Warhounds

This game could be good. BUT, it has many issues that the programmers have to resolve. Opponents ramp up very quickly, and have access to armor and weapons you can't get. 100% hits are not 100%. Enemies see your whole team even if only one of them is spotted. Enemies immediately engage without hesitation as if they were waiting all day for you. Your team often shoots at its own waist high cover instead of the enemy.Enemies seem to be able too shoot through walls while your team cant. Opponents often hide behind invisible cover. Factories and mines that you capture and should be giving you income, do not. I wanted to love this game, but in its current format it is not loveable. I would wait until the programmers patch many of the issues listed above. Having now played over 50 missions. I can say the balance is way off. Did an "easy" mission today, I was outnumbered 2-1, with opponents who had superior firepower, vastly superior armor, better to hit chance, better range and mini tanks! I was shot through a wall that supposedly gave me full protection, my return fire hit the same wall and did nothing. I know the developers are working on this but they have along way to go before this game becomes even remotely playable. I would encourage them to hire or get a volunteer who has real combat experience to help them with the glaring errors that are in this game. Too bad I really wanted to love it, but until its fixed stay away.

Overall an ok game. If you haven't played XCOM, play that instead. There's also Jagged Alliance 3. Tomorrow, the Star Wars XCOM is also coming out and that looks good. This game has pretty dated graphics, definitely what seems like AI-generated photos leftover from the demo (which were 100% AI "placeholders"). This is all on top of the controversy behind it being literally the same game of Sparta 2035, which is sold in Russia only, according to some articles online. As for what it does right, I do highly appreciate the differentiation between ability and movement points. And the fact that you can shoot twice in one turn if you didn't move. Your troops reloading after killing all in-sight enemies is a nice QoL as well. Class variety is fairly standard, but I enjoyed machine gunners way more than I expected since they actually have good accuracy and fantastic overwatch. Grenadiers were pretty good as well, though not nearly enough cover is destructible considering how many heavy grenades I'm tossing. Maps often have high points so your snipers' squadsight is incredibly useful. Assault troopers' melee seems good, but honestly most of the time they just would shoot my guy, which stopped the melee from killing (you do some basic damage, and "win" the melee next turn, though it's only a % chance victory. The enemy may turn it around on you and kill you, not just down. Kill). What I didn't enjoy were bugs/skill interactions not happening half the time. For example, my sniper should get AP back from a kill, but seemed like she didn't, even when it was her only move that turn. Medics' keystone skill is "Overwatch costs no AP and can be used with 0 AP." This is nice, HOWEVER, if you use him last and have no other units with AP, the turn automatically ends, and I saw no setting to disable "automatically end turn on 0 AP." Sometimes the grenades wouldn't hit, despite the enemy glowing (which is to indicate they should hit, as my understanding). Voice acting is okayish, but Julia, the spokesperson of the outfit somehow sounds like the most naive schoolgirl, despite having been with this merc outfit for quite some time. The black market guy sounds like a white suburban college student selling weed for the first time for some reason. Also, you have "veterans" which are pre-made soldiers that you can occasionally hire. They all have one personal skill which may or may not be useful, as opposed to your generic hires that get none. This made me not care about those hires, despite them being my first rookies. Hires also had variable skills at hiring, which coooould be an interesting concept a la XCOM, but honestly some of them were just so trash, I don't get the point (3 base hp and 6 movement is just useless). Basebuilding amounts to just paying the 10k or so to build a thing, and you collect contracts to be able to buy gear. That was ok, though it's just a waiting game really for that. My least favorite part of the strategic layer is how often your squads seemed to fail the recon missions to unlock more missions. They'd consistently say ~5 - 10% chance of failing and it's not confirmation bias to say I just had to do "save my troops" missions 5 times in a row. They're not fun, just tedious. Let me choose to not save them, and just have the troops be severely injured rather than dead. Saving them nets about 20 xp (which is essentially nothing), and is just boring at that frequency. There are 3 factions you meet. It was fairly easy to get them to 100 each via the missions, though they often would fluctuate. It's important to get them to 100 to get the contracts to buy the best gear. However, you cannot buy the gear if the rep goes below the level again. So, I didn't buy enough sniper rifles from the Chinese faction (need 100), and now I am just sitting on the map layer waiting for a faction mission to pop so I can buy the sniper rifle (even though I already have the contract!). I understand the idea, but why bother making it a contract if I can lose the ability to buy the gear? Note, I haven't finished the game, though I am forcing myself to slog through it at this point. I just had another failed recon mission and took a break to write this review. Again, overall, okay. If I never played XCOM, Xenonauts, Phoenix Point, Jagged Alliance 3, etc. I'd probably rate it higher. In a vacuum, it's good.

