Randomice

Randomice delivers a refreshing interpretation of the Metroidvania formula by combining puzzle-platforming, randomized exploration, and an amusing miniature adventure. Developed by Videoludid and published by Abiding Bridge, the game places players in control of a resourceful mouse attempting to escape a mysterious laboratory hidden inside an ordinary house. What initially appears to be a straightforward escape mission gradually develops into an unpredictable experiment where equipment, objectives, and exploration routes can change between attempts. Rather than relying on traditional linear progression, the experience encourages creativity, adaptability, and curiosity, making every successful discovery feel like an accomplishment. The story revolves around a mouse repeatedly finding itself trapped inside a laboratory cage despite seemingly escaping its surroundings. Another mouse named Kimo discovers a remote control capable of modifying the experiment, introducing the randomized mechanics that define the adventure. This narrative explanation gives the gameplay an entertaining sense of purpose instead of making its unpredictable structure feel arbitrary. The storytelling remains relatively lighthearted, with humorous interactions and an underlying mystery providing motivation to continue. Although players seeking an emotionally complex narrative may find the plot relatively simple, its playful presentation fits the overall experience remarkably well. The central gameplay mechanic revolves around discovering equipment scattered throughout interconnected household environments. Unlike conventional Metroidvania adventures, where upgrades typically occupy predetermined locations, Randomice rearranges important discoveries to create different progression possibilities. Players must carefully examine their surroundings, identify accessible routes, and determine how their available abilities can overcome environmental obstacles. This approach rewards experimentation rather than memorization, allowing unexpected combinations of equipment to influence exploration. The randomization is designed to maintain achievable progression, although certain arrangements may naturally require more backtracking than others. The environment features fourteen rooms filled with oversized household objects that become elaborate obstacles from the perspective of a tiny mouse. Wooden furniture, metallic surfaces, and ordinary domestic structures provide opportunities for creative platforming. Fourteen upgrades expand the protagonist's movement capabilities, including push pins for climbing wooden surfaces, a magnetic grapple for interacting with metal, and a rocket for enhanced traversal. Discovering these tools creates a satisfying sense of advancement because previously inaccessible locations suddenly become possible to explore. The strongest moments occur when players recognize an unconventional solution using equipment they already possess, reinforcing the game's emphasis on problem-solving. Beyond ordinary exploration, the adventure introduces increasingly elaborate experimental modifications. Room arrangements, character locations, and quest requirements can change, forcing players to reconsider familiar routes and objectives. Twenty characters provide quests that encourage interaction with the environment and add variety beyond collecting upgrades. The gradual introduction of these mechanics makes the experience approachable for newcomers unfamiliar with randomized adventures. Helpful hints from Vyna also reduce unnecessary confusion. However, players who prefer clearly marked objectives and predictable progression may occasionally find the changing conditions frustrating, particularly when important discoveries require revisiting previously explored locations. Randomice benefits considerably from its charming hand-drawn presentation. The colorful environments transform familiar household spaces into imaginative playgrounds, while the expressive characters give the adventure a friendly personality. Its visual direction prioritizes readability and character over technical spectacle, allowing interactive objects and environmental details to remain recognizable. The soundtrack, featuring music performed largely with real instruments, complements the whimsical atmosphere and helps maintain an inviting tone throughout exploration. Although the relatively compact setting may eventually become familiar, its appealing artistic identity makes repeated visits enjoyable. The game also offers meaningful replay value through its randomized structure and additional challenges. Its campaign is estimated to provide approximately ten hours of gameplay, depending on individual exploration habits and puzzle-solving ability. Twelve base challenges, additional monthly challenges, and fifty Steam achievements offer further incentives to revisit the experience. Different equipment placements and modified objectives encourage alternative strategies, although repeated exploration of the same environments may eventually expose the limitations of its modest scale. Players who enjoy mastering movement systems and discovering efficient routes are likely to appreciate this design more than those seeking an enormous world filled with constant surprises. One particularly appealing aspect is its suitability for portable gaming. Randomice is officially Steam Deck Verified, meaning Valve has confirmed that the game works properly with the handheld's default controller configuration, displays readable interface text, and performs well using its default graphics settings. Its modest hardware requirements and exploration-focused gameplay make it especially appropriate for shorter handheld sessions. Steam Cloud support also provides additional convenience for players switching between compatible devices. Despite its strengths, the game is not without limitations. Randomized progression can occasionally interrupt the natural rhythm of exploration, especially when useful upgrades appear in inconvenient locations. Its relatively small collection of rooms may also become repetitive during extended playthroughs, while the emphasis on navigation and puzzles might disappoint players expecting substantial combat encounters. Nevertheless, these shortcomings are outweighed by its inventive progression system, approachable difficulty structure, and consistently charming atmosphere. Randomice stands out as a thoughtful indie adventure that successfully transforms unpredictability into its greatest strength. Its combination of creative movement abilities, entertaining characters, randomized objectives, and accessible Metroidvania mechanics provides a distinctive experience that rewards curiosity and experimentation. Although its limited environmental variety and occasional backtracking prevent it from reaching perfection, it remains an enjoyable recommendation for puzzle-platforming enthusiasts and players seeking something different from conventional exploration games. A delightful and imaginative randomized Metroidvania with engaging exploration, clever traversal mechanics, excellent replay potential, and officially Verified Steam Deck compatibility. Rating: 9/10

I'm a metroidvania enjoyer and this feels like distillation of the genre's essence. It's also cozy and charming.

This is a really fun game for the first couple hours or so. The art, audio, and gameplay are great and it feels like you're making genuine progress. The puzzle solving mixed with platforming is super enjoyable. Then it gets REALLY repetitive as the gameplay is tweaked just enough so that you aren't good at it anymore. Overall enjoyable but not enough content for the long term.

It's a great game for getting a sense of what running a randomizer feels like! It starts easy but slowly ramps up in complexity, mixing up more and more stuff as you learn how to navigate the house and what to expect from each NPC. The movement is also very smooth and satisfying, and the writing often made me chuckle. There's more content than I thought and I'm not even done with the optional challenges yet!
