Part 3 of my unemployed adventure to play the entire Elder Scrolls series in order: Coming from Daggerfall this game is quite a switch up. Everything is 3D, procedurally generated environments are gone, and quests are all hand made and placed around the world. Daggerfall was a well-made fantasy life-sim, but Morrowind is something different entirely. With any other series this would be a problem, but Morrowind works so well that it's hard to care. Daggerfall felt like a realization of what BGS wanted to make with Arena, but Morrowind is a whole evolution of the concept. NPCs are now fully realized rather than flat images who you demand rumors from, locations are not giant blobs of tunnels with unintuitive secrets, quests are varied and often include multiple methods to complete them, and the main story is genuinely well written and meant to be taken seriously rather than to act as background for your continuous fighters guild missions to slay varmints. The world is hand crafted and very well made to the point it's easy to be immersed into it. The effort put into the main map is largely unmatched, even today. NPCs are rarely filler, random treasure is hidden in fun spots, and dungeons can house some unexpected threats and their loot. A lot of effort was made to truly make Vvardenfel a living world and it goes a long way. Sure, there's some issues and jank, but not enough to ruin anything. I played with OpenMW for bug fixes and minor QoL features, but overall it wasn't necessary. The only real downfalls of Morrowind are the expansions - Tribunal and Bloodmoon. Both are overtuned for their difficulty and feel like fan-made mods at points. But I enjoyed them enough to not quit them. All in all, this really is where Bethesda solidified the Elder Scrolls recipe and formed the baseline for their future games for better or worse. None of their future games have captured the same magic as Morrowind and plenty of them are simplified downgrades, but it's fun to think of an alternate reality where FO3/4 or Oblivion and Skyrim took more cues from MW and treated the player to a breathing world of wild fantasy rather than a giant playground themed like vikings or retrofuturistic slop. Onto Oblivion, the game that used to be my favorite in the series before experiencing Morrowind.

9/10 This game will teach you what a real RPG game is supposed to be like. The main reason to play this game is for its gameplay, if all you want is good graphics, play skyrim. Here you will actually feel your character improving and get faced with real choices concerning quests/factions and your stats. You wont be able to learn everything, you wont be able to talk nicely with everyone and not every quest giving npc will get the chance to give you their quest since you are going to put them 6 feet under before they ever can. Choices and Decisions. Get used to it :D Collecting artifacts (extremely well enchanted items) is one of the most fun things I have done in games in a long time. Artifacts are actually cool here. Not nerfed into the ground like any other game would do. You have to go on a proper journey, defeating daedra, looting old ruins etc. You work for it and actually get rewarded with really nice stuff. I wish most game would do this. Morrowind is also the game that imo does Magic the best. You can make your own spells, the strength of the spell dictates the gold and mana cost aswell as cast chance. So the better you get at casting magic, and the more money you amass, the better spells you can get and cast. For example this allows you to fly around with levitation, run on water, swim extremely fast, buff any stat that you want, blind, paralyze or exhaust enemies. Destruction spells can either be instant 50 fire damage or you could apply a strong burn effect after. The possibilities are nearly endless and only depend on your imagination and character progression. Alchemy is actually both fun AND useful in this game. Its the first time I really engaged with alchemy in an elder scrolls game and its extremely worth it. Technically you can exploit it for money, but even if you just pick your own plants it can give you some very very very good buffs. For example i can loot way more things in a pinch thanks to my self made feather potions lasting 90 seconds. Pair that with sujamma and you become a pack guar. Questing. Oh Questing... On the one hand its tedious since you have read EVERYTHING and there is next to no voiceacting. On the other hand its also the most fun and engaging quest system i have ever used. Being forced to actually read everything made me understand the npcs and lore way better than skyrim ever did. Not having clear quest markers meant i have to actually THINK about what npcs told me and follow the given instructions making you actually feel like you are part of that world and not just "the player" coming to fix everything in a hurry. Apart from the mechanics, Quest diversity is also impressively high. I have yet to find a standart "kill 5 xyz" quest and most quests either have you reach a new town or dungeon, talk to a new person, escort someone or gather 1-5 ingredients for some alchemists. My most fun quest so far was the pilgrimage quest allthough escorting a man who's overly in love with his pack guar had a lot of charm too :D The Quest Journal of this game is the best. There are no games out there that do it better and here is why, Talking to an npc about a quest puts that information in your journal. But its neither too short nor too long. They take the dialogue and rewrite the whole thing as if you made hand-notes, giving you the option to read everything again or just skip across it to get the location or things like east or west from xyz. But what really seperates morrowinds journal from others is that if you click on any text marked blue you will open another page (that wasnt visible normally) giving you further information. Sometimes explaining the whereabouts of an npc, the lore behind a location or even giving you the EXACT DIALOUGE that you had with the npc, not just your own hand-notes. Ok, i could list more positives but space is running thin now. Here is whats bad about Morrowind 1: The graphics are old but can be made better with some very simple mods. With mods the game looks good but its not hd ultra realism. 2: There are some bugs, the one I encounter most often is falling through the floor when it autosaves. I have never died to this and to fix it just open console, type "tcl" for noclip and get back where you were. 3: Npc's tend to stand in doorways, completely obstructing them. Either teleport them away or type tcl in console. 4: Without any mod for merchant money you will struggle to sell any of your best loot for more than 10% of its value. I went with a mod that refreshed the merchant gold every ingame hour but making them have 10x their original budget is also reasonable. Merchants can have up to 10k gold and items can be worth 150k. All in all Morrowind is an exceptional game with few flaws. I have been absolutely loving my journey on this game and I highly reccommend this game to anyone able to read :D

Morrowind is one of those games where you can sink hundreds of hours into a single character. I regret ever trying this game. Addiction at it's finest.

I’ve put hundreds of hours into this game when I was growing up. I can honestly say that even with the nostalgia factor this game is an absolute masterpiece. It’s not going to hold your hand like the current games in the series do. It’s also got some very different mechanics in terms of combat. But I think that’s what makes this game special I can’t recommend enough!

Le meilleur RPG de tous les temps, si l'on accepte que les combats soient très vieillots.

I had played Oblivion and Skyrim before. Playing Morrowind was totally worth it. As in TES 4 & 5, the game is more challenging at first when your skills are still developing and your equipment is low tier. Afterwards you're unstoppable. The story is on another level: I spent whole real-life days reading the in-game books, checking the lore, talking in forums about the interpretations. I've heard tons of positive stuff about Tamriel Rebuilt but I'm ok with the third era and I'm looking forward to what will happen in the fourth one.
