Half-metal, half-human, all murder machine

Heavily inspired by some of the all-time greats like Id's Doom & Quake , and Apogee's Duke Nukem 3D , with stunning cyberpunk visuals, Turbo Overkill is the most savage FPS ever released by Apogee. You play as Johnny Turbo, augmented with hidden arm rockets and a chainsaw that extends from your lower leg allowing you to slide-slice enemies wide open.

In this Blade Runner -meets- DOOM hellscape, Johnny returns to his hometown of Paradise and finds its entire population possessed by Syn, a rogue AI, and its army of augmented minions. Desperate for enough money to outrun his past mistakes, Johnny takes on the impossible job of destroying the greatest AI ever created. Rival bounty hunters want to claim the prize first. Nothing is easy in paradise. Turbo Time, wall-running, dashing and grappling hooks, oh my

Turbo Overkill takes over-the-top to never-before-reached heights. Activate Turbo Time(™), a new form of slow motion with a twist. Build incredible speed by wall-running and dashing.

Slide on your chainsaw leg, eviscerating foes and opening up bosses for critical damage, and go car-surfing on the hoods of flying cars. Blast away with the Twin Magnums, which lock-on and instagib several foes, the Boomer Shotgun and its attached grenade launcher, or the Telefragger sniper rifle, which teleports Johnny inside an enemy before they explode from within.

Race through two dozen stages packed with secrets, bonus arena stages, and white-knuckle combat puzzles. Find game-changing collectibles to unlock punishing modifiers like triple-monster-speed and insta-kill. Combine all of Johnny’s weapons and powers to outsmart, outgun and outrun the corrupted legions. TL;DR:

o Kill a boss, get its augment (special power) o Play Spider-Man with your grappling hook o One-up Duke Nukem with your chainsaw slide-slice kick o Kills = cash. Use cash to install augments, upgrade your weapons, and add new abilities in your talent tree o Be a ghost runner while wall running o Attack from above riding the hood of your flying car like a kung-furious badass o Mini-rockets built into your robotic arm? ✔ o This. List. Will. Grow. Wishlist the game to see it happen Don't quote us on nuthin'

“ Turbo Overkill is fast, frenetic and ferocious—excess personified,” said Sam Prebble, one half of Trigger Happy Interactive. “This is the game we’ve always wanted to play; making it is a dream project. Relentless enemies, extremely deadly and fun weapons, speed and precision above all else—if you love Quake III Arena , modern and classic DOOM , or Apogee’s legendary first-person shooters, you’ll feel right at home in Paradise.”

“As the guy who helped launch the shooter genre with Wolfenstein 3D , Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem 3D, Max Payne , and Prey , I haven’t been this excited about an FPS since the golden era of Apogee/3D Realms,” wrote Scott Miller, founder. “ Turbo Overkill is a sandbox of fun and original gameplay ideas that come together like a night of melty hot pizza and your favorite cold, frothy brew. Playing this game made me a Turbo Lover all over again.”

Playing this on Murder Machine was the most fun I've had in an FPS since Doom Eternal on Nightmare: every new adrenaline-pumping combat scenario not only made me sweat with joy, but made me appreciate just how rich and deep the enemy, weapon and level design were. I was seriously impressed at just how much the game did to constantly raise the stakes and keep things fresh: there was never a single moment playing this where I got a bit bored due to the campaign continually going to new places, getting bigger in scale, and delivering all sorts of crazy and unique setpieces to mix things up. Speaking of setpieces, while I would usually disparage the kind of setpieces that take you away from the typical shooting gameplay (like Doom The Dark Ages' mecha/dragon levels) they were pulled off elegantly here and felt just as fun as everything else. In short, it's a fantastic game and a must-buy for any FPS aficionado in my book! There were a few issues that kept it from perfection for me: some confusing and wonky hitboxes here, some bad visual clarity there, but the biggest issue to me was how shallow and muted the soundscape was, where the lack of sound for enemy attacks in particular served to make combat quite frustrating at times since you could only rely on your eyes for information. Unfortunately, I feel like sound is a constantly overlooked art for indie devs, most likely due to its subtlety. Still, considering the small team who made it and the ridiculously cheap price for how much high-quality content it boasts, I'm willing to round up my score and still consider this a perfect 10.

