SpaceCraft

Alright. I want to be very upfront and straightforward. I think this game is going to scratch a lot of itches, but I need you to understand that, at the time of writing this, they’ve only just put out their first major community update, along with a series of patches and hotfixes. It’s Early Access. And we shouldn’t forget that. If the following paragraphs don't piss you off, this is going to be a good time for you. On with my opinion. If you want to blow a few dozen hours in a discernible, beautiful, well-crafted experience, the first 25, maybe 50 hours will be a really good time. If you’re a believer in the dollar-per-hour-spent metric other gamers use, you’re going to get your money’s worth. And when this game finally gets balanced and tuned to react to a shifting player base, it’ll be a glorious return to familiar stomping grounds. But. And I want you to reread this sentence pair as many times as you need for this to land: They’re still in the tuning stages. It’s not there yet. The play system is rich. Putting a ship together is exactly the fine, fiddly kind of stuff I like to enjoy, and not just because “number go up.” It’s “number goes up for a reason, and you chose that reason.” There are understandable progression gates that I hope will eventually settle into a fair balance between what the player base will bear and the difficulty curve Shiro Games wants to enforce. But it’s not there yet. Tutorial quests are comprehensive, though a little scattershot. But when I noticed one particular trend, I couldn’t unsee it, and it broke my heart a little. There are quests that take you all over the damned map, over multiple steps, supposedly in the hopes you’ll pick up and master a game concept. But the last leg just gives you 500 credits (about 10 minutes’ worth of selling stuff you could mine) and a “Request Complete” splash. That reward felt to me like, “Hey, you checked a box! Have a token of recognition, and we’ll never mention it again. Now go do the next thing on the feature checklist.” See, I like it when there’s a “why” for why I’m in the void. I like it when my travels and adventures bear fruit and I can take a second to appreciate my accomplishment. And there have been one or two quest lines that at least gave me a proverbial handshake before sending me on the next errand. The game has the potential to make you feel like the time you spent wasn’t just a milk run some C-Level sent you on. I think the adventure the game wants to put us through deserves to feel filled in by more than what sometimes feels like filler text. But it’s not there yet. The base play is great for people who want some level of automation-optimized play. You can put together entire build chains. Resources are spread around enough to encourage specialized bases, and if you grind your way through the progression tree, you can eventually transport materials between planets and get a staggered, asymmetrical supply chain going. For those of you who understood that last sentence and thought, “Oh, hell yeah,” this game is for us. Finding a base slot that hasn’t already been claimed by somebody is harder, but not impossible. Again, the server populations aren’t overwhelmingly stuffed yet. But I’ve spent over an hour looking for a base spot that fits what I need and come up empty, and that can suck all the joy out of eventually getting lucky and finding somewhere to start. For people who just want to get the core materials processed so they can make something especially useful, I suspect the game will eventually settle into a rhythm that gets you there without quite so much friction. But it’s not there yet. And it’s gonna take some time to get there. The flight is excellent, and navigating from planet to planet and system to system looking for new and increasingly exotic materials can feel genuinely rewarding. There’s a combat stat that isn’t implemented yet, so maybe there’ll be some pirates or Thargoids or Ur-Quan or some other relentless enemy to shoot your lasers at. Right now, though, the combat stat remains inactive, and most of what you’re shooting at is rocks and deposits. When we finally have something that shoots back, the systems here are rich enough that I can see the potential for something that might scratch the same itch as X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. But it’s not there yet. And it may all be PvE. Being a solo Corpo allows progression to feel solid and meaningful. Larger Corpos have the ability to draw you in and recruit you. Small, intimate groups can complete higher-level Corpo requests (basically multiplayer fetch quests) pretty consistently. So progression is viable if you don’t mind the grind. In my server (called a Quadrant by the game), Expile, four Corpos are actively welcoming people in. But the most populated one is under 30 members, some of whom I don’t recognize as active players. If Corpo-on-Corpo competition eventually becomes a thing, that could be excellent. But there are dozens of Quadrants, and right now the player population feels WAY too thin across them for that kind of ecosystem to really come online. The online market and auction house have the same problem. There’s a lot of interesting AND useful stuff in there, but some of it has fallen away now that the developers have allowed auction listings to expire. Combine a shifting player economy with a rich, active player base and there’s the potential for an amazing amount of trade and activity among players sharing the same Quadrant. But it’s not there yet. And that’s the frustrating part. Because for every time I’ve said “it’s not there yet,” I can see *there* from here. The shipbuilding of Cubic Odyssey is there. The exploration of No Man's Sky is there. The automation and logistics of Satisfactory are there. The bones of the economy and social systems are there. PvE combat is coming. None of this needs to turn into No Man’s Sky meets Elite:Dangerous in a bid for Star Citizen's lunch, and I don’t want it to. I want SpaceCraft to become the thing it already seems to be trying to become. I’m chomping at the bit for a game that can do all of these things, tie them together, and do them with skill and consideration. And I really, REALLY hope Shiro keeps taking fresh swings at that piñata until they crack it open. It’s not there yet. But I can see a path where, someday, it sticks the landing. I really hope it gets there. For their sake as a company and mine as someone who wants the next Avorion.

I've been playing for 984 hours at the time of writing. I have a two person Corpo with my wife. We both enjoy this slow burn game, and look forward to other updates in the future!

felt like the game had good potiential in the beginning and then it just got to repetitive and the crafting is absolutely a slog ... i want to have automation and let things automatically craft without having to stand at a machine for what felt like forever ... once u start getting into more complicated fabrication things get so much worse ... sure if u want to build a base and tear it down every other day u can cheese technological points to advance but its a terrible game design ... you basically get stuck not being able to progress .. getting more base slots should be early on not at tier 5 which u cant get to without base rebuilding every day ... it was fun for a while but the devs dont care to fix things or listen to the community

Game is not worth $20. Feels like what No Man's Sky felt like at first release. A lot of hype and that's about it. It's completely boring after a few missions.

Just so you know, this is an -->>>ALWAYS ONLINE<<<-- "single player" game. I know, right? Can you believe devs are still trying to get away with this BS in--checks watch--2026?! So, naturally, it locks-up whenever you try to exit... Lies, lies, lies... Not a single player game--came across my first human playger 3 hrs in. Too late to refund. Scammy devs--I hope you rot in hell.

It was pretty not-bad for a while... except for the mindless grinding to get ahead. But the ridiculous managed-economy (you can only sell 1000 cr/day at the station shop, and there's only 1 PVP market which charges a 30% sales tax!) was starting to get tiresome, and then came the patch which broke every production system I had. They obviously didn't play-test the patch, as there are more game-breaking bugs than there were before the patch! Maybe come back later, great potential if they work our the bugs.
