I played Sniper Elite 4 first, so I decided to go back and retry Sniper Elite 3—and wow, this game feels absolutely awful to play. I honestly don’t know how I could like 4 so much and completely dislike this one. Going backward makes you realize just how clunky and primitive everything feels. The movement is stiff, the stealth mechanics feel broken, and the level design is way more restrictive. It’s crazy how much of a massive leap forward the fourth game was because playing 3 just feels frustrating and dated. If you've already experienced the smooth gameplay of 4, do yourself a favour and don't bother going back to this one.

Sniper Elite 3 I have reviewed other Sniper Elite games in the past, so as someone who's something of a scientist in this sniping subject, I consider this game to be the first one to use the modern Sniper Elite formula. It's less about war and more about important missions. The gunplay has enough variety to allow refined use of secondary weapons and pistols, sneaking is useful and effective and the graphics give you a taste of what the sequels will look like. I have to say that sniping in this game is very enjoyable, especially when you can snipe from prone or from high ground. It makes me want to crouch closer to my monitor to make sure that those pixel-perfect long-distance shots will find their target. And if I had to compare sniping to how it works in other games in the series, then I'd say that this game makes you work more for good shots, which makes them feel even more satisfying when everything lines up perfectly. I also like to use a pistol in this game. Pistol shots need to be taken close, but when those hit, it feels very satisfying. But I also have to say that I give this game a recommendation only by a small margin. Why, you might ask? Let's just say that my overall opinion is that games such as Sniper Elite 4 and 5 do many things better. The maps are larger, the controls feel better, the graphics look nicer, the enemy AI is more advanced, the kill cam works better etc. Sniper Elite 3 was the first game where these systems felt very much like they do in more modern games, but the implementation was kind of shaky. For example, the balance between stealth and combat doesn't always work very well. Many missions, like the one in Fort Rifugio, require you to stay silent and out of sight, but there's very little you can do to actually achieve that when you can't even use sound masking for rifle shots. So you just end up shooting every enemy one by one until you can finally go where you need to go. This is not a bad game, but it doesn't feel very polished, either. First of all, the combat logic in this game is a bit unrefined. Enemies often keep shooting at walls instead of trying to find you. Sometimes you get a ghost kill when it is far from being one. And you can become a ghost very easily: throw a grenade at enemies, get a triple kill, move a few meters back and the game lets you know you're a "ghost". The game gives you strong notifications when you need to relocate, leaving less control to the player, and it also tells you when the relocation succeeds. Enemies won't come chasing you very eagerly. As long as you take a shot and run like 30 meters to the side (50m during high alert), in most cases you'll be fine and the enemies won't even pressure you. And one more thing: you just don't have enough explosives such as grenades unless you search every nook and cranny. When you search enemies, you might find only 4 bullets for an SMG, like literally. Many times in my playthrough I was in a situation where I wished I had at least one grenade, but had none. Second, the camera can feel a bit wonky. When you move the mouse around to aim and look around, it feels floaty and not as grounded as it should. After trying different sensitivity settings, I personally felt like I couldn't get a good feel for the mouse controls without using low sensitivity, mouse smoothing and V-Sync at the same time, while also capping the FPS to 60. That fixed my camera issues and made the controls feel a lot more enjoyable. Third, the kill cam can work so horrendously sometimes that the target doesn't even get shot in the cam when it should. And worse, the cam might pass the target altogether, meaning that it might just show you what's next to your target, like an empty background with nothing on it. And fourth, there are times when Empty Lung doesn't work quite right, especially at longer distances. Like when you're zooming in on an enemy and taking a shot straight into the heart, with the reticle alignment seemingly perfect, but the shot misses entirely. Luckily, this is not very common — and might have to do with the fact that there are plenty of invisible parts in environmental models, like walls and fences, that can stop the bullet — but it also goes to show that with each weapon you have to keep your ideal distance in mind. It's a bit weird how much you actually need to correct your aim with a rifle for an enemy that's only 100–150 meters away from you. It doesn't hinder aiming, but it feels a bit like you need to aim into the sky when the enemy is not even that far away. Other peculiarities: grenade kills give only 5 XP and trap kills 10 XP, when you can get like 20 XP for a normal kill (an organ kill is worth 30 XP or more) and an additional 5 XP for every headshot. This makes trap kills almost worthless. When you shoot to kill one enemy, it can also kill the other one nearby even when the bullet trajectory is nowhere near the 2nd victim. Enemies can sometimes shoot you through (metal) walls. Enemy snipers can shoot you across the map faster than a CS pro waiting in the corner, even when your position is undisclosed and you appear from the corner for the very first time. And when you shoot an explosive object or a car, the game might only register the explosion and completely disregard the fact that you killed an enemy, too. You need two Panzerschreck shots to destroy a tank. In mission 7, you need to destroy 3 tanks, you're trying to find Panzerschrecks, and the enemy snipers and tanks will shoot you and kill you almost instantly if you so much as take a wrong turn somewhere. These are some of the things that I disliked, but I still want to emphasize that shooting with a rifle is a joy for the most part. Headshots look nice and are quite easy to do even on Sniper Elite difficulty. That's the best thing about this game in my opinion and why I recommend giving it a try, though it's just a shot away from being good (pun intended). If you've played games like Sniper Elite 2, 4 or 5, or Resistance, or even the Nazi Zombie Army games before, and liked them, then I don't see why you couldn't enjoy Sniper Elite 3 as well, but I started hating the game the more I played it. Some game mechanics in Sniper Elite 3 feel almost the same as in those games but slightly less refined. And like many other reviewers have said, the maps are not the best in this one, often lacking verticality and options for maneuvering. Some say that the bullet ballistics in this game are different from the other games, but I didn't notice a huge difference apart from what felt like a slight overcompensation for bullet drop and wind. Final score: 5/10

Originally played this game on my 360 but is a worthy title to come back to. Also, nut shots.

English: When the mechanics actually work, it is a massive improvement over the second game. However, the game just completely loses its mind entirely too often. If I alt-tab, it refuses to come back. I was forced to play in windowed mode, and even then, it randomly crashes. After playing for about 5.4 hours, enduring consecutive bugs and the misery of windowed mode, I just gave up. People made fun of Cyberpunk for its bugs, but at least those developers fixed their game. Here, the developers just abandoned their old games to rot. There is no need to force yourself to finish a broken game. If a game starts boring you and bugging out, just leave it open to drop the trading cards, delete it, and leave it on the dusty shelves of your library. They claim to be making a "realistic" game by showing bullet drop, but then you shoot a guy in the head with a sniper rifle and he doesn't die, or the gun registers zero damage. In reality, a sniper bullet hitting unarmored flesh from under 1000 meters is either instantly lethal or completely incapacitating. Yet here, I have to wait for an enemy to stand up so I can shoot, and the AI just completely glitches out. The bugs completely destroy the realism they are trying so hard to sell. Because of all this nonsense, I have completely ignored this publisher on Steam. I already have Sniper Elite 4 and 5 in my library from years ago, so I will play them eventually, but I am absolutely not buying any future games from this studio. If you bought this years ago, maybe give it a try. Otherwise, do not waste your time or money.
