It's so much better than The Sims 4 it's unreal. You're not crazy. The new game is so boring it made me fall asleep. Sims 2 instantly had me immersed. Shame on modern game devs and publishers.

Bit of a joke to pay £25 for a game only for it to start crashing 12 hours in. Was running perfectly until now, shame on you EA.

DO NOT SUPPORT EA!!! I purchased this game before the news of EA being sold to a Saudi-led group of buyers came to light. These investors include Affinity Partners which is led by Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as well as Saudia Arabia's Public Investment Fund. I recommend doing your own research into this topic to fully understand what this buyout means for EA and the gaming industry as a whole. But, from what I understand, this buyout could lead to massive layoffs, even more aggresive monitization tactics, and a removal of important diverse representation from EA games, most noteably The Sims franchise. If we support EA after this buyout, it sends a message to other gaming companies that this is acceptable behaviour. So, I highly recommend obstaining from purchasing EA games/products at this time if you care about the gaming industy's future. Thanks for reading.

Without a doubt, the peak of the entire Sims franchise. Sure, 3 and 4 made progress in other ways. The open-world and story progression of 3 is fantastic, and 4 has the most feature-rich build mode. It's also hard to beat Sims 1's art style. However, this entry's life sim gameplay, which is in my opinion the most important part of the series, doesn't really have competition all these years later. Really, I think it comes down to feeling like every expansion was designed with the others in mind. In fact, this game has the best expansion of any title in the series. From the king, Nightlife, which brought in Chemistry bolts to add variety to relationships and date night spots downtown and CARS, to Open for Business, which lets your sim build a business, on a community lot or at home, from the ground up. With it all, you end up with the most intriguing life sim available, with tons of career paths, personality types, and lifetime wishes for your little characters. Memories, aspirations, lifetime and short-term wants, interests, turn ons and turn offs, personality sliders, and family trees give each sim an identity and a story. Traumatic events will stick with sims for a while, so will happy events. You can either create your own town from the ground up with a ton of user-generated Sims, or play in one of the base neighborhoods with a pre-generated family, and either way you will end up with a recognizable cast by the end. Most of the time these already existing families have little lore tidbits or starting scenarios to keep things interesting at the start and give you a good idea of what the neighborhood dynamic is to let your imagination run wild. You can focus on one family, or play rotationally through a cast of families depending on how deep you want to go. The problem I have with modern Sims games is how samey it ends up being after a few hours of play. Many modern Sims expansion packs are too focused on outlandish themes, pretty half-baked, or just add outright annoying features. I can't think of an expansion in Sims 2 that I do not interact with (bon voyage maybe?) or am annoyed by, most mainly focus on adding to everyone's gameplay loop and leave the more crazy and supernatural elements as optional content or easter eggs, instead of the modern method of focusing an entire pack on it and shoving it down your throat. At the end of the day, and this is important for me in particular, it feels more like an RPG/strategy game than future installments. Needs aren't a throwaway mechanic, they're a key feature you need to manage and keep an eye on. Same with your career progression, so you will need to set aside time for making Friends, improving your skills, all while keeping in a good mood so your job performance doesn't tank. On top of that, you have chance cards that can throw a wrench in your plans, even resulting in the loss of your job, so sometimes you'll need to adapt to the situation to keep your sims happy and not broke. If you have aging on, you have a finite amount of time to get your sim to where you want them to be in life or fulfill their lifetime want. There are many smaller mechanics to engage with to make management easier, focusing on wants for buffs to your Sim, finding a roommate for your apartment, getting your pet a job, writing a novel, painting, or bartending for extra income. Honestly, if you're a Sims veteran, this game shines with some difficulty mods to reduce wages and raise rent and bills. You approach the game in a much more strategic way. The modding community is huge for this game. There are even mods to bring in story progression if that's your jam. If you run into any annoyance or want a specific feature, there's a high chance there's a mod to address it. Also, the music. Best in the series here as well. It may be the most 2000s feeling game of all time with its aesthetics, but it will always stand the test of time in the gameplay department. For me, that's the most important part of a life sim.

this game is guilty of encouraging my first ever all-nighter back when i was a teen back when it first came out. it's still that addicting, even now. with all the expansions you can really get lost in this game. i think the series may have peaked here
