Transference is a pretty cool VR experience. I had a copy on PSVR for PS4 and enjoyed it few years ago and seen it was on PC so i grabbed me another copy, interesting story, decent puzzles to solve, very nice crisp graphics, works great with either controller or VR controls, its worth the price tag and a playthru especially if your new to the VR experience and want a decent game to try

Transference is a compact psychological thriller that places atmosphere, fractured memories, and environmental storytelling ahead of conventional horror mechanics. Developed and published by Ubisoft, the game revolves around an experimental digital recreation of a troubled family's consciousness. Instead of giving players weapons or turning the experience into a traditional survival horror adventure, it asks them to investigate an increasingly unstable home, solve environmental puzzles, and gradually determine what happened to the people whose memories have become trapped within the simulation. At the center of the story is scientist Raymond Hayes, whose obsession with recording and preserving human consciousness has disturbing consequences for his family. His wife Katherine and son Benjamin are drawn into the experiment, and their individual memories provide different perspectives on the same deteriorating household. Moving between these viewpoints is an effective storytelling device because locations that initially appear ordinary can become threatening or emotionally uncomfortable when experienced through another family member's memories. The story rarely explains everything directly, instead allowing recordings, objects, conversations, and environmental details to reveal the larger picture. Gameplay is primarily built around first-person exploration and puzzle solving. Players search rooms for clues, interact with electronic equipment, examine important objects, and figure out how different pieces of the environment connect. Most puzzles are designed to maintain narrative momentum rather than provide extremely difficult challenges. This makes the game accessible to players who are more interested in psychological storytelling than complicated riddles, although experienced puzzle fans may wish there were more elaborate challenges. There is also no traditional combat system, so tension comes from uncertainty and atmosphere rather than fighting enemies. The apartment itself is arguably the most memorable part of the game. Rooms can transform without warning, lights behave unpredictably, electronic distortions interrupt reality, and previously familiar spaces become unsettling. These changes make it difficult to determine whether the player is experiencing a genuine memory, a corrupted simulation, or something created by the fears of the person whose perspective is currently being explored. The relatively small environment becomes surprisingly effective because repeated visits reveal new details and increasingly disturbing variations rather than simply recycling identical locations. Sound plays an equally important role in sustaining the tension. Electronic interference, distant voices, sudden noises, conversations, and periods of uncomfortable silence make exploration feel threatening even when nothing is actively pursuing the player. The visual presentation complements this with realistic domestic spaces that can abruptly become surreal or distorted. Live-action footage is also integrated into the experience, strengthening the interactive-film quality and giving the Hayes family a more tangible presence than environmental storytelling alone could provide. Transference was designed to support both traditional screen-based play and virtual reality, and its claustrophobic structure naturally suits VR. Fortunately, virtual reality is not required to experience the story. Playing normally still preserves the central puzzles, narrative, disturbing imagery, and environmental transformations. VR mainly increases the sensation of physically occupying the corrupted simulation, while conventional play offers a more straightforward way to experience the same psychological mystery. The main limitation is its relatively short and tightly controlled structure. Players expecting a lengthy horror campaign, extensive exploration, combat, character progression, or numerous complex puzzles may find the experience limited. Its replay value also depends largely on revisiting environments to notice details that make more sense after understanding the story. The fragmented narrative intentionally leaves room for interpretation, which complements the psychological premise but can occasionally make important events feel less clearly resolved than some players may prefer. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Overall, Transference succeeds because it commits to psychological unease rather than attempting to imitate a conventional action-oriented horror game. Its shifting perspectives, corrupted environments, strong audio work, live-action elements, and uncomfortable family story create a distinctive experience despite its limited length and mechanical simplicity. It is best approached as an interactive psychological thriller where discovering what happened matters more than fighting or surviving. For players who enjoy atmospheric horror, environmental puzzles, unreliable realities, and fragmented storytelling, its brief journey can leave a surprisingly strong impression. Rating: 8/10