The technical state is probably the biggest problem. For a 1.0 release, crashes shouldn't be happening. Simple as that. But after the initial frustration, I found myself enjoying the actual game. here should be “yellow finger” :-)

I very rarely leave reviews but Warhounds was such a huge disappointment, so many mechanics and beats are completely lifted from a variety of XCOM titles, the dialogue is cringey and makes you hate the characters, technically the game is a mess and visually the art style really doesn't do it for me. I'm a huge fan of turn based tactics games but this was a huge miss for me, I encountered lots of weird bugs where I would spend money on operators but wouldn't get them. Game felt very half baked and cheap.

Alright. Warhounds is done and dusted. This is very much a modern world tactical turn-based strategy game ala XCOM2 (and Jagged Alliance 3), which the developers proudly list as their main influences. I've played XCOM2 extensively, and I'd say it definitely has a lot in common with that game, without an alien invasion of course. Instead, this game focuses on a civil war getting out of control in Africa. A (mostly) benevolent warlord is usurped by a group of fanatics with mysterious backers and your PMC is hired to both end the insurrection and also investigate who the mysterious backers are. With that in mind, there is a decent selection of maps and variations of those maps to keep the main missions from getting boring. Side missions on the other hand do repeat their basic formats pretty strictly, and map variation is far less... varied. Each map makes great use of terrain and verticality to create fun playscapes within which to conduct operations and engage in (mostly) urban warfare. Cover and destructible environments are also key design additions within the maps, and obviously this is hugely impactful during combat. Within your PMC, you have a small selection of classes: grenadier, specialist, assault, machine gunner, and sniper. I've seen a lot of talk of this or that class being useless. I didn't find that to be the case at all. Actually, I thought all classes had a well-defined role in your PMC. You get to bring four soldiers into each full mission, and at no point did I feel like any class was weak. Snipers are obviously going to have an advantage in games like this, but really, I enjoyed what each class brought to the table, and I used them all throughout the campaign. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3797669309 In addition to main and side missions, you also have passive missions, where you send one to four soldiers (typically two) to resolve missions automatically. At a certain point, you also will unlock missile launchers and drones, adding another layer to these passive missions. Regardless of the type of mission, your soldier will become fatigued and need to rest. Additionally, if they are wounded, they will have significant downtime. Now, on the flipside of this, there aren't timers on any of your main missions until you reach a certain threshold, and side/passive missions will be generated consistently, so I found there to be no harm in skipping days so my troops could rest and heal properly. The one caveat being that your have to pay your troops and maintain your base (a ship) every month, so you will need to earn enough cash via missions to at least do that. There are limited skill trees for each class, and gear will be regularly upgraded via special gear contracts and loot found during missions. You can also buy stuff via the black market; and also purchase any unlocked items via a merchant option in your ship's hold. It's pretty important, especially mid to late game, to properly equip your soldiers with the best gear. There are also three factions you can ally with, each of whom have their own gear that will unlock if you befriend them. That inarguably the best gear in the game, so definitely strive to befriend all of them. Balancing faction relationships can be tricky since a lot of your missions pit one faction's objectives against another, lol. But eventually, the common enemy will unify these groups to some extent, at least through your PMC and its activities and diplomacy. I personally thought the bulk of the game on default settings was pretty easy, and I only lost three soldiers throughout my playthrough outside of a party wipe I'll talk about a bit below. None of the three soldiers were Veterans. Veterans being the top tier mercenaries with special abilities beyond their class abilities. They're the same characters in each playthrough. You'll want to prioritize recruiting and leveling up all of them. Anyway, once the game introduces the shadow faction, a lot of these battles get more difficult, and the first time you have to fight them, you may end up having to replay the mission(s) at least once due to the potential necessity of drastically altering your tactics and potentially having a party wipe until you figure it out, lol. A party wipe during main story missions requires loading a previous save rather than just permanently losing your soldiers. Other than party wipes during main story missions, permadeath is a thing. So, in a weird way, a party wipe can be better than simply having one or two soldiers die. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3795273778 The story is very socially conscious but also doesn't shy away from having you make difficult decisions. The devs did include some fun and often humorous dialogue and news stories though to break up the seriousness here and there. I enjoyed all that. Additionally, the quips and banter was also fun overall. The graphics weren't amazing, but they were very appropriate to the setting. Voice acting was pretty decent overall, with some actors definitely leaning into being intentionally a bit over the top. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3799323664 So, NPC AI was generally decent and at times really effective. However, there were also times where they'd get into these weird movement loops or would make odd decisions outside the purview of their class tendencies. I would also say that there is in fact wonky RNG at times. When you miss three shots in a row with 80% success odds or make three in a row with 20% odds, you know that probably should be dialed in a bit better. I think the problem percentages were mostly in the 55-70% range where the failure rate was greater than that 55-70% would suggest. Overall, it wasn't a significant issue IMO, but it's worth noting. Yeah, I had a fun time with this game. The gritty, (mostly) urban warfare was compelling, the setting was cool, the story was pretty decent, and I found it to be a pretty addictive gameplay loop. The price seems pretty competitive for the game you're getting, and I think it's worth a look. The developers reached out via email to see if I'd be interested in reviewing this, which I was, and provided a key for the game. If you found this review helpful and would be interested in supporting my Curator group, Robilar's Reviews, it would be appreciated. Cheers. Also follow IndieGems for more reviews like this one.

