Valkyria Chronicles Remastered

Follow my curator page for more recommendations! Overall this is definitely worth playing even though it has some rough spots and doesn't really make use of all its pieces to its full potential, which makes the disappointment I felt in VC4 all the worse. I want to say this is a unique sort of experience though I haven't played many tactics games so I can't say for sure. The main appeal here is you aren't constrained to a grid, you do movement in real time and then aim a shot at an enemy. Maps are pretty big and the lack of info on the command map and enemies being obscured until you spot them makes it so you have to scout around and figure things out in match. Due to the larger size of the maps though, and most victory conditions involving you moving deep into it to capture a base or destroy a thing it opens up some design and class issues. So each class has a set movement points value, scouts being the highest and snipers being the lowest. You can use a unit multiple times in a row but their movement points get reduced each time as does their ammo so it has a soft limit on what you can do. Problem is, the movement economy doesn't really work, I pretty much never used the shocktroopers (full auto class) because they had really low movement points AND low range with their weapon. This means that for an enemy thats a decent distance away, you could use a scout and move to kill them in 1 turn due to high movement points and able to engage further out with a rifle. Whereas it would take the shocktrooper 2 turns, despite them being billed as the forward rushing assault class. They have higher damage but if you are keeping up with weapon upgrades etc pretty much any class can solo kill any enemy infantry if you get close and headshot them. Because of this, and many victory conditions just being to cap a base, and the rating and reward system tied to finishing in shortest amount of turns, it really incentivizes you to push a skeleton crew forward and take enemies out with solo leapfrog movements. Leaving a handful of units stuck at base because by the mid match point even if you wanted those units to fight it would cost many turns to move them up so you just continue over extending the units already at the frontlines. This kinda throws out some other gameplay elements, like you can have nearby allies combo attack with you for extra damage. But this is pretty much never useful because you can already solo kill any infantry unless you wanna try to line up some clutch multikill of enemies in a line. Only exception to this is enemies that are crouching in cover get an insane damage reduction but it still doesn't make sense to combined assault them as it would take 2 turns to move both allies in same as just using a grenade then following up with gunfire from a single unit. The crouching buff also sucks because it doesn't matter if you flank the enemy as long as they are crouching they get the full buff along with the physical cover the sandbags are providing from frontal fire. Most stages are setup in a way that you aren't doing much defending positions so setting up well designed defenses doesn't come into play often. And this is where most of the fault lies I think. All the pieces are here to have good tactics and decision making but the stages are too boring in their design it ends up playing pretty straight most of the time, where you spend a very low amount of time figuring things out and a long time actually executing. Low cerebral density if you will. There also isn't much in the way of dynamic things that can happen, enemies may dodge and cost you another turn to kill them, or map conditions may change which can be a bit of a gotcha depending on how you positioned to win the first conditions given. What this means is things are good when you make it out alive despite things not going in your favor or expectations, but if you fail a mission due to this it REALLY sucks. The missions are long and replaying it, you know all the surprise moments and how to optimize around enemy spawns so it is ENTIRELY going through the motions with no difficulty. All said though, this is the first game in the series so I can't be too harsh. But VC4 has a lot of these same issues so viewing it as a whole its disappointing that there doesn't seem to be a fully realized version of this formula. Story is good, nothing wild for the setting. Its what you expect with a squad war story, you'll get attached to the characters both the main characters in cutscenes and the superficial but endearing personalities that the lesser units have just by using them over tens of hours. Theres a little romance, some sad moments and all wraps up nicely. But due to gameplay critiques it all feels a little strained in the enjoyment vs hour ratio. There are side battles and extra episodes you can do, I didn't feel very compelled to do these. PC port is alright, no borderless so you'll need a program for that. No mouse movement in the menus but they are pretty responsive using wasd to navigate and left click to confirm. One stage late in the game has something you can't move past without capping the framerate (I did 30) capping via rivatuner doesn't seem to work, gotta do it through the game config. Tanks also control like a walrus on rollerskates, probably also due to FR not sure. Unfortunately this is one of those series that got disrupted by putting half the entries on portable consoles. Hopefully there is a VC5 someday and they do a bigger revision of core gameplay.

