Tropico 5 is probably one of my favorite city-building/management games when I just want to relax and build something. The whole idea of being El Presidente and running your own little island is just really fun. You can try to be a good leader and make everyone happy, or completely abuse your power, take money for yourself and basically turn the island into your personal dictatorship. And honestly, both ways are entertaining. What I really like is how the game goes through different eras, so your island doesn't stay stuck in the same time period. You start with a relatively simple economy and gradually unlock new buildings, technologies, industries and ways of making money. Seeing a small island turn into a proper industrialized country is really satisfying. The economy is also deeper than I initially expected. You have to think about what you're producing, what you're exporting, what your population needs, employment, housing, politics and relations with other countries. It's not the most complicated management game ever, but there's enough going on to keep you busy without becoming a nightmare to understand. And the political side is probably what gives Tropico its personality. You constantly have different factions and citizens asking for things, elections to deal with, and decisions where you have to choose between making your population happy and doing what is actually good for your economy.

I am so-so-so happy that I can stage a revolution at least in a game and I am so sad that I can't build embassies for more countries like North Korea, Mozambique, etc. And I am also so sad that the game starts in the colonial era rather than in ancient times. I wholeheartedly believe that it would be actually great to export bananas to Atlantis or Roman Empire, but the developers think that my skills are to weak to resist ancient countries. By the way, there are more pros than cons.

The game's mechanics are very vague and unfriendly to new players. Miniscule things like the game's AI breaking, causing a traffic jam or delay in resources can be catastrophic to your economy. You've built the structures, you've set the trade routes, you've set a budget, hired workers...and you lose money. And you have no idea why. Whatever that reason could be, you'll never know. The game won't tell you. It expects you to sift through every little piece of the map, and hope you can deduce what's wrong. All the while, your economy dips further into the red, until you're hopeless buried in debt. This will of course have a snowball effect. No money, no more infrastructure. No homes, more homeless. Less food, less medical, more rebels. More angry populace. Riots. More Rebels. More debt. And you lose. Also, the game seems to advertise itself as a "dictator" simulator. It isn't. It's the farthest thing from a "dictator" simulator. If you try to run things as a dictator, you're just combatting constant revolts until you're entire military force is either dead or trying to overthrow you as a separate rebel force. Very misleading game. There are better games in this genre. Avoid this one. It also freezes and crashes frequently, after the Colonial Era (The first section of the campaign.) Update: The game is extremely poorly designed, so once you hit 500+ population, the game stutters hard and either freezes with audio still playing OR crashes to desktop. So even though the game is themed around "constructing your own empire on this island", you'll only be able to develop a very small fraction of it before the game breaks down trying to process everything. Even on heavy discount, this trash isn't worth buying.
