I played the original Talos Principle over 10 years ago, just long enough to have forgotten all the puzzles, many of which my brain-rotted 20 year old self shamelessly cheated on/looked up to complete. So, I was happy to do another playthrough of this prior to starting Talos Principle 2, in my older and wiser 30s. While I definitely enjoyed it back then, I don't think I appreciated it fully. This is an astounding experience, both as a puzzle game and as a meditative journey on mankind's holistic attitude toward its inevitable death. That sounds so grim in text, but I think the game's approach, aesthetic, and overall vibe is so delightfully optimistic, even as its pontificating on mankind's thorough and complete death. The depiction of AI not as some dystopian conqueror but as a successor, as a child we have knowingly and unknowingly nurtured over centuries through the cultivation of both knowledge and machines, is unique. Given modern political climates around AI, I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it's prescient, but it's probably the most thorough investigation of AI and its implications on sentience and consciousness in gaming. Talos Principle is also one of the few games that couches its puzzle-solving in the narrative. You're solving the puzzles from a human perspective and answering Milton's questions as a human would, in the body of a machine. The thought processes you employ as a player are arguably no different from that of a machine's, especially a machine made in the body of man. And that makes Milton and Elohim's position as antagonists so much more powerful. They're simply nascent creatures trying to understand their place in the world, and succeeding requires you using an intrepid, investigative approach to carving out your own understanding. I think this is one of the few games that I do not mind including somewhat illusory dialogue choices in. At the very least, they get you to think. There's a hefty amount of reading to understand the plot, but most of its in quick spurts and very naturally written, with an equal amount of voiceovers to balance it out. And the puzzles are awesome too! 20 year old me was stupid. If you stick to the main puzzles, they're a perfect level of difficulty, slowly scaling throughout the game without becoming inscrutable. Many are quite intuitive, and above all else, they make you feel smart for accomplishing them. The game never holds your hand in explaining what an item does; it assumes you will fiddle and play with things. The items themselves are so flexible that no two puzzles feel the same, even if you employ many of the same tactics throughout. For those that crave a really hardcore challenge, you can search for all the stars and complete the hidden puzzles, which are considerably harder. This isn't required to really enjoy the game, though. As far as how this works as a remaster, it's... fine. I don't think the original game is a standout in visuals. Aesthetically it's great, which the remaster retains, but the remaster does have the UE5 visual flattening issue that many modern games do. I do not think this was a necessary remaster, but as an introduction to Talos Principle for those that never played the original, it's worth the 40 dollar price tag. However, if you think you'll have performance problems (neither this nor the original are well-optimized), consider buying the original instead. I'm more lenient on this remaster as I think it important to get more thoughtful games, like this, in the hands of as many people as possible. As human-computer interaction becomes more and more an inescapable part of our daily lives, using it to think alongside play is more and more important.

Are frogs people? I wasn't sure at first when the remaster was announced, but I enjoyed TP2 so much that the TP3 announcement convinced me to replay TP1, and I'm happy I did. The game looks great again, accompanied by the relaxing soundtrack. UE5 is a bit controversial due to it's performance hit but I can understand the decision, since Talos Principle is very much about it's atmosphere, and it's only a puzzle game. Fairly bug free and stable, except for the recorder+rewind, multiple times I crashed while rewinding during a recording. Replaying the story in combination with the new developer commentary gave me a new appreciation for philosophy and game writing. It's very refreshing to have a story about pure hope, and the commentary explains a lot about how they approached the writing while simultaneously teaching about philosophy. I highly recommend playing with the commentary if you are replaying TP. Puzzles are still the same puzzles, so there's not much point if you still remember them, but for me 7 years was enough to enjoy almost all of them (aside from the usual brainfart puzzle). Part of the fun of the puzzles is trying to break them as well, after a while you start seeing ways to 'escape the simulation'. The new Beginning DLC is a neat addition, nothing ground breaking, but makes the game end on a nice note. And if you are like me not satisfied yet and want more, the workshop has plenty of creativity puzzling afterwards (though the game's puzzles are still the highest quality). In the end, finishing this game now made me want to replay TP2 again, which in my opinion is a good sign.

Computer hardware, huh? The layer that stretches invisibly over all our activities and only makes itself rudely known as a point of failure, leaving us nowhere to redirect our rage. Yes, the custom maps run so horribly for me that I'm literally unable to play them until I build myself a better rig. That's a real shame. I'm also quite confused why you'd give us an editor for this and not one that covers the new mechanics from talos 2 and (eventually) talos 3, so I have to assume that's still in the works. Almost everything else about it is the best iteration of what a graphical and QoL remaster could possibly be, and I was genuinely surprised that it didn't betray my good will. Yes, we can complain about paying the price for the same game you already played, but that's just the stupid entry fee, and I think it doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things. This is now the definitive version. Sufficient Replacement/10

I primarily like the Quality of Life things added to the remaster. Stuff like rewinding, recorder checkpoints and so on. In The Beginning campaign is also quite fun if you understand main game's (and also Gehenna) advanced mechanics.

Even though this game is different from the original (usually in a good way but not always), I would still recommend it. I like this game merely as a remaster, especially now that there is a rewind mechanic, the recorder puzzles have been made so much less annoying, and not to mention there is a whole new DLC as well as potentially infinite community puzzles to play. There are a few bugs that the original game didn't have, but those can probably be addressed easily enough. If you're willing to buy this game despite the price upgrade, you will not be disappointed. However, if you don't think it's worth it, the original is just as good.

my fondest memories were of the original talos game. the puzzles are exactly how you left them 12 years ago. it takes an already perfect game and revamps it with the second installment's graphics and mechanics. fair warning though; the graphics are quite demanding if you are running the game on 2160p. if you played and enjoyed the 2nd talos game, or even if you want to replay the first game with better graphics, give this game a try!
