As part of an expedition sent to find a home beyond Earth, you will write the next chapter for humanity as you lead your people into a new frontier and create a new civilization in space. Explore and colonize an alien planet, research new technologies, amass mighty armies, build incredible Wonders and shape the face of your new world. As you embark on your journey you must make critical decisions.

From your choice of sponsor and the make-up of your colony, to the ultimate path you choose for your civilization, every decision opens up new possibilities. Features

Great Game. Different enough from the other civ games to be interesting. Still playing after 12 years, my steam time covers less than half the hours spent playing. Owned the hard copy for years before adding to steam. Needless to say I don't agree with the negative comments on here.

I just wanted this game to be like alpha centauri. But it's not. And I understand why it's not, but it's still a shame.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth was supposed to be an epic journey of humanity to the stars, but for me it was more of an overcooked and rather boring expansion pack for Civilization 5. It all starts off promisingly – you fly into space, colonize an alien planet and encounter alien life. But in practice, this "alien life" means that you will be eaten by a giant green worm on your fifth turn, because your units are about as strong as a wet handkerchief. Visually, the game is incredibly dull; the entire planet is covered in a strange green slime (which they nobly call miasma) and after a hundred turns, the monotonous graphics will make your eyes cross. The biggest stumbling block is the so-called technological spider, which has replaced the classic tree. It is a confusing chaos full of sci-fi names that you have no idea what they mean. Instead of looking forward to exploring gunpowder, you click on “transhumanism” in confusion and hope that it doesn’t accidentally summon another worm. The game does offer an interesting system of affinities (directions in which humanity develops), but that potential remains half-buried under a pile of stereotypical clicking. There’s no space odyssey, it’s more like a tired shift in an intergalactic factory. I’ve done what I had to do and now it’s just a quick return to good old Earth history. 30%

Played it a ton, still love it. Solid 4x strategy with a very different feel compared to other civ franchise titles.

Waste of everything. Glitches out your *ss. When (IF) you do get it to play, stops working once all techs are discovered.

TLDR; It's fine. A lot of people comparing this to Alpha Centauri, and while I agree it's nowhere near as fun, it's a different era. I feel like the devs tried to overcomplicate this game to match the learning curve of SMAC and to make it more in-depth than CIV 5 to appease the less-casual, more nostalgic players who demanded this. The result was a bit of a mess. The feeling of isolation and being out-of-your-depth in an alien world of SMAC is lost. The gameplay, casual or otherwise, of Civ 5 is lost. Unnecessary, nonsensical features can wreck a game. I think if you truely approach playing this as a standalone game and without expecting SMAC or Civ5, you'll enjoy it. WIth one caveat - disable the DLC Rising Tide. Rising Tide is absolutely unnecessary. The best parts of it (Sea bases, Artifacts) could have been rolled up into the base game. The crappy bits (diplomacy, quests, artifact wonders) are disgracefully bad and shouldn't have been included. It's a massive shame you can't enable/disable parts of these when setting up a custom game. This DLC really feels to me like an easy cash grab by emulating what they did with Alpha Centauri's Alien Crossfire addon. Stop.
