Great tactical turn-based RPG game. Love it, and have always appreciated the Valkyria Chronicles and game series. Highly recommend the game for all the things you will explore with this, the amount of hours you will play, and the amount of time you will enjoy it. Only downside to this game and the prime reason for a negative review, Denuvo. While this game, and SEGA keeps using Denuvo, I will not be recommending those games while Denuvo is still in use.

Genuinely an improvement over VC1. It's very rare that I disagree with popular criticisms of a game but this really is better than the first - longer, too.

I'll start with the negatives, as they all happen at first, but let me just say that the game is very good despite these early flaws! Before the game starts, you'll maybe face the first problem. It won't start. After checking the discussions, I saw thats a problem thats been present from the start. Lots of potential fixes later, the last comment I found fixed it for me. You simply unplug your controller, start the game and it suddenly works. After that you plug your controller back in and can play. I've never seen that happen until now over hundreds of games... I also wanted to play the game in japanese, but the japanese version uses the japanese buttonlayout. You can remap the buttons, but you can NOT remap the menu controls. Thats a very weird choice imo. So instead, I played it in english, because the western buttonlayout has accept on the bottom and cancel on the right, just how I'm used to. Wouldn't have been hard to make it an option aswell. 3rd problem comes from me playing my games in windowed mode. Very often I tab out by pressing the windows key while doing that. However here, your cursor stays stuck in the games screen. You HAVE to alt-tab to get your cursor out of it. So I am either forced to play borderless fullscreen or can only get out of the screen by actually alt tabbing. Usually games let you just move your cursor out once you're in a menu, or make it a setting. When tabbed out, the game doesn't mute either, that should also be the case or at least be a setting to change. The first game did all that better, it did not support japanese menus and subtitles, only voicelines, but due to the problems, this game is essentially the same for me there. Thats 4 things the first game did better before I even really started playing. Anyway, now for the actual review of the game itself! You do have settings to make enemy turns faster and the general feel on the maps is faster aswell. The tank is much better than the previous game, as it doesn't use up 2 action moves anymore but instead has ammo. You can equip small items for boosts to each individual character and have a lot more variety on the different missions for the same maps. That makes every mission worth playing, as different parts of a map will be blocked off depending on the mission or you start on the other side of the map instead of replaying the exact same thing. You can also replay story missions immediately now aswell if you want to get better ranks and do not have to wait until new game+ like in the first game. Ranks are still solely dependant on how quick you are however. I personally would prefer it if it was about how little damage you took, or how many enemies you cleared, as with the ranking system solely relying on speed, you can skip half the map, running straight to the points you need in order to win the map. It doesn't feel right to have cleared a map to get the highest rank, but still have an army of enemies staying right besides you and having the story be like "hell yeah we got all of them!" no you didn't lol. Generally the gameplay feels a lot smoother and fleshed out than in the first game, definitely an improvement. But some walls still have a much larger hitbox than they actually look like. I was shooting against invisible walls multiple times. On the plus side, you have a ton of options to do things. Want to get a unit that can't run very far much further ahead? There are multiple options helping you to achieve that. The new grenadier class is also an extremely good addition to the game imo! Personally, I was not that big of a fan of the story though, but thats pretty much the only downside the game itself has. I had a lot of fun completing all missions on A rank! (or S rank if you play in japanese)

Where to begin with VC4...It's a tough one to recommend but also harsh not to. Coming from VC1, what we have here is the exact same gameplay, which is a plus, but a vastly inferior story and story telling. Huge emphasis on the latter because for 80% of the game, the story was padded and disoriented and quite frankly...boring. The last 20% is VC at its best with great moments and focused story telling. If only the whole game was this focused, this would have been a great game. Gameplay wise, even though it's the same, the difficulty here is mostly artificial with mediocre stage design. Most missions rely on dashing through with a scout to get it done quick to receive an A rank. For the most part, the game is on the easy side with the exception of the bosses that show up in some missions and just dash through your squad while having the potential to 1 shot anyone. You are then left wondering how its even fair but a few reloads and some luck and you'll get through. Speaking of reloading, you can save many times mid mission so you can test whatever strategy you want without worrying too much about failure. Definitely a plus in my books. Characters and VA were mostly average except a few standout characters that I really liked/loved. I didn't care about the protagonist though, unlike in VC1. Music was on the decent side although it was amazing for like 1 scene and then back to just decent. Not bad but not great either. All in all, if you like strategy games, there is a good chance you'll like this one, but there's a bigger chance you'll get bored to death by how slow and uninteresting the story telling is for the most part. However, if you stick with it, you are in for a great finale. It won't hit you like VC1, not even close, but it's still memorable. TLDR: Good gameplay brought down by uninspired mission design and terrible story telling for the most part. Story itself is interesting but the way it's told is definitely not. Final Score: 6.5/10

putting aside the fact that i bought vc4 before playing vc1 and subsequently not loving that game and by proxy not very much enjoying this one, i'm giving it a thumbs down because it's a nightmare to get it to work correctly. for some forsaken reason, there's issues with inputs (and i am not alone with this) where it will just scroll through menus endlessly. obviously this does not affect everyone but i cannot in good faith recommend a game that has such a weird, glaring issues affecting people that will never get patched.
