Supreme Commander 2

1 / 8

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.

I recommend Supreme Commander 2, and it's no where nearly as bad as a lot of people online have made it out to be. My impression hardcore fans of the OG Supreme commander and its DLC/Expansion Forged Alliance weren't happy with developers simplifying the gameplay mechanics, scope and gigantic unit count of the OG Sup Com and its Forged Alliance sequel, to make it more RTS newbie/beginner friendly. I like how Supreme Commander 2 focuses more on story, character developement and world/lore building to the different factions and sci-fi setting, but I was admittingly dissapointed they removed the Seraphim faction introduced in the Sup Commander DLC/expansion (which is my own personal gripe). Overall if you prefer massive battles and ridiculous amounts of units on the screen at once and care less about story and characters, then I don't recommend Sup commander 2 for you. Bit if you don't mind a more streamline, simplied and smaller scale of Supreme commander and appreciate more focus on personal character driven story campaign, then I'd recommend checking out Sup Commander 2!

Having over 1k hours into this now relic of a game is probably insane considering all of it is from playing the campaign or multiplayer against AI players. Nevertheless, old is gold in my opinion, and I love it. Highly recommend the OG Supreme commanders (Supreme commander and SC: Forged Alliance) for a more in-depth experiences as Supreme Commander 2 is a highly 'condensed' version of what this games series has to offer. But still well worth your money, so give it a shot.

Something satisfying about booting up an old-game and playing for the hell of it. I installed the Revamp Expansion Mod (RVE), and found it mimics a lot of what I liked in SupCom1, but maintaining the visual fidelity of 2. Although the gameplay feels a bit arbitrarily long at times, 4v4 matches lasting in the upwards of an hour 20 or so. (For example getting classic Experimental units like the AC-1000 or Ripper gunship takes 'forever' to do.) And the 'game speed' doesn't seem to stay raised, it seems to drop back to base gamespeed at some random either time interval or unit saturation. But besides that, good to see classics are still fun. Can't wait to see if Sanctuary Shattered Sun maintains the feel.

SupCom was one of my favorite strategy games since it came out. On its own, this sequel is a mid RTS. Starcraft 2 came out the same year and it completely outclassed this game in every way. As a sequel to SupCom FA it's just a supreme disappointment. I can understand trying to change some things: I'm not a big fan of the 3 tech tiers in SupCom, but the tech tree just ends up being boring and slowing everything down. But other things are just unnecessary regressions. The streaming economy is gone, the factory assist is gone, the UI tooltips are either missing or terrible, the game is much smaller scale and units feel like toys with toy ranges. The unit auto-grouping is interesting, but underbaked. Right from the start you get attacked by the Cybran Megabot, one of the strongest units in SC1. Here it dies instantly to around 10 basic tanks. The experimentals are underwhelming and the unit balancing is so terrible that experimentals die faster than gunships. Even the iconic monkeylord is gone! The campaign is very mid. The maps are much smaller and even the story feels smaller. The characters and voiceover are slightly less cringe than the first game, but I had no idea what was going on, or why I should care. Today, there's no reason to play this, unless you enjoy disappointment. Just play Forged Alliance Forever or Beyond All Reason. The only thing this sequel manages to get the same as SupCom is the crashes and units bugging out from time to time.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not, but the improvements to gameplay make it the superior SupCom. The campaign is boring and the characters are forgettable, so I'd say don't even bother with it. Plus, after the threat of both the Infinite War and the Seraphim invasion, having the plot basically be "what if people were racist?!" is...a bit of a downgrade, but hey, I'm not the developer... I absolutely think it could use some improvement, but I love the technology system. It isn't an instant win button, you have to work for your upgrades, but it's nice to incrementally unlock new buildings and units while improving the ones I have. It's a nice wild card for the gameplay, such that you can fight the same opponent on the same map and still have a different experience based on what you've unlocked in what order. I can't stress enough how much I genuinely love that the "tier" system was removed. It both speeds up gameplay as well as simplifies and streamlines it. As much as that might sound like word salad, those three S's do mean different things, but taken together a match just feels faster. Does it lose the scale? Kind of...I appreciate that the maps are physically smaller while having grand set design, so that you're fighting on massive, man made architecture or something to compensate. Nonetheless, losing the continent spanning scale is a pure boon for skirmish and multiplayer, since now you don't have to cross a middlepower's landmass to get to your opponents. The game isn't perfect, but it is better than the first game when taken as a game and, while I do understand the negativity on release, it was mostly a case of being doomed just for being different than what came before and that's a shame. Give it a shot and try it for yourself.
