Not What it's Supposed to Be This route is supposed to be a switching route. In real life, it's a commuter route. But, from the short length to the lack of passenger trains and mainline freight locomotives, DTG has allowed nothing other than switching on this route. You may think this narrow focus would lead to quality switching gameplay. You'd be wrong. This route provides only a limited amount of switching content which isn't very realistic and has been given a second-rate treatment. (Or, perhaps a new low for a first-rate treatment.) And on top of the route providing fairly little content, even less of that content is actually new; especially in terms of recycled rolling stock. And the content it does provide is not up to a very high standard. DTG doesn't seem to understand (or care) how real railroads do switching, stifling the variety of gameplay. For a Canadian route, many details are suspiciously American. And a lot of the little things which would usually indicate a good DLC are completely missing here. $30 here would be buying you... [*]Locomotives using 10-year-old sound recordings which don't match the locomotives themselves [*]Only one new locomotive of moderate quality [*]Not a single new freight car. Everything here is in the base game [*]A short route, with even more trackage that's on the map but not allowed to be driven on [*]Six passenger stations which aren't used at all [*]Poorly designed gameplay which doesn't represent real life [*]Loading tank cars, which is completely unrealistic as real train drivers never touch the loading equipment, and adds little to the gameplay [*]Lots of missed opportunities for switching despite being a "switching focused route" DTG might try to excuse the lack of content on this route as a 'focus on switching,' but know that this is just a corners-cut route with much less content than it should have. Other routes, like MSB, have bigger and better-detailed areas for switching even though they aren't 'switching focused.' As such, this route doesn't really offer anything other routes don't have, and offers much less than other routes, for that matter. What should this route be? It should be a GO Transit focused route from Toronto Union Station to West Harbour Station. The freight trains should still be featured as is, but the route really needs the commuter trains to make sense. This would give a route with much more value and would counteract the lack of new freight content. As an analogy, Oakville Subdivision is like taking the Peninsula Corridor route, removing San Francisco and San Jose, removing all passenger trains, then leaving freight as it is (perhaps with the addition of the San Francisco Pier), calling it a freight route, and still charging $30 for it. Oakville Subdivision feels just like that; a passenger route where the passengers were removed and freight left behind.

I wish there was a 'Somewhat' Recommendation option for this route. From a handful of short services and activities run, I've come across several pros and cons. The first major con, in my opinion, is very important. Despite the route map and description showing the complete rail network for the Hamilton industrial area, ONLY A FEW MAJOR SPURS ARE ACCESSIBLE. In particular, the massive steel mill, despite showing all the trackage on the map, is out-of-bounds. This leads to an overall unfinished feel, particularly as I saw the map prior to release and purchased based on the presence of all the trackage. I will think twice before pre-ordering based on maps in the future. Second is the sounds. The horn in particular is a sample that can be commonly heard in the first editions of trainz! I'm hoping for mod support in the future to rectify this. Third is the lack of passenger/GO traffic, as the stations are there and the equipment is already fairly well developed. However, this was not an advertised feature and I was well aware of this when purchasing. Once again, maybe something for the future. Finally, there appears to be a distinct lack of diverse services. The vast majority appear to be direct runs between major yards, not even touching Hamilton. The services are also duplicated for both locomotives, so there's no distinct difference between them. This all being said, I'm likely to keep it for what is included. There are multiple decent yards and major industries, as well as switching activities for them, including an interesting tank car loading function. I'm hoping there's a local freight somewhere in the services which does switching on the main, but I've yet to find it. The urban switching feel is good and present. The rendition of Bayview junction and the stations are excellent. And the prototype is practically on my doorstep! Overall, this route felt a bit rushed, with components that still need work. Thus, I cannot recommend an unfinished product. What is there feels right, and looks good. I just wish there was a little bit more.

This route is just an epitome of cutting corners and under delivery. The biggest feature of the "switching focused route" as they called it, sprawling dock area (which they are proudly showing off in manual and pre-release stream) has half of its spurs and sidings locked out and even not modeled fully. And that while having tiny overall route length. Rolling stock shows off usual Dovetail's consistent inconsistency wrt quality and features. - Horns are badly looped - GP38 doesn't have animated brake rigging for whatever reason, as they already have several geep models with animated one. - Breaker panel on GP38 is almost fully dysfunctional, you can pull breakers all you like, loco doesn't care. - No sound occlusion in cabs of both locos, as well as in previous DLC, MP36, which looks like a bad trend of DTG exploring new corners to cut. C'mon, even Heavy Haul had it! - GP9 engine can be started with fuel pump disabled... huh. - Switching in scenarios and services is done in a most inefficient way possible and doesn't represent real way to do it - Cooling fan scripting is very questionable, especially after quite a good one on UP GP-38 in Peninsula Corridor route. - GP9 doesn't have working side hatch all geeps and SDs had before. - GP38 doesn't allow you to crank engine manually via governor handle (they had this implemented before on CSX locos) - MU setup is wrong - Tutorials skip important steps which you wouldn't know if you use this type of locos for the first time. - Engine-driven compressor works when engine is stopped. So much for full component simulation in Simugraph.

