Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
Experience a nerve-racking Lovecraftian adventure, rebuilt from the ground up with modern graphics and gameplay. Become Sherlock Holmes, and find yourself at the heart of the terrifying Cthulhu Mythos as you investigate a series of mysterious disappearances in Europe and the US.
A Lovecraft meets Sherlock Holmes crossover, The Awakened puts you up against the legendary Cthulhu Mythos. Investigate a series of mysterious disappearances, apparently linked to a dark cult that worships an Ancient God. Whatever their plan is, you must put a stop to it… or face unspeakable consequences.
For the first time in his life, Sherlock is truly afraid. A man of rationale and reason, he faces an otherworldly entity that defies all logic, and this discovery is as enlightening as it is shattering. The pursuit of the truth pushes Sherlock to the verge of madness, and it’s the only story that Watson will never publish.
Taking place in 1882, The Awakened lifts the curtain on how Sherlock and John, mere roommates at the time, became the world-famous crime-solving duo. Key pillars
Investigate the Cthulhu Mythos as imagined by H.P. Lovecraft and face Eldritch horrors beyond human comprehension
Fight encroaching insanity as you pursue answers to questions that have no rational explanation whatsoever
Find clues that will lead you through the famous Baker Street in London, a haunting psych ward in Switzerland, the perilous Louisiana wetlands and more
A reimagining of the 2008 title: Rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine, The Awakened boasts modern graphics and animations, an expanded storyline, numerous side quests and new mechanics including unique insanity gameplay.

This is honestly a big disappointment. I’ve played all the modern games in the series, and I’d say this is the worst one. I don’t want to spoil the game, but it has almost nothing to do with Cthulhu except for the concept. You won’t really see Cthulhu or learn much about its story, so don’t let the cover fool you. If you want a truly scary experience, I’d recommend The Devil’s Daughter instead. There are also many parts that feel very boring. I understand they wanted to create a horror atmosphere, but most of the time, it just feels empty. The choices don’t really matter either. They only change some dialogue, and if you pick the wrong option at the end, the game simply makes you go back and choose the right one. It feels more boring than scary. ***Edited and added: I forgot to mention that teleporting you into another world (whether it’s real or just in your mind) doesn’t really make sense, especially when the puzzles are just randomly placed there. It feels like the developers went: “OMG, this is a cool puzzle from another game, but I have no idea how to fit it into this one. Well, I’ll just dump it into this realm and let the players figure it out.”

While you can get this cheap for 90% on sale I still don’t think this is a good game. Prob worst Sherlock Holmes game I’ve played in terms of story telling. You keep teleporting to different parts of the world, finding some stuff and just leaving places unresolved. Very difficult to play without a guide too.

Now this is, unlike Sinking City, some fine-ass lovecraftian horror. No hordes of monsters, no soloing eldritch abominations. Just you and your fleeting sanity. The game takes Chapter One and turns it into a linear concentrated adventure and I absolutely love it. The atmosphere, direction, and sound design are very good, but the gameplay lacks variety compared to other, older titles, and might feel stale in the midgame and on. Not the best Frogwares title, but certainly worthy of a thumbs up.

The cosmic horror and detectives was a combination that felt off, but this game proved me wrong. At the beginning it can feel weird to play due to the very different gameplay it has compared to other games, but when you get used to it, it feels more intuitive. The story is another great plus and you can really feel like you're getting into something that shouldn't be seen, the fact that Cthulhu never makes a proper appearance leaves you that uneasy and creepy feeling that it's there, but not completely. It's an amazing game, a little short, but completely enjoyable.

Knowing this was a continuation to Chapter One, I did not expect to see Cthulu or any real monsters and absolutely expected this to be the falling into madness of Sherlock Holmes. I feel like it didn't entirely relay that point across, it was never made clear whether everything Sherlock experienced was real or not. And I feel like a definite answer would have been better considering this is a Sherlock Holmes story. I honestly think that attaching the Sherlock Holmes name to a Lovecraftian story like this weakened the overall story of this game and left me unsatisfied.

