1 / 8

Ok the good Looks great as does most TSW routes and the 323 is done very nice and the 323 has plenty of services. However Birmingham new street is a massive let down just one train and 90% of the platforms wont be used and like hardly anyone waiting.. This route needs more trains just the one really brings it down. Also a big asking price for a small route and 1 EMU?? Base game with this cost 330 my currency now for me who already owns that the dlc route is 330 as well???? How that makes sense is beyond me. This really could of been the best route made so far but its almost like DTG holds it back , like Birmingham new street is the busiest station outside of London and you own put one train on it ......we need AI Trains that simply come in to new street and goes off thats all . That price tag does not justifies it and you should wait for a cheaper special then this. People say prices go up yes but then the product needs to show its value and it simply does not. Its still a fun route and should have a neutral review not negative.

It's not bad. It's the kind of quality we have come to expect from Dovetail. It's not better than anything else they've done. Route is approx. 30 miles with 25 stations approx. 1-1.5mi apart. Speed up, then brake, open/close doors, and repeat. Sound seems slightly better. Zombie apocalypse is still on, everything is quiet and trains still run at 5-15% capacity. There's no zombies mode though. There's the usual bag of bugs like getting stuck in the cabin and not being able to move because your head goes through the roof. Thumbs up! Don't buy it.

Higher Price, Sloppy Work!

From the previous highs of Brighton Mainline and TSW3 version of South Eastern High Speed, Dovetail Games seem to be back to their old ways. In real life Birmingham New Street and the southern section of the route are very busy however with just a 323 and a sparse timetable driving this route in TSW 3 is, to put it mildly, boring. Other than approach control in some areas the signals become just a scenery object as the sparsity of traffic makes them largely irrelvant. The addition of additional layered services does little to enhance the traffic, with a handful of early morning or late evening freights, a railtour and 3 HST stock moves. Come on DTG you can do better than this, Oh, and it also looks like someone forgot to finish the scenery between Barnt Greent and Alvechurch which consists of a few random trees plonked around the track.

EDIT: they've since addressed the missing scenery and lowered the number of points required for a gold medal in the tutorial to a reasonable level. I have, however, come across more seemingly untested services since writing this review, so it'll stay negative for now. My original review: The prices of previous content already can be hard to justify at times, but for this route the price hike is downright indefensible. Only one train when most routes come with typically two or three (sometimes even more) locomotives or EMUs? Plus there are many minor problems. Other reviewers already pointed out some spots with seemingly unfinished terrain, but there are a lot of little details that just reinforce my negative impressions, for instance: excessive score threshold for a gold medal in the tutorial, some errors in writing (e.g., talk of a "roudy" passenger, or the route introduction describing some work as "finished on "). My next major gripe: the performance. If you're stuck with a lower-end machine like mine, wait for an upgrade or some solid performance updates (if any). I'm getting worse stuttering and data streaming lag spikes than in London Commuter, even during fairly low-traffic periods, and not just around the biggest stations. Finally, this is a little petty of me, but the lack of subtlety with a reference joke in one scenario annoyed me disproportionately to the "crime". To be a little vague to try to minimize spoilers: the name of one scenario is a reference to an episode of a classic British sitcom. Except the reference doesn't stop there. On a platform of one of the stations during this scenario, you'll find a "character" labelled with the sitcom's character's name, and when interacted with, you can have a "conversation" lifted for the most part from said episode. To be honest, I might've liked it if I encountered it while my impression of the route was more positive.

Currently I cannot recommend this DLC. Whilst it is a nice route, there are several glaring issues that break the immersion: [*]There is a gap in the water of the canal near University station, where the water suddenly changes level and you can see into the void. The gap in the water has been fixed, but the bridge is now missing - the canal goes straight into a brick wall! [*]The lighting at New Street is completely wrong, the station in real life is quite a lot darker, and there are also issues with the lighting in the tunnel towards Five Ways, where one side of the tunnel isn't in shadow. [*]When closing the doors, the door key animation and associated sounds play on a loop instead of just once. Fixed [*]New Street station in particular is too quiet. Whilst other sections of the line also feel quite quiet due to the lack of other rolling stock (West Midlands Railway have DMUs that run between New Street and Hereford via Bromsgrove, as well as freight traffic and CrossCountry services), New Street station is the busiest station outside of London with hundreds of trains passing through every day, whereas it feels a lot like a ghost station here. [*]The departure boards show the trains as having one less carriage than they actually have, i.e.: "Formed of 2 carriages." instead of three. Fixed [*]A minor issue, but the stations all have timetables on display, whereas WMR have removed timetable posters from all their real stations, replacing them with giant QR codes. That said, there are some plus points for this DLC over many of the others: [*]The use of West Midlands Railway signage at the stations and for the onboard posters increases the realism compared to other DLCs, though why National Rail Enquiries number is given as a load of zeroes is a bit odd. [*]The collectibles fit in a lot better with the line, rather than the generic "put up posters" or "restock first aid points" from other routes. [*]The scenery of the skyline really does make you feel like you are travelling in Birmingham, though the immersion does break if you look too closely (like the car park at Bromsgrove). If DTG sort out some of these issues, then I'll revise my review, but currently I cannot recommend this, at least not at full price. I still cannot recommend this as there are still a few issues. If they fix the issues at New Street and the missing bridge at University, then my review will change to a recommendation.

Nice route and train, sounds on the train are great. A bit overpriced though...not a fan of seeing CDN$50 routes for TSW3.