To begin with, I'd like to mention that if you were expecting a route to do a lot of switching in industrial areas... This isn't exactly the route. The route itself is roughly 25 miles total, the mainline is 15mi long. It brings a lot of new things, like the ethanol tankers and several X train track crossings, and the detail is incredible for what we are able to use. Emphasis on what we are able to use. The industrial district (South East if you're looking in game) has several branches, but you can only use 1/3 of them. You'll be booted out with the out of bounds message. This doesn't allow you to do a whole lot of switching or exploring. Going back to the 25 miles total, most of the track excluding the mainline is in this forbidden zone. I'd estimate you're only getting a few miles off the mainline. Most of the tracks have buildings placed on them as well in this area, making me think that it was rushed and this part was abandoned from further development. Again, I'd like to mention that the detail for what you can access is incredible. It's amazing in winter. The two locomotives have incredible detail too. The cabs are different from the ones in San Jose and Heavy Haul, and the physics are great from what I've experienced in the 2hrs I've played. The sounds are the same, though. I don't know if the rebuilt GP9s have the same horn as the GP38, but it does take a unique experience changing locomotives away, slightly. The only thing I don't like about the GP9 is that you aren't able to access the engine (the door doesn't open like in other EMD engines), but you can still start it on the back cab panel. (Yes, you can use the marker lights on both, and they do look cool) The rolling stock is a mixture of CSX and Canadian National freight cars. The tankers can be manually filled up and emptied by the player, and of course all the doors and hand brakes work accordingly. A few freight cars from San Jose are also on the route, too. It doesn't hurt using these in the route since it's general freight that fits in. *To summarize for people who don't want to read the whole thing, the route is shorter than you'd want for switching but everything else is great. If anyone is debating the route based on the detail, please look at my recent public screenshots for Oakville. All unedited. I've heard that in the future, like most DLCs, we can be expecting another locomotive add on for this route. Considering that there are a few passenger stations, I''m going to take a shot and say we'll get something VIA, but don't take my word for it. 7/10, route just feels rushed and great rolling stock and engines.

A bloody good route add-on, and it is obvious that a large amount of work has been done. It's highlights are the jobs such as ethanol handling, track switching, shunting sequences. It's timetables are extensive including weather and time cycle options. Both locomotives have been rendered with great care and the throttle, braking, and couplers work very well. The attention to detail, in regard to assets and the environment, is impressive. I preferred the less conspicuous appearance of the GP38. In settings, it would be nice to see the introduction of sliders for colour, brightness, engine sound; and an image capture mode. There is an absence of radio transmissions which I enjoyed in CSX Heavy Haul. However, Oakville Subdivision is a significant and elaborate improvement in several ways. In summary, it is a good buy at full price.

This latest route is the poster child for DTG's 'you've had your dev. time, now ship it' attitude. There are numerous issues and cut corners on this route and included content. But first, we'll consider the pros of the route. TLDR: Not recommended at full price (may be worth it with a 50% discount). Pros: Rolling Stock: Very good modeling on the two included locomotives. Both the GP9rm and GP38-2 are very well detailed and match their respective prototypes well. Although the GP38-2 has been used on multiple routes already, DTG did a good job of modeling the CN specific version, notably removing the dynamic brake unit, repositioning head and ditchlights, adding winterization shielding, and making the required changes in the cab. The added 'climbing' animations when climbing on and off the locomotives are also a nice touch. Scenery and Route Length: The scenery in some parts of the route are wonderful, with plenty of detail and new ground textures. Service Mode: Service mode has a decent mix of jobs of varying lengths and difficulties. Cons: Rolling Stock: Sounds on the locomotives are recycled, with some of the sounds seeming to date back to early Railworks. The horns are poorly looped, inaccurate for the prototypes, and the GP38-2 has a mechanical bell sound despite being equipped with an e-bell. The cabs lack all audio occlusion, so the locomotives sound exactly the same whether you're inside or outside. While these old standard cabs are supposed to be loud on the inside, this is just poor audio engineering. Freight car models are reused from CSX Heavy Haul, albeit in new paint schemes for CN. This is especially inaccurate for the covered hopper, as CN does not own this specific version of covered hopper. The freight car brakes are also too strong. Scenery and Route Length: Despite being shown in the manual and in game route map, massive areas of the Hamilton industrial area are inaccessible to the player. This clearly was not a mistake, as the area lacks scenery, and in some cases, have random buildings and structures placed on top of the track. This severely limits the amount of industrial switching in a route designed for, well, industrial switching. In winter, there are texture bugs that result in many building models being rendered in pure white. While Canada has hard winters, I'm pretty sure all surfaces are not plastered in a perfectly even coating of snow... After watching cabview videos of the area, as well as looking at Google Maps, it has become apparent that a lot of the trackside scenery is completely wrong - buildings where there should be forests, offices where there should be residential, etc. The route is also lacking in many details. The railroad crossings are reused US assets, and do not match correct Canadian markings. Similarly, many of the crossings in the Hamilton industrial area (the parts that you can actually access) are incorrect vs. what they are in real life. The crossings should only have lights and crossbucks, rather than having gates. A quick look on Google Maps would have shown this. The modeling of disused/out of service sidings is also poor - they look more like the team ran out of time when laying track and forgot to connect them with the rest of the route rather than being actually decrepit, old trackage. The auto loading facility lacks ramps for cars, so apparently the loads are magically teleported into the auto rack cars. Service Mode: This route lacks long distance mainline freight, as well as passenger operations from VIA and GO. While DTG may be saving this for additional locomotive addons, their absence makes the route feel quieter than it should be. Conclusion: Overall, I would rate this DLC 5/10, and would not purchase it at full price. Even with the initial preorder discount, I was very close to refunding this and waiting until the route went on sale for 50%.
