Vivid/Stasis

1 / 8

If Steam reviews had an “It depends” option, I would choose it over my choice here. I used to recommend this game to many of my peers a while back, and while some did enjoy the game, others did not. Personally, I had a very good experience playing this game (hence my recommendation), but players will have different experiences depending on their dedication and mindset going into it. This game has a very specific audience, and if you fall under its niches, I think you’ll have a great time. Otherwise, this game may not be for you. You will probably enjoy playing vivid/stasis if: [*]You enjoy both playing rhythm games and reading visual novels [*]You enjoy puzzles but do not mind looking up what to do every once in a while [*]You enjoy media that is not particularly fixed on any one genre [*]You are not photosensitive, and are okay with feeling overwhelmed at times [*]You are not a dead-set completionist (some unlocks may take tens or hundreds of hours) [*]You have some background experience in 4-key, vertical-scrolling rhythm games [*]You are okay with experiencing very tough charts for the sake of game progression (you cannot “fail” them, but they can get overwhelming) [*]Most importantly, you are okay with playing an indie game that has some hiccups along the way I believe the best audience is aspiring rhythm gamers who want to improve their skills, who would also enjoy reading a self-aware mystery story that unfolds through your actions, something akin to OneShot. You will probably NOT enjoy playing vivid/stasis if: [*]You want to go into this game 100% blind, with no outside help whatsoever [*]You are familiar with many rhythm games and are offput by the differences that vivid/stasis introduces (e.g., increased timing windows, “bumper notes”, modcharts) [*]You do not enjoy “grinding” for unlocks [*]You are playing on a low-end computer [*]This is your first rhythm game, ever (flexible, but generally) [*]You intend to play custom-made content (because there is none; see Haljimeli Modding Policy) Overall, I would still recommend at least trying out vivid/stasis, mainly because it’s free to play, and there are already many positive reviews of this game. Playing the first couple chapters should give you an idea of what the game is like. If you end up enjoying the story but not the gameplay, you are free to watch a video of it on Youtube. If you end up not playing vivid/stasis at all, I would still recommend looking into Hajimeli’s upcoming rhythm game, polymorphite.

I usually don't tend to write reviews on any product or game for this matter before I finish all the achievements and do (most of the) things the game has to offer, however I felt the need to spill out my heart before I finish vivid/stasis fully. This is another example of Steam not having a "neutral opinion" button, but I'm leaning towards a negative stance on this game. I'll talk about the positives first. The story is nice. Sure, it gets a tad confusing the further you go, and sometimes the dialogue is... questionably written to say the least, but it is never confusing to the point you never know what you're reading, just that it's more complicated. Another positive of this game is the UI, I never felt confused (maybe at the start, because I wasn't checking the Node Flowchart, so I just kept playing cool songs), but that's mostly my own ♥♥♥♥ up. What's neutral about this game are bumpers. Sometimes, on some occassions, they seem like a nice gimmick to have, while in others, it is an absolutely horrible chore. I have not much else to say about them... Now, let's move onto the negative stuff. First thing that comes to mind is that vivid/stasis is trying to be too much at once. It's a rhythm game following a story, which is a nice change of pace of the usual rhythm games where a story is generally not the main area of focus, but Betweenspace felt extremely unfinished (not to mention all the walking), and Tamasatchi I don't yet fully understand the purpose of. Some of the charts unlocked in Betweenspace are abhorrent (a personal opinion of mine, that's what a review is) due to the constantly changing scroll speeds and effects (e.g. LeaF - Aleph-0). I understand that some charts are made that way for dramatic effect (namely the "boss" charts at the end of each chapter), and that's completely fine, but for the love of god, I don't think I've ever had a worse few minutes of my life in a rhythm game getting gems from the later bits of Betweenspace. Next negative are probably the puzzles. I figured it out on my own so far, it clicks (eventually), but for the average fellow? They're just going to turn to a guide about how to finish them immediately when encountering them, because there's no preface or explanation or a "tutorial" of sorts on how a certain puzzle works, and let's face it, a lot of them are extremely vague. Perhaps an introductory one would be nice. I don't know how to feel about bumpers. In some charts, they are nicely utilized, they feel natural to play, and they go with the chart nicely. In others, it is an absolute nightmare, and it seems they were only added because "player needs to hit moar notes." And unfortunately, the latter is the more common; in most charts, bumpers felt forced, like they were only added after the actual chart was finished, and the chart would be much better without their inclusion. Also hearing about the fact that the community or the lead developer is a hit-or-miss regarding certain things, as seen from other reviews... Ultimately, as much as I would love to recommend this game, it is lacking in some areas and overflowing in others. It's going to have to be a 'No' from me. When I finish the game fully, I am going to come back to edit my review and see if anything changed, but from the way things are looking so far, I doubt it.

