Despite (severe) performance issues due to the engine, this one has a particular flavour and sauce to it that a lot of the modern titles since Total War Rome II lack. It iterated very well on its predecessor, Total War: Rome II, with genuinely fun and interesting touches to the formula set out in the previous game. I feel it is one of the few titles that did so without bloating the gameplay with features that ultimately are neglible, like in Thrones of Britannia, Troy, and Pharaoh. Because despite those titles' strong aesthetic identity, the games themselves feel interchangeable, where Atilla feels like a great last hurrah in terms of creativity and design vision, before the first Total War: Warhammer essentially defined what would be a Total War game for every game after. It's good. And if you like Total War, it's absolutely worth playing. It can be rough in places, and it is unfortunately still an interation on the Total War: Rome II template, but it is genuinely good. It has a distinct identity and can confidently sit at the table, next to the likes of Shogun II and the first Rome: Total War.

So, you have grown up a bit and realize that Total War: Rome 2 creates an overly idealistic image of the Romans, and that it was too easy to stomp everyone as Rome? Good, I'm talking to an adult... You have come to the right place... This is an age of mud, struggle and tension. Both sides of the Roman empire are on the verge of crisis, the oppressed barbarian nations are seeking revenge and survival, and a huge migration is taking place for thousands of people desperately trying to escape the huns. You are about to be plunged into a time of great chaotic change. Its a game that rewards roleplay on your behalf. Example; As western Roman emperor you are forever putting out fires, making deals with deeply unpleasent Barbarian leaders just to try to survive to seaon, the threadbare budget and food supply will occupy your thoughts. Exterminating the barbarians never quite quenches revenge as you have too many fronts to hold and you end up relishing causing catastrophic casualties to the enemy despite being defeated. Rebellions and attempted coups are frequent, and honestly I could not blame the people - the empire is a mess and they are understandably desperate. The lack of praise for your victories feels right for the time - you don't get rewarded for doing the bare minimum. It truely feels like you are trying to save a dying empire. Maybe you want to revive the Celtic religeon? Create a giant Viking empire? Migrate your poor opressed people to sunny spain? Or maybe you just want to burn the decadent old world so your hordes and livestock can grave upon their fertile charred lands? The choice is yours and I encourage trying to put yourself into your leaders shoes. Aside from the Sassanids, every faction will have a serious struggle to come out on top. Flanking, feints and skirmishing is essential, and by god you will become an expert in defence. Each economy is its own puzzle that requires constant tweaking, and the loss of a single province can badly hurt. Political dynasty management can make or break you. Your thirst for technology and civil reforms will be huge. Even if you can handle all of that and forge a powerful empire, you will never be quite ready for Atilla. His hordes are relentless and his armies will seriously test you. This game will make you a better strategist, and help you learn a good loss is better than a hollow victory. Honestly, if you manage to create a stable and big empire in this game, it does feel like your name should be in the history books. Why did this game not sell? If I had to guess, its far more grungey and not as sexy as Rome 2. If the game arrived after Dark Souls, it would be praised for its punishing difficulty. If you are a history fan, you owe it to yourself to explore the dark and desperate side of the Roman empire. Graphics are decent for 2026, the bugs are fixiable via mods, and the AI is decent. The price is excellent too when it comes to sale periods. 9.4 out of 10 - you just wish that Creative Assembly had given it more love and implemented even more factions. God I would love a breakaway Roman state to play as.

"Total War: Attila" is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and immersive titles in the series. Unlike other entries that focus on expansion, this game forces you into a desperate struggle for survival during the collapse of the Roman Empire. The mechanics are deeply tactical, featuring a dynamic climate system, realistic fire propagation, and a complex political landscape. With its dark, gritty atmosphere and high stakes, every campaign feels like an epic historical drama where your choices truly determine the fate of civilization.

The Dark Souls of the Total War series... This game is very brutal and unforgiving then the rest of the series. Empires are dying and the hordes are flooding in, think you got what it takes to survive as the WRE?

Awesome. Dawnless Days is Epic. 1212AD also Epic. Overall.... Epic. Battles can be a bit laggy though!
