TLDR (Full review further down) A mediocre experience that never really hits the mark in terms of both gameplay and story. Raid mode is a nice addition to the series, but not if you value your time or don't want to engage in a grind heavy environment. Do not come into this for a 100% without doing proper research or you'll regret it. Full Review Resident Evil Revelations has been a rough experience. It tries new things compared to other entries in the franchise but a lot of it just completely misses the mark. The story was very lackluster and poorly throughout. The gameplay is another mixed back as it introduces things like dodging but with no way to rebind the feature. If you're a completionist, a lot of your time will unfortunately be grinding Raid mode. It's not a bad mode but the grind itself will leave you pulling your hairs out. Out of all of the RE games, this is so far my least favorite due a multitude of factors. Story The most disappointing thing about Revelations is the story. Making my way through the entire Storyline of Resident Evil in chronological order, Revelations some how manages to not properly introduce us to the story. Right off the bat you're introduced to Parker but without any explanation of who he is, how he's with us, etc. In the beginning our main goal is to look for Chris Refield who turns out to not even be on the ship we just boarded. We end up having to play this entire campaign on this ship which quickly loses its shine. Sometime later in the story Chris Redfield ends up looking for us which makes the entire former half of the campaign feel like a waste of time. There's also some plot twists that happen that are completely expected with no real effort to properly build up to these plot devices. By the end of the story, I was so uninterested with the only thing keeping me going is that it contextualizes what happens before the events of RE 5. A quick warning: If you accidentally click a mouse button or a key during a cutscene, the game will skip it instantly without warning. This was extremely frustrating, as there is no way to rewatch them without reloading a previous save. Do not press Escape in an attempt to pause; it took me a while to break that habit coming from other RE games. Some parts of the story feature flashback missions that give appreciated context to the characters. However, the difficulty balancing in these missions left me on the verge of quitting the game entirely. The balancing here feels completely off, which is heavily exacerbated on higher difficulties where enemies become massive bullet sponges you aren't even intended to fight. Higher difficulties inject tougher enemies into areas in large amounts; at times, it felt like straight-up poor design to have 9+ enemies blocking your path on a narrow staircase. To put it bluntly, the story lacks the high stakes or emotionally captivating moments of previous entries. I did, however, appreciate the significant lore implications that I am excited to see play out in RE 5. Gameplay Gameplay is decent and for the most part it's what you can expect from a RE title. Despite this, there's a couple things that significantly holds it back that adds a level of jank you'll have to deal with for the entirety of your time with this game. For starters we're quickly introduced to something called the Genesis Scanner, an item that allows us to (you gussed it) scan enemies. This entire item and system feels like it was created for the sole purpose of slowing me down and constantly stop in areas I'd otherwise quickly walk through. The scanner is tied behind multiple achievements, gear progression, and just feels completely janky to use. Using it requires to zoom in with a first person sci fi esque scope that just doesn't fit the game at all. If you use it in an uncleared room, you completely lose the ability to see if enemies spawn near you due to its tight FOV. My biggest issue with the gameplay resides with the dodge mechanic. I love this mechanic and its addition in the franchise. Unfortunately the way to activate this is by either pressing forward (W on keyboard, up on left stick via gamepad) or with the turn around key which is spacebar on PC and L stick down + A/X on gamepad. All fine and dandy til you realize that the only way to actuallly dodge is by first, stand completely still and then press & hold the required button. It seems that it doesn't work most of the time, especially if you're in the midst of running away from an enemy. This can apparently be cheesed on gamepad but as a KBM user, not possible. Raid Mode Raid Mode is in a literal sense, a roguelite mode for RE. There's meta progression currency, gear you can obtain via drops or currency, stages that you can grind, and multiple difficulties to play through. I actually really enjoyed this a lot and it was a nice reward for beating the campaign. As a game mode, it feels pretty well balanced and completely playable solo (up until I unlocked the next difficulty). Usually I'd leave the section at that but there's one massive caveat about this mode that left me feeling more frustrated than anything else. In order to achieve 100% achievement completion in this game you have to engage with mode. Unfortunately this means you have to grind many hours which at times is for just a single achievement at a time. Some of these achievements puts you in the hands of RNG and there's no real way to improve such luck here. Circling back to the game's balancing, almost every single stage you complete does not reward you with enough EXP to level up to be strong enough for the next stage. This means you have to rerun a previous stage five to fifteen times depending on what level you are. This completely bricks your progression till you level up which means even more time until you can unlock that next achievement. For this aspect alone, I recommend to not attempt to play this for the 100% unless you fully understand what you're walking into. Difficulty In every RE game I've played so far, higher difficulty simply meant bullet sponge enemies, and more enemies. Revelations is exactly that but with janky dodge mechanics that this game is seemingly balanced towards, a lot of encounters on Inferno are nearly unbeatable. As I've stated previously, there are instances where you're in a narrow hallway or small room and the game just puts a ton of enemies around you. In higher difficulties these spawns change, some enemies are intentionally made to spawn behind you. A lot of this felt extremely distasteful and as if it was made simply to infuriate anyone attempting such difficulty. Capcom really needs to change how they approach difficulties because 'this ain't it fam'. Verdict: C One of the most lackluster experiences of the franchise that's held back by janky mechanics, poor balancing, and egregious grinds made to simply waste your time. I only recommend if you aren't attempting to 100% & for the campaign's lore. Good close quarters combat, good story, graphics are decent, raid mode is good for solo play. Weapon upgrades are real nice too, they increase replay value. Recommended if you like Resident Evil games. But if you are new to the franchise, then you should try the main games first.

Despite consistent bugs with the scroll wheel and inconsistent dodge mechanics this game was aesthetically incredible. It's definitely on the spookier side too especially for those first couple minutes on the ship. Definitely one of the more underrated Resident Evil games!
