Shenmue II

1 / 6

Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue I & II is an open world action adventure combining jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, RPG elements, and memorable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern gaming, including open world city exploration, and was the game that coined the Quick Time Event (QTE). It was one of the first games with a persistent open world, where day cycles to night, weather changes, shops open and close and NPCs go about their business all on their own schedules.

Its engrossing epic story and living world created a generation of passionate fans, and the game consistently makes the list of “greatest games of all time”.

Story

A tale of revenge.

In 1986, teenage jujitsu artist Ryo Hazuki returns to the dojo of his father, Iwao Hazuki, only to witness his murder by a Chinese man, Lan Di. Lan Di steals a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror. Ryo vows to avenge his father’s death and sets out tracing Lan Di’s path.

The first game in the series, Shenmue begins the tale as Ryo travels around Yokosuka, Japan, gathering clues about his father’s murder and dealing with nefarious gangsters along the way.

The sequel Shenmue II continues Ryo’s quest, this time crossing the sea to Hong Kong, China. Ryo ventures deeper into the criminal underworld, meeting martial arts masters who aid him on his journey and offer insight into his father’s death, and unravels the mysteries of the Dragon Mirror that his father kept hidden.

Gameplay

Take the role of Ryo Hazuki.

Explore a 3D open world searching for clues, examining objects, and talking to NPCs.

Battle enemies and bosses making full use of the moves of Hazuki-style jujitsu.

Beat quick-time events (QTEs) and mini-games.

I immediately saw all the things that inspired yakuza/like a dragon to be like in this game. The combat is very aged but not terrible. The amount of detail in the stores and locations is astonishing and many newer games don't get it this good. Never saw a time mechanic in a game like this which was fun to have to manage your time and to memories when the stores for example close and open when the bus comes and such. The game never crashed and it runs on a stable 30fps with no dips, would've liked it if it had like a 60 fps mode or so but the 30 fps wasn't bothering me as much as I thought it would.

Shenmue is *the* Stop And Smell The Roses video game. You play this game with knees permanently bent and with a back perpetually arched. You are placed in a field of endless roses, and you may smell each and every one of them. Their aroma wafts into your nostrils delicate and full-bodied, sweet and textural. When I said you may smell each and every one of these roses, that was a “typo”; you *must* smell each and every one of them. Yet, eventually, due to the imperative nature of this task and the infinitude of time, you might find yourself having no more roses to smell. You know all of their scents as if they were ancient reactions latent from some eons-extinct ancestors of yourself. And with that activity expired and mastered, yet still enclosed in the same rose-laden field, you are told to stop and figure out something to do with the roses. You eat the roses. And these roses honestly… taste magnitudes better than roses ought to taste, and maybe you even liked eating that first rose, though the field is endless. And still, if your stomach permits your completion of that previous task, you are left in a far less magical field of headless roses, and yet you must do more. You eat the stems, you eat the dirt, you eat the sediment, and then… “to be continued in Shenmue II”. Though, a year removed, it is easy to find yourself longing for the scents of those roses, as specifically sweet as you know they were. And maybe, you somewhat liked the taste of the dirt too; its earthy texture quite unlike anything else.

I've been playing video games 🎮 since I was a kid in the 90's. One of the first things I held was a controller. I was a 5 year old girl trying to beat levels on Super Mario World. I'd play all night on just 1 level until I beat it and repeat. I'm like "I'm gonna be so cool like my big brother! He's gonna be so proud!!" Fast forward about 10 years. My dad had sent me a few coins for a weekend treat and my brother (who was my guardian at the time) took me to the video store and I rented this game when it first came out. Man, I was hooked. I couldn't believe how much I fell in love with this game. It was instant chemistry for me!! ❤️ We held hands and frolicked in the park. We had picnics together and late nights under the stars. Then, it was time to return the rental 💔. My brother said if I did a month of hard chores he'd buy it for me and I had to keep my grades on the honor roll. I did.. I did some hard cleaning for 30 days. I really worked for this game 🎮. "Your soul is mine!" As I returned to buy it. The capsule toys (so fun)!! I really liked the button set up for the fighting style. I absolutely loved it! I am really good at it. I love the characters, I love the martial arts, the story and also the culture. My brother was into martial arts. He said.. "If you take this stick to the back yard and sand it down and polish it up, I'll teach you some stuff." I did. I took that stick and made my own bo staff. Shenmue is so many memories for me. It is my ultimate love as far as games go. 🎮 https://youtu.be/de3UTAfKGfQ?si=LEdo9wV9MyBcBQh1
