Quarantine Zone: The Last Check
Quarantine Zone: The Last Check

The game is fun but then you have to eliminate waves of zombies with a drone. It breaks the immersion of the game. I found that part of the game not fun.

Well this inspection part of this game is nice but there is way too much nonsense happening around the core idea. And apart from the inspections, rest of this game is not enjoyable at all. Also wtf are those timelimits in body inspections? This is almost like an zone check simulator but completely destroyed with arcade stylish game mechanics and tasks. I really don't understand why devs wanted to smash 3-4 different games into one game without an option for the player to tailor the gameplay to fit his preference. Please fix. You have great core game but you are torturing players with hardly related nonsense

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 663: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆ (6/10) Quarantine Zone: The Last Check ("QZ") ain't Papers, Please, nor is it even Contraband Police. But it is a casual, fun, well-paced checkpoint simulation with plenty of tools to fiddle around with. (And it runs pretty well on Steam Deck!) Sure, the base-building is on the easy side, the tower defense aspect is a bit puzzling, and the voice lines and character appearances repeat, but I had a solid ~10 hours of fun (ignore the weird playtime). I was ready to give the game an 8/10 except ... the more I played, the more I noticed something. Bugs and glitches slowly crept in. 🤔 Little things, like characters getting stuck or rats glitching out, which I could ignore. But for some reason, whenever I switched to the X-ray scanner—a tool you're given—I got softlocked because I couldn't interact with anything. The game refused to recognize any buttons I pressed, even though I could still use my joysticks to move around. Most bugs are solved by restarting the day, but that removes your progress. Still, I pushed through until this soft-locking issue happened randomly again for a second time—then a third time. As you progress through the game, the days get more complex and longer, so I got too frustrated to continue at Day 21. Pros: ✅ Wide variety of tools. Let's see, you get a Scanner, UV Light, Thermopulsometer, Reflex Hammer, X-ray, Matteoscope, and, of course, a pistol. Each tool will have 3-5 symptoms you're required to classify, as well as about a dozen facial or bodily deformities you can spot. And even one symptom can be a sign of a zombie! ✅ Good pacing and difficulty. I liked how the game gradually introduced new rules, tools, and complications instead of dumping everything on you at once. The first few days are pretty simple, but things slowly get more involved as you learn the ropes. By the later days, there's a lot more to keep track of, but I never felt like the game was deliberately screwing me over. (Well, except for the bugs.) ✅ Runs well on Steam Deck. I played most of QZ on Steam Deck and, thankfully, had no real performance complaints. I got about 30 FPS with a mixture of Medium to High settings. ✅ Playing judge, jury, and executioner. Look, there's something really fun about being the person who gets to decide who does and doesn't get through the checkpoint. I must admit I get a little sadistic thrill going "Quarantine! Liquidation! Lab! Survivor!" whilst people are begging me for their freedom. Hell, I'll shoot the poor bastard myself. Sure, sometimes it's obvious who's shady, but other times you actually have to pay attention and make a judgment call. It's a simple premise, but it's satisfying! ✅ Good length. I got around 10 hours out of QZ, which felt like a pretty good amount of time for the game. There's enough here for the checkpoint mechanics to get progressively more complicated without the game dragging on forever. Honestly, I probably would've been pretty happy with the length if I hadn't stopped at Day 21 because of the bugs. Mixed: 🟨 Base-building. The base-building is a nice idea in theory, but it's very simple compared to the checkpoint gameplay. You can spend resources on various helpful upgrades and improvements, such as being able to Quarantine a larger number of prisoners—er, people—or your Checkpoint alerting you to contraband. But honestly, it mostly feels like a secondary progression system rather than a substantial part of the game. I never worried about money, thanks to the QZ giving you a generous salary for doing your job, and I didn't mind having it, but I also never found myself particularly excited to return to it. 🟨 Tower defense mini-game. This was a bit of a strange addition. I don't necessarily mind the idea of having something that breaks up the checkpoint gameplay every so often, but having to fight off two waves of zombies with missiles, bombs, machine guns, a drone, and an RPG was a bit immersion-breaking, I must admit. Cons: 🟥 🐛🐛🐛. As I said, I had some weird bugs and eventual soft locks. Characters would fall to the ground and not get back up when hit (a gunshot to the temple would solve this). The scanner wouldn't work until I stepped back, then forward. Rats would clump together, scurry on the floor, before glitching out, jerking to a complete stop. And, of course, the softlock mentioned. 🟥 Some reused assets. Not a huge issue on its own, but character appearances and voice lines repeat frequently enough that it becomes more noticeable the longer you play. I want to recommend this game, but it just falls short in too many areas. Great concept, but it needs a lot more polishing that doesn't seem to be coming. Bugs and can feel a bit repetitive, like it's missing some character building and backstory. The upgrade options just feel lackluster. It takes itself too serious where I think some well-placed comedic aspects would make it feel more well-rounded.

