The First Templar First of I have a lot of nostalgia for this one so keep that in mind when reading this review. The Story is amazing and fun and I love the setting. The Graphics are dated but you get what you get with these old games. The World is well built for a sandbox and it feels somewhat lived in IMO. The Characters are interesting and fun with three playable characters each with their own class systems. The Soundtrack very good if simple. The Gameplay is very fun if not very challenging once you get the hang of it most fights are easy. Multiplayer Gameplay there is no support for Online Coop but there is split screen if you have a controller and a IRL friend that wants to sit beside you and play it with you. What I Loved everything, the Outfit options, the Skill Tree, just everything. What I Hated the Arena, Bear Traps, Puzzle/Trap sections. Bugs and Glitches: I ran into one glitch where a collectible does not show up but there was a work around Online I found. In closing The First Templar is an amazing little gem of a game that was as fun today as it was years ago and I think I got it back then for $5.00USA and I got it today for $3 ish USD so its a no brainier from me and an easy 10/10.

The First Templar - Steam Special Edition is a medieval action-adventure that mixes straightforward sword fighting, light character progression, exploration, and cooperative gameplay within a story inspired by the Knights Templar and the legend of the Holy Grail. Developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media Digital, it belongs to an older generation of third-person action games where the focus is placed on a structured campaign rather than a massive open world. Its mechanics and presentation clearly reflect its age, but the combination of medieval conspiracy, two playable heroes, and cooperative combat gives it an identity that can still appeal to players interested in historical adventures. The campaign follows a French Templar knight and a noblewoman who has been branded a heretic. Their circumstances eventually bring them together as they investigate a mystery involving the Templar Order and the Holy Grail. Historical figures and organizations are incorporated into the conflict, including King Philip IV of France and the Inquisition, although the game is primarily interested in delivering an adventurous fictional interpretation of medieval history rather than strict historical accuracy. The result feels like a mixture of historical drama, conspiracy fiction, and treasure-hunting adventure. The story is fairly direct, but its subject matter gives the journey enough intrigue to keep the campaign moving. A major feature is the partnership between the two protagonists. In single-player, one character is controlled by the player while the other operates as an AI companion, and control can be switched between them when needed. Each hero possesses different strengths and abilities, creating situations where changing characters can provide a tactical advantage. It is not an especially complicated system, yet it prevents the campaign from feeling entirely like a conventional solo hack-and-slash game. The companion AI can occasionally behave awkwardly, but it generally supports the player well enough to make solo progression manageable. The design becomes more enjoyable when another player takes control of the second protagonist. Cooperative play fits naturally with the game's two-character structure and makes battles more entertaining because both players can coordinate their attacks rather than relying on computer-controlled assistance. Shared and split-screen functionality is particularly welcome for players who enjoy local cooperative gaming. Remote Play Together also helps extend those cooperative possibilities. Considering how uncommon local co-op has become in many PC action games, this remains one of the strongest reasons to revisit the title. Combat is built around accessible melee action instead of a demanding simulation of medieval swordsmanship. Players fight groups of enemies using standard attacks, combinations, defensive actions, and abilities gained through progression. Individual skill trees allow the characters to improve over the course of the campaign, providing a modest role-playing element without turning the experience into a statistics-heavy RPG. The progression is easy to understand and complements the action reasonably well. However, the fighting system does eventually expose its limitations. Enemy encounters can become repetitive, animations lack the fluidity of newer action games, and experienced players may find that battles rarely demand sophisticated strategies. Exploration takes place across roughly 20 medieval locations, giving the adventure a respectable amount of environmental variety. Castles, settlements, ruins, battlefields, and other historical-looking environments help establish the 13th-century atmosphere. The visual presentation is understandably dated, particularly in textures, character models, facial animation, lighting, and environmental detail. Even so, the artistic direction does a respectable job of maintaining a consistent medieval identity. The environments are more effective at establishing mood than showcasing technical sophistication, which makes the game easier to appreciate when approached as an older production. The Steam Special Edition adds The Arena bonus mission, providing an additional scenario beyond the main adventure. The game also offers 50 achievements, giving completion-oriented players extra objectives to pursue. Its campaign remains relatively focused, so players should not expect the freedom, extensive side activities, elaborate inventories, or enormous character-building systems associated with modern open-world RPGs. This is much closer to a traditional action adventure with RPG elements, and expectations should be adjusted accordingly. Steam Deck compatibility is reasonably encouraging, although the experience should not be confused with full Steam Deck verification. The game is considered Playable on the handheld rather than Verified. It can operate on SteamOS with suitable performance, and its interface text is generally usable on the smaller screen. However, certain interactions may require touchscreen input, the virtual keyboard, or adjustments to the controller configuration. Players can also encounter controller prompts that do not perfectly correspond to Steam Deck controls, while display settings may require some manual attention. It is therefore practical for portable play, but users should expect occasional configuration or input inconveniences. The First Templar - Steam Special Edition has noticeable shortcomings, including repetitive encounters, aging technology, limited enemy behavior, occasional companion AI problems, and combat that lacks the precision expected from newer action titles. Yet its weaknesses do not completely erase its charm. The unusual Templar setting, Holy Grail conspiracy, dual-character mechanics, skill progression, historical environments, and especially cooperative campaign create an experience with enough personality to remain interesting. For players willing to accept its dated presentation, it offers an enjoyable journey through a fictionalized medieval Europe without demanding the time commitment or mechanical knowledge of a huge RPG. Cooperative play provides its strongest appeal, while solo players can still enjoy the character-switching mechanics and conspiracy-driven campaign. It is an aging and occasionally rough adventure, but one with a distinctive setting and a straightforward approach that can still provide several entertaining sessions. Rating: 7/10

"The First Templar" ist ein lohnenswertes Rollenspiel. 8/10
