Wow! What an inventive and imaginative game! It's got great platforming and you will never be bored with all of the new mechanics the developers throw at you. It's got all of the qualities of a triple A title, don't miss this one, it's AWESOME!

Promenade is a charming 2D platforming adventure built around exploration, creative movement, puzzle solving, and the satisfying pursuit of collectibles. Developed and published by Holy Cap, it takes many of the ideas commonly associated with classic collectathon platformers and adapts them to a side-scrolling format. Instead of pushing players through a rigid sequence of stages, the game encourages curiosity and gives them room to decide where to explore and which challenges to complete. Its colorful presentation initially makes the adventure appear simple and relaxed, but underneath that welcoming exterior is a surprisingly thoughtful platformer with plenty of mechanical depth. The adventure centers on repairing a massive elevator by collecting golden cogs scattered throughout the world. These cogs serve as the main form of progression, allowing the elevator to reach additional locations as enough are recovered. Individual cog fragments are earned through exploration, puzzles, platforming challenges, hidden discoveries, races, and other activities. The clever part of this structure is that players generally have more opportunities available than are strictly necessary for advancement. Getting stuck on one particularly troublesome challenge does not always mean progression comes to a halt, since another cog can often be found somewhere else. The protagonist's unusual companion is responsible for much of the game's personality and mechanical creativity. This small octopus-like creature can be thrown outward to grab objects and certain enemies, turning the environment itself into a collection of potential tools. Captured objects can affect movement in different ways, creating opportunities to reach distant platforms, cross hazards, or solve environmental puzzles. Throwing a held object downward while airborne can provide additional height, while particular objects offer more specialized abilities. Chickens can assist with gliding, for example, while rockets can dramatically increase movement speed. What makes this system enjoyable is how naturally it connects exploration with experimentation. The player is frequently encouraged to consider what nearby objects might accomplish rather than simply looking for the next obvious platform. New situations build upon familiar mechanics without constantly burying the experience beneath complicated controls. Learning how different objects interact with movement becomes an important part of navigating the world, and discovering an unexpected use for something can be just as satisfying as finding a hidden collectible. Promenade also benefits greatly from variety. One moment may involve searching an environment for a concealed cog fragment, while another introduces a race, dungeon, environmental puzzle, demanding traversal sequence, or boss encounter. The game regularly changes its immediate objectives without abandoning the central mechanics that hold everything together. This prevents the collectible hunt from becoming a repetitive checklist. Even when the ultimate reward is another piece of a golden cog, the method required to obtain it can be substantially different from the previous challenge. Exploration is especially rewarding because the environments invite players to investigate unusual details. Suspicious pathways and apparently unreachable locations often conceal something worthwhile. Each major area introduces its own visual personality and gameplay ideas, making progress through the elevator feel like more than simply moving to a harder version of the previous stage. The cheerful artwork, expressive animation, imaginative creatures, and whimsical environments reinforce a playful atmosphere that complements the exploratory structure extremely well. Difficulty is handled intelligently. The game can be approachable for players who simply want to explore and gather enough cogs to continue, yet it provides more demanding objectives for completionists. Some puzzles require careful observation, while certain platforming sequences test precision and understanding of the companion mechanics. Because not every challenge needs to be completed immediately, frustration is reduced without removing the satisfaction of overcoming harder obstacles. Players interested in mastering movement can also discover considerable depth in using objects efficiently and maintaining momentum. Combat is present but does not dominate the experience. Encounters generally support the broader emphasis on movement and environmental interaction rather than transforming the game into an action-heavy platformer. Boss encounters add larger challenges at appropriate moments, while ordinary enemies can sometimes become useful components of traversal or puzzle solving. This integration helps the companion mechanic remain relevant across different aspects of gameplay instead of functioning as a gimmick used only for one purpose. There are a few considerations for prospective players. Anyone who fundamentally dislikes collecting objects or repeatedly searching environments may not connect with the core progression loop. Some optional challenges can also be noticeably tougher than the game's cheerful appearance suggests. Furthermore, the constant introduction of new ideas means certain mechanics are not explored as extensively as they might be in a more narrowly focused platformer. Nevertheless, the steady stream of new concepts is a major reason the adventure remains lively. Steam Deck compatibility is excellent because Promenade is Steam Deck Verified. Its controller-oriented platforming translates naturally to handheld play, the interface remains suitable for the smaller display, and the game is designed to function properly with the Deck's controls and default configuration. Its structure is also convenient for portable gaming, since players can make meaningful progress by collecting a few cog fragments during a shorter session while still having enough content for extended play. Promenade ultimately stands out by combining the freedom and collectible-driven satisfaction of traditional collectathons with carefully designed 2D platforming. Its companion mechanic gives traversal a distinctive identity, while the flexible progression system rewards exploration without demanding that every obstacle be conquered immediately. Strong visual personality, varied challenges, clever puzzles, secrets, bosses, and enjoyable movement make the journey consistently engaging. It is particularly easy to recommend to players who enjoy platformers that reward curiosity and experimentation rather than simply testing reflexes from beginning to end. Rating: 9/10

A 2D Mario Odyssey, and a really impressive one. It's really fun to explore the world and collect all the gears (stars). The only downside I can think of is that it requires a fair amount of platforming skill, especially if you want to complete all the extra content. Reviewed by Detotated Gamer