Just finished Warhounds on Normal play level. I've been playing tactical turn based games since I got my shareware copy of the original X-com in my PCGamer magazine. I found it to be an enjoyable game that definitely scratched that X-Com itch. Of course, it's no X-Com2: War of the Chosen, but then again, what is? I thought it was a little short, though. The story played through pretty well and it was an interesting take on modern day factions. The price was right as I purchased it right after release. While I was reading existing reviews I was a little baffled regarding some of the negative comments. It does seem to be a re-release of an earlier game (that I looked up after learning of it). I don't speak Russian, so I could really not care less about that. The re-release is polished and it's a great looking game. Some of the voice acting was a little jank... Let's just say that they don't match the chararcter drawings sometimes. ;) There were no hair-pulling RNG silliness moments. Good tactics and unit placement worked as expected on the lethality of the outcomes. Also there were mentions regarding AI? Ok... So what? It's a game that has many forms of artificial intelligence coded into it. I don't get it. it was FUN and the obvious AI bits were appropriately placed and helped to expand the story. :) I did experience a rather infuriating bug during the final battle. My unit was behind cover on a stairway and could not be moved on the next turn. I looked it up and found it identified as "Geometry Tile lockup". It only happened once and a re-load of the area entry auto save game got me past it. Anyway, if you're not a gaming snob and enjoy the tactical turn-based game style for what it is, I highly recommend it for a short distraction.

Do Not Buy This Game You deserve better. if you take a quick look through my game reviews, I usually put a bit of time and effort into them, but ive decided im not going to do that for companies that dont do the same for their games. Companies that use embarrassingly cheap looking and sounding generative ai textures and voice over and developers so creatively bankrupt that they would copy a popular established game in the genre and still somehow make it worse in every possible way. so to put it simply; Do Not Buy This Game The price is x10 higher than the game it copied. The quality is x10 lower. The company doesn't deserve a penny. And You deserve better. Play Jagged Alliance 3, MENACE, Wartales, Star Wars Zero Company, Xenonaughts 2, Gears Tactics or more XCOM 2. Played them all? Then go play anything else until another good one comes out. Anything but this. Customer Response: Rikimaru Posted: 4 Oct @ 10:25am That's not the clap back you think it is, chief! You not long ago removed the AI Generated Content Disclosure from your Steam page where admit to using AI-generated content. Perhaps you thought we'd forget about that just because it's not on the store page now? I would petition you to find out exactly how your artists came up with the images for the banner in the intro, the paintings in the first mission and the billboards you see across the town missions. Thank you for not acknowledging my points about the the lack of creativity, the lack of quality nor the bad pricing during your little online spat. It helped cement my argument and made you look a bit unprofessional. Have a wonderful day. Yours faithfully - someone who's glad they used G2A lol

I really want to like this game and feel like it has a lot of potential. Its just hard to overlook the glaring AI issues. Examples- A shot gunner in the street should not be able to shoot up through a 4 story building and hit my guy on the roof. AI snipers shooting through walls with no LOS from insane distances and take out your men with one shot gets old. I spend more time just trying to revive my team then actually shooting enemies. Its basically medic simulator 2026.
