Suffer the Night

Continuing my binge of going through Tainted Pact's catalog of games! And once again it's quite well-made, short of a few hiccups I'll get to later on though. Seems like this time around there's a good balance of story as well as gameplay, unlike Exsanguinate and Meat Saw (which both had little/no story) and Weeping Falls Massacre (which was almost entirely story-driven). The story is straightforward but has layers to it the further along you go--which I do appreciate when it comes to games like this. I don't mind horror games that are primarily made to scare the players, but sometimes I enjoy having context behind what's happening, why, the meaning behind the antagonists, etc. You get trapped in a game constructed by a highly-intelligent AI named Mr. Tops and now you have to play his games in order to escape. Whether it's dungeon crawling, avoiding buzzsaws in the funhouse, shooting at skeletons, or avoiding bone-crackly invisible monsters that have annoying magnet-AI. ...More on that part later. I liked the setup of the game, but it felt kind of generic. It's your typical home invasion intro where you start off doing mundane tasks, then some spooky figure starts scaring you, it escalates, etc. I actually did like the game much more when it expanded beyond that and turned into this weird dungeon crawler where you're playing a game within a game and you gotta use this nifty tool to find hidden clues and such. I thought that was all very well done! Especially when you discover you gotta use the tool to turn off or maneuver around traps. So the first portion of the game was very well done. The fun house segment (in theory) is great, but I don't like that it took up a bulk of the game. It went from a creepy dungeon crawler to being stuck in an oversized generic, lethal funhouse that wouldn't be out of place from a mascot horror game. And I get why it's there--you wanna mix up the gameplay and setting a little bit, don't want it to get too stale, too repetitive, but this was the part of the game where it became stale and repetitive. The first section with the buzzsaws was great. The spikes/flamethrower segment was also okay, largely because it introduced a new enemy and gave you a new weapon as well. But the hammer section was the part where the game kinda slowed down and became a bit "bleh" for me. Even the bunny mini-boss you fight there isn't anything special, except instead of a buzzsaw, he's got a hammer. At least the flamethrower bunny had an iron mask on his face that you gotta destroy, and then you can stun him/wound him. Not a terrible portion of the game, but after a moment it gotta a little ehhhhh. The final portion of the game went back to the creepy, atmospheric dungeon crawling. Yay! The final portion of the game also has the most bugs/glitches. Boo. Again, I really enjoyed the concept of this ending section. Can't use weapons, can't see, only thing you have for defense/light is your trusty camera and a flash device. It's very easy to see the enemies here and easy to move around. The enemies should be easy to dodge, but the problem is that their AI is broken. If you're not moving or making noise, they shouldn't see you. But I played this game from the beginning three times now and every single time, those enemies see me whenever they shamble towards me and I'm forced to stun them with the camera. The reason why this is a problem is because the flash on the camera is incredibly loud and will probably alert all the shamblers in the room. And even after they're stunned and you run away from them, their AI will still zoom right back towards you when they get back up. So what you have to do is stun them, sprint away from them, crouch, then back away again, and pray you gained enough distance so that they don't keep chasing after you. And what I've noticed is that once you get away from them, they don't go back to their patrol routes. They just stay glued to your last known location. This has to be a bug. Because by this logic you can cheese them into going into one corner, then explore the rest of the area while crouching and don't have to worry about them. There’s one portion of this area where you will alert some shamblers no matter how silent you are, so you may as well just cheese them anyway. There's also a very annoying bug in the first section where after you get a key and part of Stacey's lamp, you can't go back up the stairs. I was stuck on this part for twenty minutes thinking I did something wrong until I looked it up and discovered many people were having this issue. So you either gotta lower the framerate or crouch up the stairs or crawl, then get up and you can move up the stairs, etc. So if anyone is stuck on this part, it is the game, it is not you. But hey, at least the climactic showdown with Mr. Tops was fun and nicely crafted. So props to that for a fairly fun (albeit easy) final boss fight. I won't spoil the ending, but again, overall I was fine with it. It was cathartic after everything that Stacey (and the player) went through over the past few hours. Fair warning though, if you want the Good Ending, LOOK EVERYWHERE FOR HIDDEN TAROT CARDS. And before you walk to the final area, look at all the walls in the corridor after killing Mr. Tops for the hidden door. Anyways, not much else to say here. Definitely the most ambitious of Tainted Pact Games' earlier works. Bit of a few dents here and there, but I still liked it. Weirdly enough though, I still enjoyed Weeping Falls Massacre more, but that's just a me thing. So now all that's left is Terror at Oakheart and replaying all of their more recent entries. I'm excited!

The game itself is okay! I have to admit I did not finish it because I kept dying at the part with the ceiling mounted axes. And I was tired of trying. But from what I played and compared to the newer games this one cannot keep up. The beginning was quite boring because it was a lot of reading. It's so-so. Give it a try.
