Tales of Eternia: Remastered

This was my very first Tales game, all the way back in 2001. Since then, I have played every game that has been released in the US. There have been some great ones, but Eternia still holds a special place in my heart. This remaster is, by and large, fantastic. The New font and various UI bits aren't my favorite, but everything else is just as great as I remember (noting that, yes, improvements to the LMBS have been made over the years). The characters and story are still great, the music is still charming and fun, and Craymel Fringing is as convulted as ever. Highly recommend for anyone who wants an early 2000s-era JRPG without turn-based combat (this is not a dig at turn-based combat. I love turn-based combat).

A great remaster of a nice little game, you bet! - 4/5 Why a great remaster? TOSE made a great job porting Tales of Eternia to PC. The game runs almost always smoothly, it looks great (especially with new remastered graphics), the game supports mouse cursor so you can browse through the menus and in battle with your mouse (which as a PC player I just must appreciate). I love the new translation and especially a new voiceover that sounds much much better and more professional. I welcome that all helpes like quest markers and completely optional so TOSE knows that preserving the original vision is an important matter when dealing with these old school games. Thank you for you TOSE! Without any helpers and quest markers the game truly shines. You have to everything figure out yourself. Players can get some unique items only when they talk to someone after some story parts even if the game itself tells you to go to other places in order to forward the story. That's the beauty of old games! Like this surprise when you try to change Reid to Meredy as a playable character in Celestia and try to read some books or notes and she automatically translates it (which does not happen when not playing as Meredy). What a nice detail and touch. (On the other hand, she fails to translate other people's monologues when speaking to them as Meredy, which is weird.) For the first time in history, we people of the Western civilization can finally watch and enjoy SKITS! They were not present neither in the NTSC PS1 version, nor EU PSP version. The skits are really nice. They are mostly funny but some deal with pretty serious matters. I also like is the addition of boosters. The game is not anyhow grind-heavy at all, but some boss fights can be labelled as difficulty spikes and in such case leveling with like 4x EXP is much more fun and it does not feel like a boring job to do in order to be able to move forward. Of course, the best approach is to have your game balanced. I dont like grind at all. Last but not least, in case of such old games being ported to PC, I will never accept statements that these games look bad when fullscreen. Well, these games originally ran at 240p, so yeah they really look bad in 1440p, let alone 4K. However, I always play such games windowed using small resolutions like 720p or even smaller. So for me the game looks great. However there are downsides of which one (A) is a nature consequence of the version that was chosen to be ported and the other one (B) is unfortunately a problem with the port itself. A) Which I do not like that this is based on the PSP version released in Japan and Europe which used the 16:9 ratio while preserving the original graphics. It means that the original devs just zoomed the original 4:3 view to fit PSP's 16:9 ratio, think of Resident Evil HD Remaster. The outcome is cropped camera view. Sometimes even happens that talking characters are not entirely visible on the screen because their bodies were just cut off. It does not happen often, but it does sometimes. I do not like this approach. When a game was designed to 4:3, just keep it that way without focing it to be 16:9. B) Just like in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, Tales of Eternia Remastered also suffer from juderring when moving in diagonal. To left, right, up, down, that is completely fine, but moving diagonally can be visually unpleasing. Why a nice little game? Because the truth is Tales of Eternia as an RPG is just not that deep at all as the behemoths Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII or Star Ocean 2 and also its story is bit short. The lore is beautiful, so it is a pity the devs did not manage to use it to the fullest. Had Squaresoft developed this game.... Tales of Eternia is a fun game but a character development system is just basic and does not provide anything new. That only however applies on the character development. But when it comes to combat, this is what Tales of Eternia is about. The fast pace real-time hack and slash-style combat with tons of unlockable skills, hidden skills and combos, cutomizable battle formations and programmable AI of your combat companions (tho not on par with FF12) makes Tales of Eternia a very interesting and enjoyable experience. Mainly, when you already have a nice amount of TP for skills to spend in battle. From that moment combat becomes so satisfying! The combat system is not full real-time as Tales of Eternia contains pausable real-time. The game allows players to stop the battle in order to give commands or use items or change equip or change your weapons. That makes an already great combat system even better! However I must criticize on thing - since battles are seen from side-view (2D plane), with all those characters, effects and enemies together is often hard to see what is going on or when your character is even standing. There is a lot of minigames which I do like but yeah, the biggest disappointment is that titles are just for ...nothing. You can even pick which title of those you have unlocked you wear - as some kind of job - but it adds nothing and is at least as useful as hitting a wall with your head. Oh yeah, and you can literally spend your lifetime earnings to watch an 8 act theater. What other game allows players to do that? Tales of Eternia is a nice little game, but it definitely contains some really unique ideas. Ok Bandai, you did a great job with Tales of Eternia Remastered. Now bring us the rest of the series!

I LOVE this game. Tales of Eternia is one of my favorite games from the PS1 era (it was renamed Tales of Destiny 2 in the west because Namco is stupid). I remember LOVING it back in the day, but never replayed it (for multiple reasons). But the PS1 (and PSP) version had one MAJOR flaw: they cut the camp skits out. Skits are, in my opinion, the best thing about the Tales Of games. I recently was thinking about replaying the PS1 version, but after playing more than 10 Tales Of games, it angered me that Eternia was missing the skits... Now, what do we get here? Basically the same game from the PS1 era, but the missing skits were added. Now this game is complete. Plus, it has some QOL changes that I like. Quest markers, EXP boosts, an option to half or disable encounters, etc. ALL of them are optional, so if you don't want them, ignore them. Me? I like the half encounters option. There isn't much to talk about the game that people don't know. If you never played it, this is one of the best 2D Tales Of games. It's a 2D action RPG with a huge focus on charactrer development. Has a fantastic story, great characters and beautiful graphics (well, for the time. I still like them, but they ARE pixelated). The combat is action based with AI controlled partners. Kinda reminds me of a bveat-em-up, but much more complex. This is THE ONLY complete version of this game in English, so that alone is worth the asking price.
