I just finished the game and... I'M CRYING A RIVER RIGHT NOW! T_T The game itself is simple and the gameplay even more so. But its pretty and the story... MY GOODNESS, the story is so beautiful and so incredibly sad. Like, WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?! T_T I mean... I swear I was literally sobbing moments before I started writing this review lol. I tried to save him until third loop, until I finally had to accept that maybe... I was the problem. Until I changed my mind again ... From around the 7th loop onward, I just started crying and by the ??? loop, I was sobbing and that music did NOT help me at all! T_T I also have to give a huge shoutout to Marina Ryan, Jason Cura and ENDYSIS! The music really added so much to the experience that I wanted to add that song to my Spotify playlist, but I couldn't find it! Hahaha Congratulations on the game and thank you for making it. <3 It genuinely made me realize that sometimes, no matter how hard we try to change or improve a situation, the only thing we can do is accept it how it is and move on. And apparently cry a whole damn river while doing it lol

BRO I JUST UGLY CRIED THROUGH THIS WHOLE THING 😭😭😭 I didn't realize this is now the second game I've played from this developer and I cant wait to check out the next one! I never write reviews but I had to for this, if you enjoy art of having an author shatter your heart with their honeyed words then this is for you! The story is beautifully written and does an amazing job bringing you through to the end 10/10

Unquiet Grey is a short visual novel that caught me off guard with how quickly it gets into some pretty heavy ideas. I wake up beside a road with a headache and a stranger's jacket, then find an ID belonging to a man I do not recognise. Things get even stranger when I find a phone showing an older version of myself with him. From there the story becomes a romance mixed with a time loop, grief and a mystery that keeps pulling me further in. I like that the game gets to the point quickly instead of spending ages explaining everything. The time loop is easily my favourite part. I keep coming back to the same person and the same basic situation, but knowing that things are not going to play out normally gives the relationship a different feeling. The story is not really about trying to solve some huge science fiction mystery either. It is much more focused on the people involved and what it means to keep meeting someone when I already know there is something painful waiting ahead. That makes the romance feel more important than the actual time travel idea. The artwork is another big strength for me. The illustrations are hand drawn and have a really soft style that suits the emotional side of the story. I especially like how the characters are presented during the more personal scenes because the artwork gives them much more personality than simple character sprites would. There is also a camera mode that lets me look at the artwork more closely, which is a nice little extra. The soundtrack works well too, with soft guitar and indie rock giving the story a quiet atmosphere without constantly trying to tell me how I should feel. The biggest problem is the length. The main story is around an hour and has a little over 11,000 words, so I can get through it pretty quickly. I actually think the short length suits the story in some ways because it keeps the focus tight, but I still finished wanting more time with the characters. The game has a few choices and the time loop gives the story some replay value, but this is still a very small visual novel rather than something I can spend dozens of hours exploring. I think a little more character development would have made the emotional parts hit even harder. I also think the story is quite dependent on me being interested in emotional romance. There is not much traditional gameplay here, and I am mostly reading, making occasional choices and watching the story unfold. That is completely fine for what the game is trying to be, but I would not want to judge it like a normal adventure game. The appeal comes from the writing, artwork and atmosphere. Some of the darker themes are also pretty serious, including grief, alcoholism, underage drinking and an implied suicide, so this is definitely not as light hearted as the cute artwork might initially suggest. What helps a lot is that the main game is free. I do not have to spend anything to experience the full story, and there is optional extra content in the form of a B Side booklet and soundtrack for anyone who wants more. I appreciate that approach because the short length would make a paid price harder for me to justify. Here, I can simply sit down, play through the story and decide afterwards whether I want to support the developer or look into the extra material. Overall, Unquiet Grey is a short but genuinely affecting visual novel that does a lot with its limited length. I like the time loop idea, the relationship at the centre of the story, the hand drawn artwork and the soft soundtrack, and I think the emotional themes give it more weight than I expected. The lack of gameplay and very short runtime stop it from reaching the higher ratings I give to much larger visual novels, but I do not think it needs to be a huge game to work. For me, it is best treated as a focused little story that I can finish in one sitting and still think about afterwards. Rating: 7.2/10
