Proteus

1 / 8

Proteus is a game about exploration and immersion in a dream-like island world where the soundtrack to your play is created by your surroundings. Played in first-person, the primary means of interaction is simply your presence in the world and how you observe it. The procedurally generated islands are home to creatures natural and imagined, tranquil valleys and ruins with magical properties. Key Features:

Meditative play: the responsive world and lack of any text or hints distils an essence of curious, investigative play, and rewards patience and immersion.

Dynamic soundtrack composed by award-winning musician David Kanaga follows the mood of the world and will appeal to fans of Boards of Canada, Brian Eno.

A distinctive 2D-but-3D graphical style with wild shifting palettes that sits somewhere between 8-bit videogames and early 20th century modernist painting.

Islands are uniquely generated every time, and although it's theoretically possible to see everything in one playthrough, no-one ever does.

Built-in "postcard" function encodes world data into each screenshot, allowing islands and discoveries to be saved and shared.

Meditative exploration game that doesn't hold your hand and puts you into a Zen-like flow state. To be played when you're in the right frame of mind.

Played at launch on ps3/vita, playing right now on an old crt and it's beautiful. Is the game barebones? yeah, If you hate walking sims avoid for sure. That being said the ost is not only great but extremely dynamic(more so than any game I can think of) the visuals are minimalistic yet timelessly nostalgic, there's so many little events to see and it's just extremely chill. It's not the ultimate game but if I had to argue video games as an artform I'd probably bring up proteus and that's probably the most succinct way I can explain how I feel about this game...

This game is the love of my life. It is a parabel on life itself. It starts in spring and lets you discover everything. Everything is fresh and new, you discover lifeforms and beauty. At some point, whenever you like, you switch to summer. Everything is even more alive and beautiful and full of energy. At some point, whenever you like, you switch to autumn. Life is receeding, but you will find a quiet beauty in it, which is even more magical, but also fading. At some point, whenever you like, you switch to winter and there is pracically no sound, everything is frozen, you are at the end of life and eventually are forced to let go of everything and get lifted up into the beautiful lightshow of aurora borealis. And such is life (I hope it ends in a similar fashion, but who knows?) It is a one of a kind game, which isn't really a game but a beautiful, funny, melancholic and ultimately peaceful expierience.

It's a nice experience I go through whenever I get a new gaming PC, the aurora borealis in winter is especially pretty