A lot of work was put into this game, which makes it that much harder to not be able to reccommend it. First off, holy padding. More enemies do not mean more enjoyment. neither do timers, or gun restrictions. each level taking an hour or more to finish is wild. The credits look better than the whole game did Ammo starts out abundant, then becomes scarce, checkpoints are much to far in between platforming can be aggervating, with no way of knowing where to go sometimes But I can forgive all that What I cant forgive is the game breaking softlock in the final level of the game. In which, reloading a checkpoint didn't work, SO I had to replay the whole last level, for it to happen AGAIN. So, after playing the whole game on average joe (what a joke, an average player would get mopped in this difficulty) I had to change the last level to easy, and then finally for some reason it worked and the game stopped softlocking. Maybe with a ton of mod crammed in it would be more enjoyable, which is pretty sad. enemies are wildly unbalanced, as are some of the guns. When 18% of players are finishing the game, maybe your game needs work.

After falling in love with Ultrakill a couple of years back, a friend recommended Turbo Overkill to me, claiming that it is very similar to UItrakill. So i checked out the demo, liked what i played, and eventually got the full game. And then it sat in my backlog for a few years, before i finally decided to boot it up again and play through it. Now, it does have some similarities to Ultrakill, like being a boomer shooter, fast and precise movement, sliding, satisfying gunplay, a large weapon variation...but it isn't quite as good as Ultrakill, as Turbo Overkill has some major issues that drag it down. First, the humor, dialogue and voice acting. The humor and dialogue are very...marvel-ish, if that makes sense, with some pretty unpleasant one liners. Stuff like "Taste my bullets", or "You don't just kill, you Overkill" or "Let me try a new catchphrase: ♥♥♥♥ them up, sir" had me rolling my eyes quite a few times, and the voice acting can be pretty over the top as well. The Exec is the most annoying character, and i felt the strong desire to mute the game every time she opened her mouth. The visuals, while pretty, can become a bit bland after a while. It is mostly just your typical dystopian city with a bunch of neon lights and broken down buildings, which is not a bad style to go for, but it gets old fast. Sometimes there's some variation, like caves, factories, or scrap yards, but these locations aren't too visually exciting either. And you really do feel this visual repetition after a while, because, and this leads me to my biggest issue with this game... The levels. The levels are way, way too long. On average, every level took me between 20 - 35 minutes. I didn't really take my time to explore that much, nor did i die particularly often. These levels are long as ♥♥♥♥, and you really start to feel that, the further in you get into the game. Especially with the visual repetition. By the time i reached chapter 3 i was ready to be done with the game, as the levels just kept dragging on. Another issue that adds to this, is that levels don't really offer too much interesting platforming or puzzle solving, as you will spend most of your time fighting through waves of enemies. That isn't a bad thing at all, however, after a while these encounters start to feel quite repetitive as well. It mostly boils down to: Enter big room -> Enemies spawn -> Kill enemies -> More enemies spawn -> Kill enemies -> Repeat until the level is over. At first this is a lot of fun, especially since the gunplay feels fun and satisfying, and the chainsaw leg is a fun mechanic, but after a while you notice that most of these encounters feel very same-y, as you'll mostly just be dashing and sliding around big, empty rooms while you shoot at enemies you've seen countless times before. The enemy variety is not lackluster or anything, but it also isn't deep enough for a game this long. And since there is barely any encounters with unique gimmicks, they kinda start blending into one another. Sometimes there are sections where you can use a vehicle, which do shake things up a bit, but the gameplay in said vehicles mostly boils down to you just holding down the left mouse button, and obliterating anything that gets in your way. So they too get stale pretty quickly. Still, this game is nowhere near bad. It is also nowhere near as good as Ultrakill, but it is still a fun time, and anyone who likes games like Ultrakill and Doom should definitely consider checking it out. I recommend doing half a chapter per session, to avoid getting burned out quickly. 7,5 out of 10, closer to an 8 than a 7.

The most fun I've had with an FPS in a while. Excellent enemy design, I love the gnarly amalgamations of flesh and machine. Love how vibrant the colors are too, and that slight pixelation. The only problems I have are that there isn't quite enough feedback when shooting an enemy and the chainsaw leg kind of steals the show with how effective and fun it is. Fantastic game. Johnny had better return!

turbo overkill is...fine. everything you'd expect from a fast-paced boomer shooter. nice aesthetic, guns feel good to shoot, movement is perfect, over-the-top violent chaos... but theres not anything exceptional either. the story and setting are not really anything to write home about, the enemies are supposed to be a diverse lineup of threats but in practice you just fly around and shoot them until they die, and the game just feels unnecessarily long. says i have 12 hours and i did NOT finish the campaign. even after beating a boss that had ascended to near-Godhood with so many phases i lost count--theres still another level where i have to go flip 5 switches??? it just feels thin and stretched out and gets dull.
