I’m not a review writer, however, Twisted Tower nailed the pricing. At $15 brand new, the price sets the expectations, and I tend to be less critical. It was a no-brainer, so I bought it. It was even on sale, saved a dollar fifty. Good game. Imagine this vibe: remember when we had older game consoles, and you had your classic favorites, but you also had those filler games? You remember them fondly despite them not being perfect. You know the game has flaws, but you still like it. That’s what I think of this. It doesn't have many flaws, but it has a few big ones. It feels exactly like a long-lost Xbox 360 game I’m replaying. The environmental art is great, and that’s what made me play the whole thing. Smashing cameras, pumpkins, and enemies feels satisfying. If anything, this game attempts to max out on environmental vibe and game feel, seemingly at the expense of enemy combat and story. Regarding enemy combat: I’ve watched Thomas Brush’s YouTube channel on indie game dev, so I expected a bit more thought put into the actual combat mechanics. This game relies heavily on cheap kills. In games like Half-Life, BioShock, or even Cyberpunk, you might enter an overwhelming room, but you can spot explosive barrels or find a height advantage. You think about how to approach combat and strategize what weapons you will you and why. That’s great gameplay, you make decisions and sometimes restart a sequence just to execute the perfect play. Here, enemies spawn in waves, and they love to spawn right behind you. You walk into a room and get sniped in the back, forcing you to replay another 5-15 minutes just because of a cheap death. It's like old-school NES cruelty, enemies spawn in your blind spots and shoot you dead before you can even react. I was expecting the story to go all-out bonkers. I thought it would reveal that you are a psycho killer having a psychotic episode inside a normal hotel, you went postal, and because you fear clowns, then you become a clown. The monster thinking they're the hero, the hero fantasy getting undone. A real twist, kind of like the reverse of the Little Sisters gameplay from BioShock 2. But here... it’s just some dude proposing to his sister. The story is just okay. So, what do I rate this? It's worth skipping lunch and bringing something from home to eat at work so you can buy and play it, assuming you are completely out of games to play because you already beat the best ones. It’s not going to be your favorite, but it won’t be your least favorite either. I rate this above a casual restaurant meal, but less than BioShock 2. You figure out what that means to you.

So I learned something about myself while playing this game: I really cannot be trusted with a mallet. I can and will whack everything in sight to see if it breaks and gives me tickets. Balloons? They pop. Crates? They break. Grandfather clock? Shatters. Carousel horses? They make a very sad neighing sound as you demolish them and their brethren. Cameras? Some guy will yell at you for breaking them because they’re “important.” Okay, well are they more important than me walloping in the name of science? NO, NO THEY’RE NOT. Anyway, getting into the actual review. I think the game started off strong. The visuals and scenery are great, the location is fun and campy. There's a LOT of weapons that you uncover along they way and most are familiar with a twist, but there are a few unique weapons as well you don't see often. The enemies have a cool look, the environments are fun to navigate with light puzzling, you can unlock a couple extra perks like being able to jump larger distances. But all that being said, I do feel like this game started to drag in the second half. And this is a short experience, so that's not a good thing. Steam clocks me at 9ish hours, but at least a couple of those were me idling because that's a thing I do, so I'd say I spent 6-7 hours actually playing. And a lot of that was just me smashing unnecessary ♥♥♥♥ with the mallet. Anyway, my point is that a short game should not drag at any point. But it started to feel repetitive, and the enemy variety is limited. There were a lot of weapons, but you could easily get by using just the mallet for most of the time if you wanted. There was very little challenge; I played on normal difficulty and never felt like I was seriously low on healing or ammo, and enemies go down pretty easily. I felt like the final boss was really just tedious and annoying. The story is fine but the ending was really 'meh.' The jet pack, which is the final perk you can unlock, is really underwhelming. I think the game had some fun ideas, but by the end I was pretty over it. The visuals and theme are doing a lot of heavy lifting here, while the gameplay itself is not that deep. It is intriguing that future runs will have new paths to explore, but I'm not running to replay. On a smaller note, I don't love that I had to go to the forums to find out that AI was used. The developer makes it clear that AI wasn't used in the visuals or music or voice acting, thankfully, but apparently was still used during the coding process. I guess that makes it something Steam doesn't require disclosure for, and I'm not a fan of that. I think there are of course different scales to AI usage, and I'd rather find out that AI was used for coding instead of the graphics or music or voices, but I don't support the use of AI and I might have avoided the game if I'd known before buying. But that's also on me for not doing a deeper dive. All in all, I think this is a game I'd give a neutral score to if that was an option. Since it's not, I'll give the game a thumbs up because despite the flaws, I think I enjoyed a good chunk of the experience.