If you told me even a couple years ago that I'd fall in love with an anime-ified spin on a WW2 tactics game, I'd ask what the hell you're smoking and then ask for a hit of it after. It sounds quite ludicrous when worded like that. And yet, here I am writing a review for Valkyria Chronicles. My god, this game is incredible. I was already a sucker for tactics games, but Valkyria implements plenty of unique designs and changes to the tactics formula that help it stand out as a crown jewel among its peers. It's easily worth the $22 CAD asking price, and then some. I haven't finished playing the game yet (doing chapter 10 right now), but I needed to get out all my thoughts on this masterpiece Where other tactic games keep you held up high in the air as an omniscient commander guiding your units' every move, VC opts to introduce a new element: letting the player take direct control of the character. Instead of watching a unit move to a spot of your choosing, you gotta guide them yourself! Dodging everything manually, free from the limitations of a grid-based movement system. Of course, that also allows VC to incorporate real time hazards into the mix. Suddenly, staying out of range of units isn't enough. Trying to run by an enemy, god forbid a tank of some kind, will get you shot a LOT. Potentially fatally if you're not crouched behind cover. And watch your feet for trip mines or other hazards. And if a character falls in combat, and you can't rescue them, they're gone forever. The game has a master list of recruits to choose from so you're not left struggling for your life with the few "mandatory" units at your disposal, but the new recruits may not always be good as the previous soldiers you were used to... You can abuse the real-time systems against the enemies as well, but they can really ♥♥♥♥ you up if you play carelessly. You can mitigate bad decisions or empower good ones with orders as well, such as damage increases, immediate healing, or sniper fire, to really integrate the player into the combat space as a commander. It just feels... right. The developers had a vision, and they capitalized on that vision masterfully. You don't just feel like an observer, you feel like a true combatant in the war. Presentation is really stand-out and one of the main attractions to the game. It isn't entirely unfair to call the visual design of Valkyria Chronicles a work of art. The main menu where you can engage with each scene and battle scenario is formatted like a war journal or something in that vein, and a lot of the game is presented with a very scratchy, water-colored aesthetic to it (which is quite fitting with Welkin as a main character due to his artistic skill). The whole game is framed as this retelling of the war, only captured through photos, sketches and old battle maps. Although, there are moments where the presentation can falter randomly. Janky animations that take you out of the scene when a character does an action and then snaps back to an idle position. But instances like that are few and far between, and they do little to really harm the overall visual masterclass that is VC. The story and setting is where this game rocks the most. Despite the game's occasional light tone and jovial moments, it does not shy away from exposing the true horrors of a mass scale war. Senseless killing, destruction, subterfuge, uprooting the lives of many ordinary people who just wanted to be in peace. Soldiers come together out of pure necessity, not out of any true passion to fight for their country. That ragtag feeling is one of Valkyria Chronicles' greatest strengths, as the characters are immensely relatable for just being average people. There are elements of crazy super-soldiers or legendary heroes or whatever in the story, but you will notice the severe lack of OP firepower as the game processes. Your team is just a group of regular people forced to fight a war heavily skewed against them. Even with some characters boasting accolades and parental fame behind them, they are barely a step above the regular riff-raff. The way this story meshes with the gameplay is why I love VC so much The audio mixing is one of the weaker aspects of the game, as sad as it is to say. One such part that I have issue with is the voice acting, which is rather hit or miss. In some cases, you have people like Laura Bailey voice acting Isara, and that's pretty good. But then some characters like many of the recruit units have some pretty awkward and unnatural dialogue. It was as if the dubbers were told to spit everything out as quick as possible, with no natural flow into new lines. Either that, or the dubbers weren't directed on what emotion to inject into a scene, leaving characters talking way too calmly given the circumstances. Another issue that is totally just a nitpick is the sound effects for the weapons of war being rather weak and flimsy. The audio (and especially the music) can be really good at times, but its something I've noted as a bit of a failing. Still, considering that this is maybe the biggest detractor from Valkyria Chronicles, speaks volumes about how quality this game is. One other issue that I think needs mention enough for its own little section. There is this... bug? I've only encountered it after tabbing out and tabbing