This game fr had so much more potential, but instead, the devs just kept adding more and more streamers to it, which honestly made things worse. The game could’ve been so much more, but once the initial hype died down, it felt like the devs decided they had already made enough money and stopped putting real effort into it. Now, all we seem to get are occasional stability updates here and there.

OK, so I played 9 hours so far. I think the game is great for what it is aiming to be, BUT got one issue, I think, devs should fix OR explain better: So, after after inventing UV light in my checkpoint, Mr. Stuart walks into my check point... with a zombie head in his bag... I listen to his BS story and do the inspection (normally, the human parts in bags is a big NO NO - means he is infected - straight to liquidation, not to mention, he has bear UV marked bottles - also infected). I finish my check and assign him to zombie liquidation room... get +9 for excellent inspection, BUT then I get -1000 fine for unnecessary civilian death... HOW? WHY? This make no sense... if this is a 'realistic' game - rules apply, if this is fantasy, maybe the zombie parts puzzle is ok... but player can not understand when these special circumstances are present... this needs some dev attention. Regarding the bugs mentioned in other reviews - did not encounter them so far (maybe a button not reacting to mouse pointer couple of times)... Saw a zombie in base once, but I believe it was because I tried to put another one in the cage while it was occupied. Also, maybe needs some optimisation or memory clearing as after running long the game starts to stagger a little - hard to use machine gun on the drone :)

Great concept, good core mechanics, but it's the secondary mechanics that bog this game down. If this is on sale, get it, you can ignore the jank and have a good time. However at full price, you're dealing with some very sloppy and careless dev work. You can tell they put a lot of effort and thought into the core mechanics around detection, but then just phoned it on quests. So many quests are just vaguely worded, or don't trigger, or don't work right. It's a joke. The game would be just fine if they removed all the quests that suck. The game also peters out towards the end and you're just going through the motions until the clock runs out. Also, the rubric for how well you checked a survivor is probably bugged. Sometimes you'll get excellent, sometimes you'll do terribly, even though you've checked for every symptom you can think of. It's incredibly frustrating to get 'poor inspection' when you've done every possible test you can think of, including the UV light, and perplexing when you were lazy and got 'excellent inspection'. During evacuation, the game will tell you that an NPC has a related side quest (and thus, you shouldn't evacuate them). However, most of the quests never happen, and after you complete them, it still tells you that they have a related side quest. You accumulate these people over time to the point where a good amount of your base is just NPCs you're not supposed to evacuate for no reason. If you do decide to evacuate the ones that never give you a quest, nothing bad happens. Also about 40% of the NPCs during evacuations are invisible for some reason. Just sloppy sloppy work here. If this were my game, I wouldn't put my name on it, cause I take pride in my work as a programmer. The severe lack of care and polish is really disappointing because at its CORE it's an excellent game, but it appears somewhere along the way in development the devs stopped giving a ♥♥♥♥ about doing good work and just phoned it in.