If I could leave a mixed review, that's what I would do instead. TLDR: The game has a great Willy Wonka/Disneyland-style setting, fun gadgets, decent enemy variety, and an interesting-enough story that kept me mostly engaged. However, the combat lacks impact, several weapons feel unnecessary, and the constant enemy gauntlets quickly become repetitive, especially with the lack of proper boss fights. The soundtrack and voice acting are generally good, while the protagonist’s dialogue doesn’t always match the seriousness of the situation, and the music, although good, often feels too intense for smaller encounters. The ending also felt somewhat anticlimactic. I think for what it is, at the asking price, it's probably worth it for most people. Would I buy it again if I had my current knowledge of the game? Probably not. Do I want a refund? Not really. I don't feel like my time was wasted. Pros: • The Willy Wonka/Disneyland-style theme worked really well. • The gadgets you acquire throughout the game were fun to use and felt relevant to each area. I only wish there had been a little more backtracking, where you could return to earlier areas and hunt for secrets after unlocking new tools. That said, I understand that isn't really the kind of game it's trying to be. Mixed: • There was a good variety of weapons, but I feel like some of them were added as filler just so the player had something else to collect. For example, the Tommy Gun and the Gumball Gun (can't remember the actual names) handle pretty much the same. The same goes for the Marble Pistol and the Slingshot, as well as the Pump Shotgun and the Double Barrel. • The combat was okay, but the weapons lacked weight in the way they handled. As a result, combat never felt particularly satisfying or impactful. • I think the enemy variety was pretty decent, but there weren't really any proper boss fights aside from the one at the very end, which is a big shame. The whole game is essentially a series of gauntlets where you're locked into a room and forced to fight groups of enemies. Every enemy type you encounter gets reused over and over from the moment they're introduced, which means none of them really stand out, even though they look and behave fairly differently from one another. • The soundtrack was pretty good for the most part. Something that stood out to me however, was how as soon as a combat sequence was triggered, the music instantly went from 0 to 100. A lot of the time you're only fighting one to three enemies, yet the same intense music plays regardless of what or how many enemies you're fighting. Because of that, the music didn't always match the intensity or mood of what was actually happening. • The story was intriguing enough to keep me going, but I found the ending a bit anticlimactic and disappointing. About halfway through the game, my theory was that it was going to be a Shutter Island-type situation where it turned out that you were actually insane and/or had been the bad guy all along and had somehow set the whole thing up yourself. The game seemed to be pointing in that direction with some of the hints in the dialogue, and even though that might have been more predictable, I still think it would have made for a better ending in hindsight. Instead, it felt kind of random when it was revealed that Mr. Twister is actually your dad, your whole family was somehow in on everything, and your girlfriend was actually your sister (or at least I think that's what happened? I may have misunderstood that part), which was especially weird since they were both present in some of the tape recordings. • There is some replayability due to the fact that there are multiple "paths" through the game, with half of them locked during your first playthrough. That being said, there isn't much incentive to actually replay it. I'm pretty sure there's only one ending, and the secret areas essentially boil down to "you found ammo" or "you found tickets," so there isn't much worth hunting for. The only real reason to replay the game is if you really want to hunt all of the achievements. Cons: • Probably my biggest gripe with the game is the way a lot of the story is delivered through voiced-over letters, newspapers, and tape machines. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but the problem is that you're forced to either stand there and listen until the dialogue is over or skip it altogether. It would have been much better if you could continue exploring and playing while the dialogue was happening. • Although the voice acting was pretty good, I feel like some of the writing and direction for the main character was a bit odd, and at times even annoying. The protagonist feels strangely disconnected from the situation he's in. He's scaling this dilapidated theme park tower and killing waves of enemies while trying to rescue his girlfriend, who has been kidnapped by some psychopathic circus guy... but he doesn't really seem to care. Instead, he's cracking one-liners after combat encounters and reminiscing about his past while reading letters along the way. It feels like the sort of situation where the character should come across as much more serious, frightened, or emotionally invested.