I enjoyed this game. It's my 3rd game from Frogwares (yes, 3rd one with a Lovecraftian story, because that's the boat I'm on right now HAH NO PUN INTENDED I SWEAR), and I really had fun playing it. I love the graphics, the game mechanics - which are already a little familiar to me after playing The Sinking City - and obviously, I like the overall vibe and story. Tho, once again, it's useful to read all the Tips that pop up in the top-left corner of the screen. I had a great laugh when I tried to understand what the NPCs were talking about, until I noticed that they are basically speaking in Simlish if they're not talking about sub-quest/main quest stuff, lol. Because you know me, I HAVE TO check every detail to make my internal goblin happy. I love how the world is designed - even if it only looks open but isn't. You can see nice views, pretty homes, not-so-pretty faces, posters from Oakmont... Oh yea. You've read it right. But the reuse of objects isn't annoying at all. To be honest, I smiled every time I saw a poster, a statue, or even a kitchen stove that I'd already seen in The Sinking City. Especially since it's all pretty fitting, you know? The whole "awakening of Cthulhu" theme etc. It's actually amazing how we get to see two different perspectives on going mad because of eldritch knowledge - you can see Sherlock slowly losing it, while Watson is there to help him get back. One is clearly more affected than the other, and the parts where Sherlock starts getting really deep into it? Maaaaan. They're trippy. I love it! And then there's the fact that you start noticing the same painting everywhere... and your playable dudes notice it too. Ach. Cherry on the cake. So it's intentional after all! At least this ONE painting, you know. You know? You knoooow. I love the different dialogue options too - that's the part I loved the most in The Sinking City. And the voice actors for Sherlock and Watson? Man, I love their work - especially when Sherlock was shouting for the doctor to come. The puzzles are at just the right level of difficulty too. They're not too easy, but they don't make you want to throw your keyboard out the window either, so that's a win. Both the main story and the side quests were satisfying - not too long, not too short. Just enough to keep me interested without making me feel like I'm doing the same thing for 15 hours. The ending... I guess it was very Sherlock Holmes-oriented and had that very Sherlock Holmes kind of vibe. Did I want to see some eldritch terrors? Of course I did, duuuuh. However, it made sense the way it ended, so I'm not super mad about it. But I'm not exactly jumping from happiness either. It took me around 9 hours to finish the game, with few achievements missing (mostly ones I'd get by making different dialogue choices.). I give this game an 8/10. The vibe and everything around it are great. I can see some things that could be tweaked, but that's probably me and my internal demons speaking. I know for a fact that I will happily check out the other Sherlock Holmes games after I finish my ridiculously long list of planned "to-play" games for the near future. And yes, apparently I am still not done with Lovecraftian games, but will take a break for now. Still reading Lovecraft books nonetheless. Send help.

Sooooo, here goes. I know I wished for Sherlock Holmes without all this sandbox crap, and... I got it! Which is good. Now, as for the Sherlock Holmes I got, I have to say that... well, it's fine. It's a good game — a remake, so to speak. But after, what, two decades of Sherlocking around, the material is truly spent. Even Doyle got bored with it and wanted to kill him off. Didn't quite pan out, though... As for the actual game, if you're a fan of this more-than-two-decade-long series of Sherlock games, you will be... I guess... fine with it. But I think the material peaked with *Jack the Ripper* and ended with *The Devil's Daughter*. I know I wished for something that would bring back the feeling I had while playing those games, and it didn't quite make it. Dear Frogwares Games, what I would like to propose is: let Mr. Holmes rest for a bit. Perhaps concentrate on something more novel and exciting, with a similar fan base!!!! Have you ever considered Robert van Gulik's *Judge Dee*? That's a classic that has never been properly explored in video games. Huh? ...Huh? Well, I love you anyway. And all those trolls who say you wouldn't get to see Cthulhu are Russian propagandists. Of course you wouldn't get to see Cthulhu — that would be preposterous!!!!!
