Words alone cannot explain how Signalis has physically and mentally tormented me, yet, I love the game more than anything there is in this universe. Perhaps, Hell is Heaven.

SIGNALIS is one of those games where I feel like I understood what was happening, and then five minutes later I’d start questioning whether I understood anything at all. I’d finish a session and still be thinking about it, sometimes remembering some completely random detail from earlier and wondering what it was actually supposed to mean. I really like how much atmosphere the game gets out of its environments. The retro sci-fi aesthetic coupled with authoritarian/dystopian vibes, and all the posters, documents, notes, and other little details scattered around make the world feel strangely believable. German and Japanese influences work really well together too. Everything feels familiar in some way, but never quite normal. There were a few moments where I’d just stop and look at something because I wasn’t even sure what I was looking at. Even something as simple as a picture can leave you wondering what exactly you’re supposed to be seeing. I also liked all the references to other art and literature. Isle of the Dead was interesting, but The King in Yellow especially stood out to me because I knew basically nothing about it before playing SIGNALIS, so I ended up looking it up afterwards. I like when a game makes you curious enough about something outside the game that you actually go and look into it.

It's a survival horror game - like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but isometric - it's spooky, there's puzzles, there's inventory management. Has a very cool aesthetic - you can see it in the trailer. Story driven - though, wrapping your head around it is tricky. The game has a strong emotional core, which should keep you hooked for the about 6-10 hours on your first playthrough. It's short and sweet, sapphic longing included (probably the most tasteful queer representation in a game yet). It's made by two depressed Germans - a guy (I think) and a girl (probably) - a labor of love, to be sure. It goes on sale sometimes. It's a good game with a good story - I honestly think it's perfect. You should get it, I think. SIGNALIS wears its MANY direct inspirations on its sleeve - it combines, AMONG OTHERS, many notable pieces of 90s-00s Japanese anime and gamer culture with Lovecraftian horror literature and a broader European 19th-20th century cultural (classical art and music) and historical influence that creates a both unique and familiar artistic experience - for that alone, it deserves attention. The setting being of special note, as it echoes the traumas of the Cold war from a very unique lens of the East-German DDR, combined with an Alien-inspired kind of retro future. Though, its shamelessness in the inclusion of inspired material can be jarring at times - leading some to question the game's originality. Personally, I think it's pretty neat. A major scene includes a direct scene reference to Ghost in the Shell (1995), interspersed with images directly referencing Neon Genesis Evangelion, while the track 'Die Toteninsel' plays - which is a reference to the series of paintings of the same name (Böcklin, 1880s) which features heavily in the scene (and the rest of the game) as well, but it is itself inspired by Rachmaninoff's piece of the same name, itself based on one of the paintings. This will either annoy you, or it will make you feel very cultured - I'm not sure which of those I am. After I first played it, I spent about a month trying to understand it - suffice to say, I am very invested in SIGNALIS - it's definitely my favorite game so far. It seems it inspired a new wave of indie titles, so here's hoping we'll get a similar banger in the future! <3

I started the game without understanding anything and I finished it without understanding anything. But now I have an existential crisis. 10/10 would erase my memories to play it again <3

A somber masterpiece of an indie. It's a love letter not only to classic horror video games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but also to classic anime aswell, like Serial Experiments Lain, Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell. A horrifying and beatiful game. Remember our promise.

Excellent classic survival-horror, with gameplay very similar to the older Resident Evil episodes and with a visual style and storytelling that reminded me of Tsutomu Nihei's mangas (Blame!). The beginning of the adventure is rather sparse in text. The main character, Elster, a Replika (= synthetic being) wakes up in a spaceship landed on a cold moon. She realizes that her Gestalt partner (= human being), Ariane Yeong is no longer on board. What follows is your adventure in search of Ariane in the mining facility located near the spaceship. Naturally, being a survival-horror game, the mining facility quickly reveals corpses and, more importantly, Replikas corrupted by a mysterious infection. During the adventure, you will also encounter few survivors. And documents scattered around will provide a lot of information about the Signalis universe and I must say that it turned out to be much richer than I imagined at the beginning of the adventure. The story is also more compelling than I expected, though it should be noted it remains open to interpretation. The deeper Elster descends into the lower levels of the facility, the harder it becomes to distinguish the boundary between dream, memory, and reality. Consequently, the story is intentionally challenging to piece together (a bit like the manga Blame!). Yet, the masterfully crafted atmosphere makes the adventure memorable. A sequel or another game in the same universe would be a perfectly concevable possibility. The gameplay is solid, both in terms of fights and puzzles. And it's quite faithful to the old Resident Evil (RE) games in top-down view. The controls follow the same somewhat rigid logic: you move, you reorient yourself to aim, and you fire rather slowly at enemies who are not so slow as they appear. There were one or two times when I had to curse the aiming lock, when several enemies were in the same line of fire, but otherwise no problem. Unlike RE, the inventory consists simply of a set number of slots. Difficulty options at the start of the game allow you to choose between 6, or 8 slots to make things easier. In any case, trips back and forth to store excess items are required, just like in RE. Another notable point is that the progression is divided into independent zones. Once you reach a new zone, you cannot return to the previous one. There are 5 or 6 zones in total. While the puzzles may seem harder than those in RE, the highly detailed mini-map, which shows key items found in each room, greatly simplifies progression. Many puzzles are solved thanks to the variation of the frequency band of your radio, it's a touch of originality that I appreciated. I finished the game on the highest difficulty, but I think that even in normal mode the difficulty remains quite challenging. Staying discreet and avoiding the enemies is often the best strategy. The game features three bosses, the final boss being the most difficult and the longest to defeat. I really enjoyed the unique atmosphere of Signalis and I hope rose-engine will develop a similar game in the same universe.

I want to make one thing clear, this is by no means a bad game, not even close. All you'll be hearing is one guy's subjective opinion who understands this is a objectively good game. Now, I don't like RE type gameplay. Crow Country and the such, in terms of gameplay it's not for me, so safe to say that was very boring to me. Combat is.. weird, feels clunky at times. Being honest, avoid combat if you can, save bullets for bosses or when you are "tuning" and there's enemies on you while you're busy tuning your radio for the worst music this world has to clear a room. I am super mixed on the puzzles here. Sometimes I have no idea what to do and that could be because I'm stupid so, skill issue. Some puzzles themselves were cool though. Onto stuff I liked: Art and art direction style all those things are mind blowing to say the least. Poly, full hand drawn animation, pixel art, and sometimes generally environment is a treat and a half. Story.. okay, obviously character driven and that's without saying. I.. did not feel attached to the characters. I felt for Elster and Ariane, but that's about it. As a love story, it's tragic and really does well with that, it's super interesting. No, it being yuri doesn't make it any better, sorry. I don't mean that rudely or anything, I'd only like written relationships for the good writing they have or could potentially have, and yknow they got it so that's what matters to me. It's just a shame I don't have personal attachment to them. Music is woo-ey and stuff and I like that here. (It's good okay idk what to add there, it fits and its gud) Part of me didn't get what happened, so I read answers of shared questions I had others already raised. Sadly, I really don't have anything close to what you'll see the majority see in the game. It sucks because I can see something special here but it's just not for me. So, that's to say, I am not trying to say "don't get this game" Do, I am sure you'll love it. The concepts and all are so cool and intriguing to me. I'd be willing to listen to a story explanation video, that would be fun and I mean yeah it did interest me enough in that aspect to get me to want that.
