Solasta: Crown of the Magister

Open the character creation screen, half the content is locked behind paid DLC. Why would you make a D&D game and leave half the races/classes out of the vanilla game?

TLDR This is like a AA and grid-based version of Baldur's Gate 3, with less polish but a lot of D&D heart. Some detail I already played this to completion on Game Pass PC, but I couldn't resist a second playthrough on Steam now that Solasta 2 is in Early Access and I wait for that one to go 1.0. This game actually taught me about D&D rules that then made me enjoy BG3 a lot. In its own right, and coming from someone who is not an expert in D&D, all the mechanics are pretty deep. If you are not familiar with D&D rules (like I was when I first played this), it is true that probably you'll have to google stuff many times to understand how some things work. But, then you'll grow to appreciate how deep the systems go - it just doesn't hold your hand when things get deep, but rewards you for your knowledge in all the dimensions. You start by making your party of 4 amognst the types of classes you'd expect, which have amazing depth in differences of how they play - that in itself can be both dauting or rewarding if you experienced. You can make your characters to excruciating detail in all the aspects, or you can pick characters already made. Then you set out as a fresh group of explorers to a nearby outpost that has gone silent. Immediately you see that the graphics, particularly in the faces/characters, are a bit on the more basic side, but characters still have some charm and personality to them. It has some lore to it, but I appreciate it's not overwhelming right from the start, and you actually can enjoy the story and slowly uncover what's going on as you play and familiarize yourself with all the mechanics. Basically the game loops goes like this: "town" sections where you talk to NPCs and merchants, "mission" sections where you explore the world and face the enemies and discover stuff, and, also "travel" moments, where your party is moving and you need to manage rations and speed of travel: more speed means more risk of being ambush, less speed means probably more rations consumed. All this can be "manipulated" by your party's abilities: it's not difficult to have at least one member that can easily find food along the way, for instance. Lastly on the gameplay loop, the battles themselves happen on a square grid system, with height (kinda like the XCOM games), putting all the D&D rules on top of it - pretty deep stuff and I imagine a lot of skill ceiling for this. During exploration, you can meet NPCs or face some obstacles where your party's other abilities, like base stats or proficiencies (like knowledege in fields such as religion, hunting, history, etc etc etc) can make it so you uncover more information or have more favourable encounters. All this to say that thinking about your party elements in all these dimensions can have an effect on how things go along, though, of course, combat is very important since, well, you won't be able to progress if you are not overcoming your battle encounters. It has some janky moments, but the game also has sliders to control the amount of quicksaves and autosaves you get, so you can make sure you can rollback if something would otherwise made you impossible to succeed. Like I said before, the graphics can be janky with the caracters, but the actual environments are pretty and there's a day/night cycle that's visually appealing and, of course, enemies being in the dark makes it more difficult for you to hit them. In conclusion If you're interested in D&D adjacent stuff and/or grid-based, turn-based combat, this is an AA game with a lot of heart that will make you learn about D&D rules, albeit you might need to google many things. It is a bit janky at times, but it has a big heart and keeps getting interesting all the way.

Put in for refund -- first experience with the game showed that 50% of the options that were listed (classes, races, characters) were locked behind paywall DLC. I didnt expect this and honestly stopped here because I didnt want the rest of my experience to be hitting more random paywalls -- how far in/emotionally invested would I be before I hit the next ones.....

Warning! Base game has about half the races available. The rest are all paid DLC. I bought the game on sale and for me to buy all DLC will cost roughley 10 times that amount. It's a large investment so that i may play as any race. As for the game, I might give it chance but Im against slimey buisness practices. To be clear I paid less than 4 dollars for the game at 90% off... good deal right? Just so you may play as the other five races, I would need to spend an additional $32 dollars. That's not a sale... thats a ploy

Oh boy, does this game try to deter you from liking it instantly. Trying to start the main campaign, you hit a wall of DLC. After that, a bunch of weirdly dry choices and options that feel like you're setting up something more akin to a Civ6 game than a D&D campaign. Friend, push through that for 15 minutes, it's well worth it. A very, very solid attempt to translate D&D into a video game, and I mean the whole D&D experience. You create the ENTIRE party, give them voices and personalities, and then they freely talk amongst themselves - it works surprisingly well, really neat. The game world feels like your real Game Master's old homebrew setting and I mean it in a very good way. Solid mix of D&D cliches and new ideas: you will meet elves, goblins and orcs alright, but you will also meet creatures you've never seen in a D&D handbook, so the sense of exploration is real. The game is quite rigidly divided into "locations", but the way you travel between them in the overworld is satysfying and cute. Once again: it feels like you're actually playing D&D on roll20, Foundry or some other vtt, Comparisons to BG3 seem everpresent, so I'll make some as well: Solasta is way, way shallower when it comes to dialogue and character interactions. It's much, much less personal: again, you control the entire party. Their banter is great to watch, but it's nowhere near the emotional depth of BG3, and I don't think it ever tried to be all that deep. When it comes to translating D&D, Solasta does combat just as well as BG3 (if not better...?), but fails to convey some other, finer mechanics. What's great is that they're very up-front about it. If you are either suffering from post-BG3 depression, needed a game that really gives the D&D experience, or just like party-based RPGs and don't mind learning the D&D mechanics, you should very much consider the first Solasta. If there is a discount, you should stop considering and just buy it. The only major fault is the everpresence of DLCs.

Graphics? Terrible. Voice acting? Painful. Story? Mediocre. But if you want to engage in accurate, tactical dnd 5e combat, this is exactly what you're looking for. Especially with the Unfinished Business mod, which introduces Artificer, 5,5e ruleset, expanded races and more official subclasses. Tons of playtime to be had with the custom dungeon builder.

The mechanics are fun, the combat is fun when it works as intended. The UI is really bad. One of the most commendable features in Solasta is the three dimensional combat, but it is horribly implemented and mainly due to the UI. Many times the highlighted area of a spell did not match area actually affected, and the bad UI makes it tough to see which units are even supposed to be included if it did work. The are just too many bugs and issues, especially in the DLC, to recommend the game. Quite a few feats and items do not work as described, or only work sometimes, or not at all. A large portion of my playtime was spent redoing areas to try to avoid issues where enemies never finished their turns and made it impossible to complete. The glabrezu never completing its 2nd turn in Palace of Ice is the inspiration for this review.