例如游戏默认是sdjk(不知道为什么不是dfjk),然后你按下去,他是只判定一个。

I'm not very good at writing reviews, so I'll keep things simple. This game is absolutely worth playing! I found the story quite good, with interesting complexity, and gorgeous art. You can experience the story even if you dislike rhythm games, or struggle with them. By default you need to alternate rather frequently between playing songs and viewing the story, but you can reduce the "grind" by a ton in the settings menu. Mandatory song levels can be lowered to a really accessible difficulty called Prelude. Prelude difficulty also lets you ignore certain requirements for those mandatory songs. Basically, sometimes you're asked things like "Maintain a combo of 300+ notes on at least 3 songs of " in order to unlock mandatory songs, and Prelude bypasses that. The story episodes are a bit clunky as they're missing classic visual novel options (a history tab with previous textboxes...), but despite that, the game gives a high-quality impression. It's free, so I really recommend you stop reading reviews, add it to your library, experience it one day and see if you enjoy it.

Definitely one of the games of all time. Story is really good (and by extension the yuri (seriously, some yuri in media feels a bit forced but i love how it was implemented in this game)). Puzzles were definitely something I didn't expect in a game like this. The rhythm gameplay is really fun, though the bumpers do take a while to get used to (because i'm a larper and have only played 4K with no bumpers in my life). The only gripe I really have with this game is that it doesn't seem rewarding enough for how hard some of the puzzles are. I really do love to go in blind to games but at points I feel dumb as ♥♥♥♥ for having to look at a guide after hours of being stuck on a puzzle. Near the endgame and post-story content is where things kind of fall apart progress wise too. It's basically mandatory for you to have a guide on-hand because there is no way you'd figure it out blind, not even if you were given a week to solve it. That does make me think that some parts of the game were meant to be solved on a community-level and not an individual-level which I suppose does induce some sort of FOMO that I wasn't there either. That, and the interesting optimisation this game has. I have what some might say a "Pretty" "Ass" "Computer," but for a pixel game like this it should be more than enough. Though I cannot stress how many times I have crashed on the progress bar at 50-80% and had to troubleshoot it. I have to close everything on my computer and leave this game as a standalone running program simply because it takes eight whole gigabytes of memory. Granted, apparently there is a mod which cuts down memory usage by like 10x (or so i heard), but I feel like optimisation is a really important part especially for a low-demand looking game like this. There's some other nitpicks too like the UI being confusing at first glance and taking a few minutes to figure out where the story content is (still have no idea why that's halfway down the menu), and the dialogue being a bit "buzzwordy" at times. But I can shrug that off. All that is not to undermine the really really good parts about this game, though. The story is peak. The songs are peak. The yuri is peak. The art is gorgeous. The characters are, too. The rare times this game uses voice acting really is cathartic as well. I don't think I've ever felt as much adrenaline course through my body than when Dawn faced off against Tsuki at the end of Chapter 4 and said "CAUSE I SURE AS HELL AM NOT!!". Seriously, that scene was my favourite in the entire game. I loved seeing it being reused in Chapter Alpha's Deep Dive, but then again the execution was kinda cheesy. For how good this game is, it also doesn't have enough fanart to justify that. I implore y'all make more. Please. Overall, I highly recommend it (if you have a good enough computer)! There are a lot of people I know that would love this game but because of the lack of advertising it isn't really as popular as it deserves to be. Hell, I discovered this game from someones profile picture on Discord and checked out the game cause the art looked cute. Oh yeah, did I mention this game has no price tag? It's literally free. When I saw it, I thought it had to be like a demo or a work in progress but it really was a full thing. Definitely worth the experience edit: okay so the specs shown on the review is completely wrong. i dont use ubuntu i use FEDORA smh. also i do have an intel gpu but i have an NVIDIA gtx 1650

This has to be the single best mix of rhythm game, visual novel, puzzle game/arg, top down 2d exploration, and turn based rpg. I really could not give this game higher praise for what it is. Also there’s yuri

Please. I beg of you. Go into this blind. As blind as you can. Please. Vivid/Stasis is a masterpiece that made me cry multiple times, and that's a difficult thing to do, since before then, I had never cried from a video game before. Please. If you have the time, play this game. Take your time. Enjoy it. 9/10 10/10 10/10 10/10 100000000/10 10/10 /endreview

I was always fascinated by rhythm games, but I often found them to be too inaccessible when they tried to ramp up the difficulty and skills required (skill issue I know), or I didn't feel much drive to continue after a while bcause sometimes the only thing they offered was the challenge in itself. vivid/stasis is the first rhythm game in a while in which I felt actually encouraged to push through and improve as a player: not only for the puzzle/ARG components (which I personally like); not only for the AMAZING story and characters (which could be seen as pretentious and overly cheesy by some, but the care and heartfelt message put behind them justify every over-the-top line of dialogue). The learning curve is amazingly constructed and the mechanics are easy to understand, challenging to master. Overall, I'm having fun :) I can't wait to keep playing and find out what I missed. acta est fabula, plaudite.