back in, but the game animations seem to slow down. Like, everything is clearly playing at a slower speed than intended, while the audio plays back at normal speed. In a menu or dialogue, its not that serious. In gameplay, it slows everything down to a crawl. It becomes way harder to play the game. I don't know if this is a me problem or what, but its something to keep in mind. No alt-tabbing if you want to avoid this. I always fear that I'm too positive in a lot of my reviews. Maybe it's because I can see the intent or good aspects of bad systems, or I'm not as hung up on smaller failings or whatever. I'm not really sure. But man, Valkyria Chronicles is a game that I have nothing but praise to shower it in. It can have an occasional hiccup or two, but this game is otherwise one of the best tactics game's I've ever played. I know this is just a remaster of the original PS3 title, and maybe its a worse product compared to that original version. But as someone who is completely uninitiated, I feel like this is a great entry point

Well... What can I say? Good old Valkyrie still has plenty of fire left in her belly. As usual, the introduction sets the tone with just a couple of sentences that give the reader some basci info. In short: It’s a great game for fans of Japanese tactical games and themes. The graphics leave something to be desired, the translation is terrible, and there are some questionable aspects… However, Valkyria still deserves at least an 8 out of 10 for its unique gameplay mechanics and a pretty strong storyline. More: Actually… For those thinking about playing this game for the first time, all I can suggest is to check out the gameplay videos and screenshots. Most likely, after that, you’ll be able to tell whether it’s worth playing for you spesialy. Be that as it may, on sale, this game is worth every coin you spend on it — you can be sure 100% of that. Next, let’s get the worst parts out of the way. Just three points. First, the translation. The classic, poor American translation from Japanese reaches the height of its absurdity here. Of course, the meaning is rarely lost… But when they translate “uh-huh” as “thank you”… That’s a pain for any linguist. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg… Second, the same flaw that was present during my first playthrough remains. It’s a major problem in many games: Im talking about characters that can’t hit their target's at point-blank range. In Valkyria, this feels twice as bad, since—relatively speaking—we improve our “accuracy” as we progress through the game. Even with maximum accuracy, though, some characters still miss. It’s annoying. And they do that A LOT. Third, the final boss—as well as some other battles—remains extremely... challenging when it comes to figuring out “the best way to defeat it.” Unfortunately, tactics don’t play much of a role when you earn the most resources based on speed. Casualties, captured camps, defeated enemies, and so on simply don’t count. Speed and intuition—plus a little experience—are what lead to victory. Personally, even on my second playthrough, I caught myself thinking that the gameplay would be a bit more interesting with a different scoring system, at the very least... But as it is... An experienced commander floods a scout with defense and attack orders, and the scout races off to capture the enemy’s main camp in 1–5 turns... Here you go. A. Max mobey and exp for your sqad. Luckly game quite often tells you that you CANT do that. That scout may be good...But nope. Use some brains. Now for the good stuff. This game is far from being one of my favorites, mainly because it’s incredibly linear and lacks depth, and yet... It has some nice things I do apriciate. Many modern (and perhaps even older) games can only envy such stuff like decent romantic, story and engaging gameplay. There’s a wonderful sense of realism here that works surprisingly well even for a game rated 12+. Didn’t save a soldier? He dies in a dramatic way and can’t return to battle. What’s more, after being wounded, a soldier remains on the battlefield for up to three rounds; if an ally finds him, a medic saves him, but if an enemy finds him, he dies. This mechanic may seem small and insignificant, but it’s still original and gives The Chronicles a special charm that, I must admit, I haven’t seen anywhere else. The story itself touches the player with its classic setting, where a dispute over land leaves ordinary civilians to suffer the consequences. The male protagonist, who dreamed of becoming a teacher, becomes a commander in an effort to protect his home, while the female protagonist, who dreamed of baking bread, becomes a scout with an ancient power within her... To say more would be to spoil the story. But be that as it may, many of the setbacks faced by the 7th Squad (the main characters) can be attributed precisely to this aspect. They are barely trained soldiers who are forced to fight without any real desire to do so... As for the gameplay, Commander Velkin plays the central role by managing operations, controlling the tank, and issuing the right orders at the right time. The turn-based system adds a great deal of realism to this process, as the most influential command takes up nearly half of the action points. This is an