I wish I could find the enjoyment other players are finding. In the end I think this game is just not for me. I got some enjoyment out of solving some puzzles and I got to experience some story telling and fun surprises, but in the end, doing the same puzzles over and over to be drip fed lore isnt as thrilling to me as it might be for others. I am leaving this game with alot of questions left unanswered. Maybe I'll give it another go in a year or two, maybe I wont. I can tell there is something special to be experienced here, but sadly I will not be one to see it anytime soon.

On the absolute surface level, Void Stranger is a 2D sokoban puzzle game where you remove floor tiles and place them in other empty spaces to reach the staircase at the end of the floor. There are hundreds of puzzles to solve and new mechanics are introduced every couple dozen floors to keep the player engaged. These range from enemies with rigid movement patterns to tiles that react when stepped on. The mechanics aren’t pushed as far as other sokobans like Baba Is You, but that isn’t necessarily a negative if there are complementing elements. Indeed, System Erasure wasn’t content with making just a puzzle game. With a deep well of lore and secrets that only inquisitive players will uncover, Void Stranger also highly rewards exploration. For the first 20 hours, I loved solving each puzzle while listening to the amazing music. Given the puzzle gameplay, I was expecting something sparse and unmemorable, but the composer went above and beyond to deliver melodies perfectly encompassing your current progress. Void Symphony, Affection Air, Greedy Groove, and Rage Rave are oxymorons of epic and unsettling, the likes of which I’ve rarely heard in recent memory. There’s even a song with lyrics that rivals Weight of the World from Nier: Automata in its emotional impact. If nothing else, I will not forget this music anytime soon. As much as I initially loved this game though, I could not bring myself to care anymore when I approached the 30-hour mark. Part of that is the story. The initial mysteries surrounding the motivations of protagonist Gray and other characters gradually evaporate into an incoherent vapor of anime clichés less inspired than the monochrome style they are presented in. Because the story became less of a hook the more I played, I had no desire to pursue the true ending, Why should I care about the conclusion to a plot with characters that aren’t exactly memorable to begin with? I took plenty of notes. Figuring out what most of the tile murals referred to was intuitive enough that their puzzles were enjoyable to solve, but aside from that, I prefered the single-screen puzzles presented to me more than I did trying to decipher the larger Void. Doing that requires a far different mindset, one that I have trouble clicking with. To be clear, I like pursuing knowledge. However, the thing I liked the most about Void Stranger and other knowledge-based games like Rain World were noticing alternate uses of the tools I was given. In the latter, I noticed spears are not just weapons, but climbing poles. In the former, I noticed that a line of 3 blocks can be used to safely traverse a single row or column. These were organic discoveries I made using what was available to me. I didn’t have to read in-game text or look up a guide to figure these things out. If I wanted to learn about the logic of a fictional universe through text or dialogue, I will read a book or watch a movie/show. Now that I think about it, mystery games provide tons of convenient breadcrumbs for players to follow. This isn’t an accurate simulation of most actual detective work given the near-infinite amount of questions humanity still has, most of which will not be answered in our lifetime.

I don't think I can accurately convey how much I love this game without spoiling things massively. If you're willing to believe there's something worth finding in this game, you won't be disappointed.

I can't recommend this highly enough. The trappings of a sokoban flash game, but from its first steps, you're warned something doesn't feel right. Beautiful pixel art, tough as nails puzzles, and a ton of replay value. For fans of sokoban, the feeling of discovery you find in The Outer Wilds, and the meta-game elements of Inscryption and Nier: Automata

This is a very good game, with incredible "aha!" moments and incredible depth hidden just beneath the surface. So many secrets to uncover, so many mechanics to figure out and so many ways to outsmart the original level design. However, i have a hard time recommending it. Because it will not hold your hand, it will let you get lost and make terrible mistakes, and you will get frustrated trying to figure out how to reach the end. If you like sokoban games and are willing to spend time on it, even when it gets boring... the journey is absolutely worth it,

After my 55 hours with this game and not even every ending seen, I can with certainty say that I have become addicted. It has destroyed me. I cannot hear the main theme without crying. It's a very emotional experience if you look past the puzzle difficulty. I love this game and I wish my friends had the same levels of ADHD to experience it the same way I did.

maybe the most "not for everyone" game of all time. incredibly abrasive, annoying and at times genuinely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. but if you have the patience and employment status to break through that first wall things start going by a bit quicker and you get to experience one of the best games ever made.
