Classic Beat'em up with Asian influences, Shing! will take you through the land in the pursuit of the Starseed, a magical source that supplies this world's technology. Slice your way through waves of enemies solo or with up to three friends to get it back, as you bask in the warmth of the game's colors, clearly one of its strongest assets. Because it does look nice ! From sunsets to mystical forests or even a city on fire, the environments are easy on the eye and sometimes allow for environmental kills, which is always a plus in Beat'em ups. Instead of lives, you have a party of four characters to cycle through, each with their own style and special moves. It may seem too easy at the start, but you will definitely need those four fighters for some of the late game encounters, as the enemies can get pretty brutal. There are "lore rooms" in each level to get to know a bit more about your characters, where they exchange and tell a short story that's usually funny or at least entertaining, helped by the fact that the game is fully voiced. Beating missions and challenges rewards you with costumes, for some light visual customization. Although the game promises revolutionary controls with the right stick, it's not very practical. Which is why you'll probably switch to regular controls quickly, that still allow you to use the one fancy mechanic of choosing whether to hit high, mid or low on some enemies that require it. Besides this, there isn't much depth to the combat. It's possible to launch enemies in the air for some short combos, parry their projectiles and melee attacks, send their bombs back to them... But at the end of the day, mashing remains the most efficient way to play and unfortunately the combat isn't the most exciting. Enemies have too much health and some of them can only be defeated with counter hits, so fights end up lasting too long to be satisfying. That's why Shing! will be decently fun for one playthrough, but it's unlikely that you'll feel the need to replay it on a higher difficulty, or spend too much time on the different challenges. The seven missions only take 5 hours to beat, and yet, the last ones still feel slightly too long because they're basically 30 minutes of mashing. I've enjoyed Shing! for its humor and characters, colorful in more ways than one, but as a Beat'em up it's quite shallow. The combat isn't deep enough and it's a very forgettable game. I think a 5 is fair. It's fun as long as you don't expect much from it.
