The Amusement

1 / 8

Status: Completed (99% Achievements) The Amusement is a narrative-driven VR puzzle adventure. Although I have mixed feelings about its level design and sound design, the game hooked me enough to see it through to the end, which says a lot, especially since it’s not a particularly short experience. The game was originally designed around room-scale locomotion for a 2×2-meter playspace. It also became the game during which I accidentally smashed my TV while wearing a VR headset, yes, just like in those videos circulating online. If you don’t have a large enough room, I strongly recommend taking every possible precaution. Standard teleportation is available, but you still need to use it carefully. The game handles it poorly when it detects that you have stepped outside the play area, triggering either a black screen or a black-and-white filter accompanied by heartbeat sounds and controller vibrations. It’s definitely not a pleasant experience. It was made on a very tight budget by a small team, so instead of fully animated cutscenes with 3D characters, you get moving 2D shadows and sketches between chapters. The voice acting is fine, and the pronunciation is excellent, you don’t even need to turn on the subtitles if you speak English. Unfortunately, the sound design for the ghosts’ monologues is awful. It consists of a cheap delay effect that sounds terrible, breaks the immersion, and remains unchanged throughout the entire game. I’d honestly suggest hiring me to handle the sound design; even I could do a much better job. The story is just… there, but it does succeed in explaining what is happening and why. The premise of exploring an abandoned amusement park is enough to win me over. The graphics are at the “Quest 3 potato” level, with some textures looking as if they were made for the original PlayStation. This is essentially a Quest port, and although the developers have stated that some key assets in the PC version received higher-resolution textures, most of the game still looks like a typical Quest title. If you already own the game on the Quest Store, there is absolutely no reason to buy the PC version. In fact, you may have a better experience on Quest, since you won’t have to deal with Steam Link’s horrible and unreliable wireless mode. The game gives you very little freedom. You are generally expected to move and solve puzzles in exactly the way the developers intended. The longer you play, the more you begin to understand its logic, but be prepared for some rather arbitrary conventions. For example, you eventually acquire a gun that uses rings to move you from one platform to another, but the ring you shoot at remains inactive until you do something you're expected to do. The game does include a visual hint system, but it only shows you where you are supposed to go, and that is usually obvious even without the hint. It goes completely silent when you genuinely need help. My biggest complaint, however, is that interactive objects are highlighted only when your hands are extremely close to them. Important objects look exactly like non-interactive scenery, which is a major problem, especially because there are relatively few objects you can interact with. It is very easy to overlook something simply because you assume it is part of the environment. Thankfully, I didn’t encounter any bugs or crashes (Quest 3 / Steam Link / RTX3060). The developers’ attitude toward their players is one area where they deserve genuine respect. They created a massive guide covering the entire game, including every puzzle and every scene. It contains both a highly detailed written walkthrough and videos demonstrating how to solve each puzzle. They even created a dedicated YouTube channel for these videos. You rarely see that level of support, and it is certainly commendable. At the same time, this guide system should have been fully implemented in the game itself rather than left to external videos and walkthroughs.
