Sunken Engine

Sunken Engine is weird. On one hand, the ship-repairing part is okay. It’s fun for a few hours while watching something else on a second monitor. However, I’m at Chapter 4-1 now and I’m dropping the game. First, because I think I’ve unlocked all the ship-repair mechanics (no idea if new content comes later). I’ve bought every upgrade, so nothing new is coming up. On the other hand, everything outside of repairing ships is zero fun. That Gülcemal ship roguelite is complete garbage - luckily (?), you could skip it. The underwater sections feel completely buggy. In short: everything outside of repairing ships isn't fun, and that system itself has nothing new to offer after a few hours either. On top of that, even for a 1.0 release, the game is buggy as hell. The only real positive thing about the game is the price, but other than that, it’s (unfortunately) not a recommendation.

I'd love to recommend this game. It's oozing with atmosphere and an interesting art style. However, I bought after 1.0 release, and I can't recommend. TL;DR: it's buggy and shallow I don't think many of my fellow job simulator enthusiasts would argue with me if I said that the bar for polish and quality isn't -particularly- high in the genre. It's disappointing when even that low bar isn't met. And I almost wish I could say it's because this is a lazy asset flip game, but clearly it's not, some work went into it. However, it just feels unpolished and unfinished. Some examples: Every minigame around repairing feels like a placeholder, with a couple of exceptions they're all accomplished by holding down left click with barely any other input. Sometimes you let go of the mouse between holding it down, or hold it down in a few separate areas. There's little design consistency. Most of the beginning jobs require you to purchase and stock replacement parts - light bulbs, planks, nails, tape etc., but then you unlock large repair jobs and you just replace entire propellers and ship wheels using 0 resources. It doesn't feel consistent or thoughtful It's lazy about its visuals: Wires have giant gaps as they wind around ships, sails/netting are sometimes single-sided planes (in most engines this is as easy to fix as a simple dropdown in the material menu). Some textures are muddy and poorly scaled. The flashlight is one of the worst I see in games, it's more like a blob that turns the texture brightness in a vague shape in front of you higher, rather than a flashlight, so the colors end up sort of washed out when they're lit up. There are big gaps in the world that are unfilled. There's an entire area you can visit that has no apparent purpose but to contain a single NPC, he never gets new dialogue from what I could tell. There's dialogue about the mayor, but he's never introduced. There's a minigame in the carnival that's "coming soon" but I completed the entire story before it ever arrived, assuming it exists at all. Furthermore, the implication of a storyline around the carnival that doesn't really evolve. Bad/buggy sound design: 0 sound effects for the fishing minigame. Extremely inconsistent underwater sound muffling effects. Radio distance volume is inconsistent. Radio sometimes just stops and starts playing.

Quite janky at the moment, good bones, but not flushed out. Still gave me a good spook a couple times, and boat clean up is soothing I suppose. My save didn't save, or got corrupted or something. Probably won't play again until some hot fixes to flush out some bugs.

There is a good game under there, but there is so much bug. ive played for less than 3 hours and had to fight over and over. door your hear open but visually are closed (bug, not just audio cue), boat that are hard to navigate, stair that you climb without behing on the stairs, prompt that appear but nothing happen, lack of visual feedback, lack of inventory management. looks like the game is not out of early access and need some more time to cook.

I really loved the game’s style and atmosphere. The use of 2D characters within a 3D environment especially looks great and is a style I find both successful and really appealing. The ship repair system and other mechanics are also very enjoyable. I only had some difficulty at the beginning of the game, but I hope these issues will be improved by the time Early Access is over.

Filled with bugs for me. Freezes at the market and crashes at the pub. Playing on steam deck.

A lot of the effects, environments and sound design is really nice; most of the game is very unpolished however. The menus are haphazard, the dialogue system is difficult to read, the controls are chaotic (your cleaning tools aren't even individually bindable) and the character designs are both unpolished and very out of place. While there are shards of a gem hidden in sunken engine, all of the above, plus the writing and general narrative having suspicious tonal difficulties means that I can't wholeheartedly recommend it.

I’m giving this a positive review because there’s clearly a lot of work, ambition and vision behind it, and I did genuinely enjoy my time with it. The world is interesting, the story is decent, and there’s an impressive variety of mechanics. The strongest part of the game for me was the beginning: cleaning and repairing ships, selling goods, earning money and gradually upgrading everything. Unfortunately, once I reached around Chapter 3, the pacing changed dramatically. I spent roughly 10 hours casually working through the earlier chapters, but then finished the remaining story in only a couple hours. By that point I’d unlocked and customised pretty much everything, so there was little reason to engage with the ship-cleaning mechanics anymore. I mostly found myself passing the days just to progress the story. There are also quite a few bugs and rough edges. Sound design was my biggest issue, particularly fishing being completely silent. I also encountered things like underwater swimming not consuming oxygen and managed to clip through the geometry and end up wandering around the ocean floor. Oh, an there are too many invisible walls.. Thankfully though, no game breaking bugs. Overall, I enjoyed it and I’m happy to recommend it, especially as an indie project with some genuinely good ideas. But it feels like it could have benefited from another six months of development to fix the bugs, flesh out the later chapters and give the excellent early-game progression more longevity.
