is that they add missing species that were in the first game via free monthly updates like they do for Jurassic World Evolution 3. PLEASE do not make us pay for animals that were in the base game of the first. This game is off to a strong start and I can't wait to see what is in store for the DLC.

TL;DR: Planet Zoo 2 feels more like a QoL update to the original game than a true sequel. Many habitat walls, character models, music tracks, and scenery items have been carried over with little to no change. While the game introduces quality-of-life improvements, updated animal models, better graphics, aviaries, and aquariums, I expected a lot more new content for a $50 sequel. I'm enjoying my time with Planet Zoo 2, but I can't shake the feeling that I've played this game before. Performance has been great so far, and the game does look slightly better than its predecessor. The quality-of-life improvements are welcome, the updated animal models are nice to see, and the addition of aviaries and aquariums is easily one of the biggest selling points. However, once you get past those improvements, a lot of the experience feels almost identical to the original. One of my biggest disappointments is just how much content has been carried over. The music, which I eventually had to turn off in the original game because it became so repetitive, is largely the same, with perhaps a few new tracks sprinkled in. I also expected to see new habitat wall textures, but many of them are still identical to the first game. The same goes for a lot of the scenery items, although there are plenty of additional pieces to work with. Don't get me wrong, having more scenery options and new features is great, but I expected a sequel to offer more substantial changes to the overall experience. Instead, it feels like a collection of improvements and additions that could have been released as a major update or expansion for the original game. My biggest issue is the $50 price tag. For that amount of money, I expected significantly more new content and visual variety to distinguish this game from its predecessor. That concern becomes even more frustrating when you consider that the DLC for these games can get expensive. It's hard to justify the price when so much of the experience feels recycled, even if the improvements themselves are genuinely good. Ultimately, I'm stuck somewhere in the middle with Planet Zoo 2. I like the improvements, I appreciate the updated graphics and animal models, and I'm excited about the possibilities that aviaries and aquariums bring to the game. At the same time, I can't help feeling disappointed by how familiar everything else is. Planet Zoo 2 isn't a bad game by any means. In fact, I'm having fun with it. I just expected a lot more from a full-priced sequel. If you're new to the series, you'll probably have a great time. However, if you've already put dozens or hundreds of hours into the original Planet Zoo, you might find yourself wondering whether the new features are worth the price of admission. For me, the lack of substantial new content makes it difficult to give this game a wholehearted recommendation.