extremely important resource when your soldiers’ stamina is severely limited. Essentially, if you make a mistake, you’ll pay dearly for it. Just like in life. Just like in chess. Just like on the front lines. Think first, act after. Don’t make the same mistake's twice. Of course, you can get around all of this if you choose the “easy” difficulty setting. Brains off - just shoot stuff and enjoy the stroy. What do we have to wrap things up? The verdict? The verdict is pretty obvious. "Chronicles of Valkyrie" is a Japanese strategy game that’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t mind this genre or style. It drags on a bit, but it wraps up at just the right time—and you’ll forget how long it is if you play one chapter a day or so. A seven-month span flies by in a couple of weeks, and you’re left with a pretty substantial journey that, despite all its flaws, you’ll want to continue… to improve… And no, the ending here is more than decent; it’s just a shame that the "Chronicles 4" turned out to be an order of magnitude worse, as far as I recall. I might replay it later on but...Yeah. If you finished game with the "right" feeling you do understand me. It is a...unique feeling to say at least. And Val sure have it for you at the end. Of course, we could go on and on about the snipers who miss their shots, the helpless engineers, or how unfair the victory conditions are... Win with 24 people when the enemy has endless reinforcements, for example... But all of that is just trivial. Trivialities of an old game, trivialities of the unfairness of the world, and trivialities of old artificial intelligence that sought only one thing. To entertain you with a good game and a good story. And anyway, even the world’s last remaining romantic would admit that protagonists who’ve supported each other through the fires of war — doesn’t just sound cool. It is strong stuff. At the end of a day Valkyrie Chronicles is far from perfect. It’s not a masterpiece. But it’s a game that stands so firmly at an 8 that sometimes you want to give it a 9. If all games in our world were of its quality, it would be a different world. Doesn’t that sound good enough for you to try it out? Overall Rating: 8/10 System Requirements: Potato Gameplay: Good Voice Acting: Excellent (Japanese) Bugs: Barely noticeable Story: 8/10 Graphics: Good for veterans, terrible for younger players Grind: Minimal Difficulty: Above average Length: Above average

So they advise you to take soldiers out and place them at further bases except you can't extract your soldier unless they touch a base. And they advise snipers in a position you can't move them to get to a base! Wow how thought out! Oh but it gets better! A mission where you can only use the trenches but wait! you can't shoot from the trenches :) wow this is so much fun

I liked most of the story, aside from a few things that didn't make that much sense. I liked the characters of your squad and I like the way you play on the map. It did take some getting used to, as I have not played any game like this before. To me however, the game would be hella annoying, if it didn't let you save during a mission. I basically had to save after every turn, because you sometimes just can't tell how things would play out, the mechanic decides to repair a barricade behind you instead of disarming the mine in front of you, or suddenly a characters aim is way off and misses a shot he should hit 99% of the time and missing it screws your entire turn over. So it has its quirks, but because you can save, you can save yourself a lot of headaches by just slamming save as much as you can. Are you supposed to play a game this way? Maybe not, but if I feel like a game is playing against the player randomly, its the only saving grace. Most of the time it functions fine though, if you weren't able to save whenever you want however, I wouldn't have finished this game. Since you can, I quite enjoyed the story and liked figuring out how everything is supposed to play out. Though sometimes you face enemy tank positions that feel like are "impossible" to clear without tanking some damage willingly. They have their weakpoints on their back, so the game often wants you to hit that to clear them. Not always, but if you try to take it out from the front, it takes several moves. It also ranks how well you did and the lower number of turns you needed, the better your rank... which means, it wants you to figure out the fastest, not the safest solution. This contradicts itself imo. None the less, I enjoyed it enough that I am looking forward to playing Valkyria Chronicles 4! Btw. you can put a ton more hours into this game if you want. You unlock a lot of stuff after finishing and there are more difficulty settings added for every mission and you gain the ability to replay story missions to get better ranks aswell. If I had this game in my youth, I probably would have grinded the hell out of it to complete it all.

the game starts interestingly enough, has a cool premise, and in theory, nice gameplay; unfortunately after a few missions it turns frustratingly difficult, forcing you to clear the missions the way it wants, and pulling new rules outta it's ass, eating away all fun it previously introduced. I like the aesthetics, graphics, and music.