A solid linear shooter with an ending so offensively bad it managed to undo all of the goodwill the game was building. Thomas Brush can certainly design a game, but he can't write a script to save his life.

While I’m on an hiatus from writing reviews… this at least deserves a quick “hell yeah” recommendation from me! I popped in to just check it out, and got sucked in for over three hours. Before bed, of all times, and now my heart is racing too much to fall asleep. >.> I’ve completed the Hotel floor of the tower, and am maybe halfway through the Mermaid floor. I think if you’re really taking your time, you could probably get about ten hours out of a single playthrough, as I think there are five sprawling floors to explore, plus the lobby, which contains its own challenges, and some secret areas. There are three difficulty levels though, so there is plenty of replayability, as the game notes explain that the tower labyrinth changes a little on each playthrough. The setting here is incredibly immersive. I feel TRAPPED in this fun house. I’ve seen the Bioshock-vibe comparisons, and yeah, if you’re nostalgic for that off-kilter 1950’s decopunk aesthetic, you’ll love this. The voice acting is excellent. The music complements the unsettling vibes, and I’ve noticed it subtly changing when I enter spaces. The exploration is a lot of fun, with small rewards around every corner, and new mechanics that emerge (such as swimming during the Mermaid floor). You get to play with a variety of weapons (and at least one tool I’ve so far unlocked) that are drip-fed to you. My go-to has been just wailing on everyone with my upgraded mallet. But I’m becoming fond of the guns, and better at switching amongst them during combat. The enemies are all well-designed, with their own attack abilities, and great at providing the jump scares to get your cardio workout in for the night. :) And it’s not just jump-scares. There’s an actual story you’re slowly uncovering as you explore the tower, with bits of lore (letters, newspaper articles), which enriches the whole experience. And someone to rescue, so you have a sense of purpose! I was cozy-gaming a bit of Elden Ring before checking out Twisted Tower tonight. And while I have a combined 250+ hours in Elden Ring across various platforms … let’s just say that I’m playing Twisted Tower on Fairytale difficulty (easiest) and died a comparable number of times to my brief time revisiting Elden Ring tonight. XD Twisted Tower isn’t for the faint of heart! Probably I just suck though, tbh. I was cursing alone in my dark room during one scenario (“Where is that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clown with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ machine gun?! Die you ♥♥♥♥—ahhhh nooooo—♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥...”) that was anything but fairytale-like, as I was being clobbered by waves of enemies in a gigantic multi-level room, spinning and running in circles, trying to locate from where the creepy voices were coming before they found me first. I eventually cheesed it by hiding in a single corner and smashing them all to bits as they walked into my “trap.” Work smarter, not harder y’all!! :) There are a few timed challenges that are hair-pulling, such as cranking open a door in another room that then slowly shuts again while you frantically try to backtrack through some winding rooms and traps before it closes. I may also have run into a timed grappling challenge of a similar nature before closing the game a bit ago. If you are easily frustrated by this sort of thing, just beware! I wonder if the timed puzzle elements like that could benefit from a patch that extends lengths of time in Fairytale mode, as the timer seems set right down to the wire in my opinion. “Getting good” with blasting through enemies is fun, I think. But I can’t personally say the same for repeating the timed find-your-way-here-quickly challenges. That said, I think I’ve only run into a couple of these that gave me the “ugh” factor. I’m playing in a handheld (Lenovo Legion Go with SteamOS) and it’s flawless. I have all graphics on ultra, though my Legion is the Z1 Extreme Chip model, and that chip does a lot of heavy lifting. If you’re on Deck, the dev created a default Deck graphics setting, which is a nice touch. Highly recommended for Spooky Season, for anyone who already has FPS experience, for people who love jump scares, and for everyone who appreciates this mid-century funhouse aesthetic. It’s an extremely well-crafted game by a solo dev (mind-blowing) at a steal of a price. I could see this as being an annual Halloween tradition for people, to make their way through the Twisted Tower each Spooky Season. Especially if the dev is able to create paid dlc that adds more floors!
